2013 APPIC Internship Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Sorry to bother this forum with so many noob questions, but this waiting game is killing me. Has anyone experienced or known someone who has never heard from a site at all? so a site does not send them an invite or rejection? Or is it assumed that every site will contact you to let you know if you are in the running or not? Thanks!

It is rare that this happens...however IT DOES happen every year with some sites.

Hey-
Regarding not hearing either way-

That happened to me yesterday.. A site sent out rejections and invites on the 3rd but I heard nothing. I emailed the training director and she stated that if I did not receive an invite then I should consider myself out of the running.. The language APPIC uses regarding this matter states- "reasonable" efforts must be made to contact each applicant.

That seems to be rude on their part. How hard would it be to send out a polite rejection letter?

t....but a friend in my program said that since she hasn't heard anything and it's relatively late in the process now....

Late in the process? There are still sites out there who's application deadline isn't even here yet. I have a handful of sites who's deadline to notify for interviews isn't until the first or second week of January.

RELAX. :luck:

Interview offer from the University of Central Florida 🙂. I have recieved 5 interviews and 12 more to go. Great day!

The notfication deadline for all APPIC member (and APA accredited) sites is December 15th.

Yeah, I'd agree that it's pretty accurate to say "late in the process", given that the majority of sites had November 1st deadlines and it is now a week until the APPIC notification deadline......don't think I'm being crazy here.

The notfication deadline for all APPIC member (and APA accredited) sites is December 15th.

The recommended date is the 15th. But there are several sites (just on my list) that have either sent notifications of a later interview notification date, or have late dates posted (ex: Lenox Hill Hospital has a January 15th notification date listed).

Zoe-

haha yeah I hear you... You take the time to write a cover letter and pay the fee so you figure getting an answer either way would be a reasonable request! However, it has me sweating a few sites that I have to hear either way from (Interfaith, Hennepin and Jacobi)...

The notfication deadline for all APPIC member (and APA accredited) sites is December 15th.

I understand that December 15th is the suggested date, but that sites don't have to notify by that date. What they do have to do is adhere to whatever date they do post (although they don't have to post any date) and they have to notify at some point.

Has anyone heard from MercyFirst recently? I know they invited people over the phone a while ago, but nothing since. I havent seen an invite or rejection since 11/19. Please let me know!

Secondly, I saw that Watson Institute sent out both invites and rejections yesterday. I applied there and havent a word from them? Should I wait a bit longer or should I email them to get clarification? (I have checked my spam and junk email on both the emails listed on my appi).

Any help would be appreciated! thanks guys and gals!

Which track did you apply to at The Watson Institute? I applied for the autism track and heard back a couple of days ago. Maybe they're sending out notifications for different tracks on separate days? I hope you hear something soon!

Interview invite (personalized e-mail) received this afternoon from the Topeka, Kansas VA, so it seems that they are still reviewing applications. Interview dates are the same as previously listed.

Finally got my rejection (generic e-mail) from the Durham VA. I knew it was coming because they sent out invites weeks ago.

I agree with what many are saying--if you interview well, it only takes one interview to get matched succesfully! A lot of preparation and practice is in order. Keeping my fingers crossed for all of us.

Portland VA notified me I didn't make the final cut... 🙁 It was a nice, but generic email.

Really was hoping for a phoenix va invite. Was this from the TD or a specific faculty? Thanks and congrats!

Sent from my SGH-T999 using SDN Mobile

I haven't heard from Watson either way. Another person in my program is in the same boat too. I looked back at the thread from last year, and it looks like they only sent out notifications and rejections once. I'm not sure if we're on the waiting list or what. However, I wouldn't email yet if I were you, because the notification deadline hasn't passed yet.

Did you receive an invitation or rejection? I haven't heard either way from Watson, and I also applied for the autism track.

I'm fairly certain that APPIC requires all sites to send notification one way or the other. Depending on how spiteful you're feeling (and I'd be feeling pretty spiteful), you may want to notify APPIC. They are super responsive, in my experience.

Hello All,

Is there anyone that will be interviewing at Temple on Dec. 17th or Dec. 18th that would like to go on January 8th instead? If so, please private message me. 😀 Please...

Best wishes to everyone!

Haha I hear you RA... I have had a day to cool my jets about it... Perhaps it might be helpful to send something along to assure that there arent others sitting in the dark with this site!

Personalized interview invite via email. Call Dec. 14th the schedule interview.

Deaf and Hard of Hearing Track

THIS-WAS-MY-ABSOLUTE-DREAM-SITE and ROTATION!!!

😍😍😍

Non-personalized rejection email from Princeton House. Dare I say it doesn't sting quite as much after an interview day though! Good luck to everyone still waiting to hear from sites. :luck:

Non-personalized invitation to 1/10 OH by e-mail

Hi all,

I was offered an interview that I can't attend due to scheduling reasons (I already had other interviews confirmed on all their offered dates). I would like to send an email to decline the invitation in the most respectful way possible, while also underlining that I still intend to rank them for the match even though I can't make it to their site. The program is also across the country for me, so I don't think I could fit in a visit on an alternative date (if they offered it) due to both financial and scheduling constraints.

Has anyone declined an interview yet? Any thoughts or suggestions? I would like to contact them as soon as possible so they can send an invitation to another applicant if they choose to do that, but I don't want to seem like I don't appreciate the interview offer or am not planning to rank their site, because I am.

I understand this is a "good" problem to have, although it is still stressful.

Thanks

Could you request a phone interview?

You're right, this is a "good" problem! Before declining, I would let them know that you're not available on the dates offered, but that you would be open to arranging a telephone or Skype interview if they're willing (if this is, in fact, true). That way, you can see if they'd at least be willing to work with you, and it reinforces the fact that you're still interested in the site.

Non-personalized rejection letter from the site - Neuropsychology track. A friend in my program got an invite for the Neuropsych Track, so I think they've sent those out as well.

*just keep swimming, just keep swimming* 🙂

Jacobi Medical Center
Dear Applicat rejection letter attached to the email with no subject line in email

General rejection to Cherokee Health Systems via email today.

I was expecting this ... non-personalized rejection email from Cherokee.

Got a generic rejection letter attached to the email from Yale Child Study Center. The letter was very nice, and said while the applicants were impressive, they could only interview a small proportion.

Email invitation to Jackson Memorial. Yay, at this point I have more interviews than rejections. It feels good after not matching last year!!

Thanks psychgal222 and BorntoRun. I didn't want to be presumptuous and assume they could make an exception for me, but I ended up taking your advice and asking if they would be willing to accommodate a phone interview.

Thanks!

Got an invite, also!!!!

:soexