2013 APPIC Internship Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Sorry to hear that. It's still early, and at least now you don't have to wind up in Oklahoma (I kid, I kid). 🙂

I'm surprised sites are sending out notifications on a Sunday. I heard it happened, but I was kinda just assuming it only happened the weekend before December 15th, when they were scrambling to send out all of their notifications by the notification date. 🙂.

Thank you Letsgonyr! Tomorrow is another day. Trying to stay positive.

11/18/12 - personalized email invitation to interview at Children's Hospital of Michigan

Rejection from Oklahoma Health Sciences Center 11/18 personalized email. They stated all interview invites for the child program have already been extended. First notification, hopefully not a trend 🙁
That sucks. I applied to the neuropsych track and haven't heard anything. Maybe a rejection is coming, but I'm trying to stay positive!

9:30 PM on a Sunday and I got a personalized invite from Children's Hospital of Michigan. The one time I wasn't thinking to obsessively check my email.

I was about to submit my application to a site and, after doing one last review of the requirements, I can see some discrepancies. The APPIC listing does not mention supplemental materials, but the handbook from their website (which is apparently outdated) asks for an assessment report and a case summary. However, the website itself says they want only an assessment report. This statement isn't even in the application part of the website, but in an introductory letter from the director. Is it bad if I just play it safe and submit both, which is what I originally thought I needed to do? It's really irritating to me that sites can be so disorganized in the information they provide considering how much pressure we are under.

To make matters worse, I was unable to get a clear answer from them as to whether or not they will accept applicants who have not yet proposed their dissertation. I'd appreciate any advice from you all on either of these issues.

I found a few in some of mine too, so freaking annoying.
Yes, I experienced that too! Went through everything over and over, then as soon as I viewed PDF after submitting - spotted one right away. Oh, well at least it seems like we're not the only ones!

Anyone else find that the waiting is already starting to provoke anxiety? I'm checking my email and this forum already... at least its only 4 weeks to go...

The appic listing should say if you need to have proposed or not, but as per the supplementals, i suggest submitting both. my 2cents!

I would submit both supplemental documents, just to be on the safe side. You might also add a statement to your cover letter, such as "I have included an assessment report and case summary, as requested in your internship handbook." This would clarify exactly why you included both documents, and might also point out to them the discrepancies in the info they've provided through APPIC, their website, and their brochure.

As for the dissertation proposal issue, I'd probably take the chance and apply, especially if you've already prepared all of your materials. If they don't accept your application, the only thing you've really lost is the application fee.

Just finished all my letters last night and first thing this morning also received a rejection:

Henry Ford HSC, generic email, health psychology 🙁

Bummed because I'm from Detroit. However, there are a whole lot of places that haven't rejected me yet that I'm super excited about, too! Probably didn't help that my letter talked a lot about the Consultation Liaison rotation that they dropped after I sent my materials in. I did contact them, and they said "we'll figure it out," but well, I mentioned it several times.

I was just going to e-mail Henry Ford because their website still has the C-L Track listed and I was confused about whether that was the updated information or not (the APPIC announcement had said the updated website would be available by 11/15, with the deadline extended to 11/30). Good to know that the information still hasn't been updated, though I am sorry that you did not get an interview.

Recieved an interview this morning at UAB via general email... options are 12/7 or 1/4! Very excited!

Just got a phone call inviting me to interview in person at Columbia! This is for the Adult track. 😀

Rejection- Tennessee Internship Consortium (Knoxville) 11/19 - email, personalized

I'm starting to feel like the only person applying who still hasn't heard anything. :scared:
I applied to 17 places, but haven't heard a peep out of anyone either way! And because of that (well the stress of this whole process really), I'm definitely NOT looking forward to being around family for the holidays. If another Aunt asks me if I've "picked where I'm going for internship" (because that's how they think this works -lol), I'm going to start launching sweet potatoes across the room.

Step away from the sweet potatoes!!

I hear you. I applied to 12 places and have yet to hear anything either. That being said, no one else from the places I have applied has posted on studentdoctor any information either way yet. So, we could be waiting for months, or who knows, maybe the next email that comes in will be "news." It is out of our hands, so I am going to try to think of all the fun things I could do in the year off if I don't happen to match this time around!

You are not the only one at all! most folks haven't heard anything. a review of last year's thread shows that (unfortunately!) tons of invites get send out on 12/15! so this is gonna be marathon...hang in there!

I think that a suit should be non-negotiable for several reasons.

What about sites that encourage applicants to dress casually, or sites that explicitly state that a suit is unnecessary? I appreciate the sentiment, but it does add another layer of decision-making.

Hi All,

Got an invite for interview at the Bay Pines VA - email, personalized.

It sounds like you contacted the site and it gave you an ambiguous response regarding dissertation proposal; would you mind sharing what they said?

I would be a little more cautious about going ahead and submitting because most sites don't consider applicants that have not proposed. If you have a proposal date set, make sure you mention that in your cover letter.

Nope, not the only one at all. I'm sure there's a whole slew of us that haven't heard a word. I can also relate to the fact that everyone assumes you just choose which internship to go to... Oh well!

Invitation to interview at UC San Francisco pm Dec. 7- personal email- received Nov. 17

Well, I hadn't heard from any sites yet....

My first response is a personalized rejection e-mail from Spring Grove Hospital due to my number of assessment hours registered on the APPI. Maybe the cover letter didn't help the way I thought it would for that site.

Darn. I had hoped I wouldn't start with a rejection.

Thanks for the advice everyone. Basically I asked if it's an absolute requirement or if applicants who have not yet proposed will still be considered. They replied back to say that the director's response was no to my question. Didn't specify which question and did not respond when I tried to clarify. So awkward. I did end up uploading both documents and applying anyway because I felt I didn't have much to lose. Considering the discrepancies and that most people probably went by their brochure, I am probably one of many applicants who submitted both reports. I also mentioned in the cover letter the month I plan to propose the dissertation so we'll see I guess.

Some good news: received a phone call today from Columbia University Medical Center (Adult Track) for an interview!

Congrats that's a great site!👍

Does anyone know where I can find the survey data used to support APPIC's recommendation to apply to no more than 15 sites? I'm almost certain I've seen it before on the APPIC website, but I cannot seem to find it now.

Lmao! Isn't it precious the way family and friends think this is a normal internship process? I just tell them it's similar to the Hunger Games!

I received an invite from MCG today via phone call -- I applied to the Psych of Women and Health Psych tracks.

Personalized rejection from UC Irvine Counseling Center...not a great start to the notifications, but hopefully good news is on the way.

Another REJECTION....Northeast Florida State Hospital

Personalized letter in the mail....how polite!

Congrats! I applied there for the child rotation, but did not get a call today 🙁 maybe there is still hope.

I made this mistake last year, told all my family and close friends about where I was applying and all about the internship process. Made it so much more difficult when I didn't match and had to try and explain that! Made the decision this year not to tell anyone anything really, except of course my fiance because of our financial/living arrangements. If you don't want to talk about it, just say you haven't heard anything yet. In all reality, you probably won't by then either, since sites tend to send out more invites/rejects after the holidays!

Your list has UC Irvine as an invite...is it possible that is a mistake? I only saw a post for a rejection (sorry to the OP).
