2013 APPIC Internship Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Lmao! Isn't it precious the way family and friends think this is a normal internship process? I just tell them it's similar to the Hunger Games!
Lmao @ hunger games! Yes, indeed! It's tough out here! I feel like this is similar to a gang initiation or something. We don't really want to do it, but have no choice in the matter if we want to survive in the field! APPIC=Psychology gang initiation.

Glad to hear many sympathize with family ignorance, and relieved that some folks out there still haven't heard anything. I know they can, but I hope these sites don't wait until Dec 15th to notify. I want to hear...but I don't...such is life.

This is still pretty early. I applied to 22 sites and only 2 have sent out invites, one has sent out rejections. I am concerned that invites may go out even later than last year, due to sites extending their deadlines for Sandy.

Your list has UC Irvine as an invite...is it possible that is a mistake? I only saw a post for a rejection (sorry to the OP).

People can post or send a direct message to the OP

I know...that's what I figured when I saw it, but then I saw UC Irvine was only listed under invites, so I thought perhaps it might be a mistake.

Mass email interview invitation 11/20! (they're interviewing like 5 of my classmates...)

....yay! I got one!!!

Personalized e-mail invitation for an interview. Received it last night. 🙂 Very excited

Second notification, first rejection this morning. Staying positive!

Personalized email rejection for Texas Woman's University.

Does anyone know where I can find the survey data used to support APPIC's recommendation to apply to no more than 15 sites? I'm almost certain I've seen it before on the APPIC website, but I cannot seem to find it now.

I believe that recommendation comes from these data:
http://www.appic.org/Match/MatchStatistics/ApplicantSurvey2011Part2.aspx

12. Number of applications submitted:

1 to 5 applications Match rate = 62% n = 143
6 to 10 applications Match rate = 72% n = 258
11 to 15 applications Match rate = 83% n = 946
16 to 20 applications Match rate = 81% n = 912
21 to 25 applications Match rate = 84% n = 321
26 or more applications Match rate = 74% n = 132

However, this is what was send out on the listserv on 9/20/2012:

APPIC MATCH NEWS
---

Many applicants struggle with the question of how many internship applications to submit in order to maximize their chances of being matched. Due to concerns about "Supply and Demand" issues, some applicants might assume that sending out a greater number of applications means a greater likelihood of being matched.

But does a "more is better" approach really work? Recent APPIC surveys of internship applicants have examined the relationship between the number of applications submitted and the chances of being successfully matched. Below are the results from the last four APPIC Matches (2011 and 2012 exclude Phase II placement activity):

Number of
Applications 2012 2011 2010 2009
Submitted Match Rate Match Rate Match Rate Match Rate

1 - 5 54% 62% 59% 68%
6 - 10 69% 72% 75% 75%
11 - 15 81% 83% 84% 81%
16 - 20 81% 81% 81% 81%
21 or more 77% 81% 84% 81%

To interpret the above table: 54% of applicants who submitted between one and five applications were matched in 2012, 69% of applicants who submitted between six and ten applications were matched in 2012, and so on. These data should be interpreted cautiously, as other variables such as the number of interviews received and the number of rankings submitted may account for these differences.

As can be seen above, applying to more than 15 internship sites does not appear to increase the chances of being matched, and thus the "more is better" philosophy may have its limitations. APPIC's data has been consistent in this regard for many years. In addition, applying to five sites or less may considerably reduce the chances that one will be successfully matched.

APPIC recommends that applicants apply to between 11 and 15 sites. In fact, the pricing structure of the AAPI Online was developed specifically to keep applicants' costs low if they submit 15 or fewer applications. Applicants who submit more than 15 applications via the AAPI Online service will incur a higher per-application cost beginning with the 16th application. For more information on the fees for the AAPI Online, please see www.appic.org, click on "AAPI Online," then see the "Applicant Fees" section on that page.

Other points to consider:

1. Applying exclusively to highly-competitive sites can reduce the likelihood of being matched, regardless of the number of sites to which you apply. Information about the number of applications received in previous years by APPIC-member programs appears in the APPIC Directory Online.

2. Applicants who have significant geographic limitations on their internship search often have more difficulty getting matched, since this limitation can reduce the number of sites available to them and/or means that applicants are less likely to be a good "fit" at some of the sites to which they apply.

More results from these applicant surveys may be found at www.appic.org (click on "Match," then "Match Statistics").

I've always wondered what these #'s would look like if the reason why applicants applied to X number of sites was taken into acct. l imagine there wold be a difference between "more is better" folks, those who apply to most sites in their area because of geographic limitations, and those that are maybe looking for a specific kind of internship, like a gero, pediatric, neuro, etc, and so apply to a large # of sites since those specific tracks usually only have 1-2 positions. And I wonder what it is about the large # that reduces match--is it that the cover letters or appi materials aren't as good, an increased likelihood of poor fit ( in the "more is better" and geographic limitation cases, for instance) or that they get many interviews and struggle to perform well throughout?

I received an interview offer from University at Albany Counseling Center by personalized email. They said their review is done on a rolling basis.

Thanks, becomethelight!

I've wondered the same thing, kyril. Given all of the other factors you mentioned, it seems misleading to assert that more applications (in and of themselves) = reduced chance of matching. Although I'm not sure APPIC has ever explicitly stated this, it seems to be a conclusion that is reached by many, at least, in my experience and discussions with others.

I'm starting to feel like the only person applying who still hasn't heard anything. :scared:
I applied to 17 places, but haven't heard a peep out of anyone either way! And because of that (well the stress of this whole process really), I'm definitely NOT looking forward to being around family for the holidays. If another Aunt asks me if I've "picked where I'm going for internship" (because that's how they think this works -lol), I'm going to start launching sweet potatoes across the room.

I wouldn't fret just yet. The one person I'm keeping up with in my dept has yet to hear anything either way.

*sending happy thoughts & optimism your way*

Yeah, my partner & his family still don't understand the internship thing after repeated explanations. He just told me last night that he's applying for a position in Alaska. I asked him what I'm supposed to do when I apply for internship next year. Response: "Well, you'll just go to Alaska. You said there was a site there, so this works perfectly."

 I'm going to remember that one.

Non personalized rejection from Holcomb Behavioral Health Systems. 🙁

That's both funny and sad at the same time.

Today is supposedly the last day for notifying applicants. I see that some received invites last week, but has anyone heard from them this week (either an interview or rejection)?

Also a non personalized rejection email from Holcomb Behavioral Health

Email invitation to interview at University of Arkansas Medical Sciences, child track. Interviews are 12/7, 12/14, 1/4, 1/14.
Has anyone heard anything/received an interview for the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences' Adult Track? I saw that rejections were sent out but that was last week. Any invitations?

Received personalized email invitation to interview at University of Florida's Department of Clinical and Health Psychology for the clinical child/ pediatric psychology track.

I received an invite from MCG today via phone call -- I applied to the Psych of Women and Health Psych tracks.

I received an invite for Communtihy Psych and Health Psych-Trauma tracks today via phone call as well. Was offered interview dates of 1/11, 1/14, and 1/18. Sounds like they have different dates depending on tracks and do combined interviews. Will be an all day affair.

You're welcome! My personal take on these numbers is that applying to more sites is in the best interest of applicants. I believe the ideal number of applications is higher than what the APPIC folks recommend, with the 16 to 20 range being the sweet spot.

Lol. Yes! That works perfectly! What are you so concerned about?! He remembered what you said about there being a site up there, and incorporated that info when he decided to go for a position in the area. Geez...you're such a party pooper! Lol.

Thanks for the happy thoughts & optimism! Brought a big ol' smile to my face!

What are some thoughts about attending or not attending Open Houses at sites that note they consider applicants even if they do not attend? Is it worth it to save the $ and date for a site that requires in-person interviews?

mass email for VA Pittsburgh interview -- dates are 12/10, 1/4, 1/11, or 1/16

Good news - received interview invites for Oklahoma Health Sciences - Adult (11/16) and Utah State Hospital - Forensic (11/15) via email on those dates.
Bad news - my stupid gmail account did not forward those emails to me, so I just got them when I checked my university account. Ack! I have emailed the sites, so I hope it all works out.

Hi! These are already posted, but just to add tracks.

I got interview invites for:
Oklahoma Health Sciences Consortium, VA track (11/16)
Vanderbilt Consortium, VA General Track (11/17)
Pittsburgh VA, General Track (11/20)

No rejections yet, but I applied to San Antonio and Bay Pines, so I'm assuming those are out.

nyprincess, is there any way that you could make the newest additions to the list be a different color? if it is too much of a pain, no problem. thank you for volunteering to admin the list!!

That's a good idea, but at what point will the colors get to be too much? I was just thinking how the list is getting longer and it's only 11/20.

maybe just for each day have that days new add be red or whatever. the day after, the reds become black and that days new adds are red, etc...

University of Arkansas for medical sciences email invite on 11/16 for the adult track

Just received a (non-personalized) email invite to the Pitt VA (General track). First notification from any of my sites. 🙂

Well, the wait is finally over. I just received my first notification - a rejection from Cincinnati VAMC. 👎

It is a little disappointing but fingers crossed for the next 20 notifications!

Sorry to hear that.

I also heard from them today about an invite to interview. It looked like a mass email "Dear applicant..."

Rejected Cincinnati VAMC by mass email, though a nice one that cites record number of applications.

Interview invite to Brooke Army Medical Center, 12/10. There's also a 12/7 date.

I just got a rejection from the Cincinnati VA, general track.

But 10 minutes later, I got an invite for the Houston VA. Interview dates January 7, 11, 14, 18. Mass e-mail.

Personalized or mass email? Thanks for the response!
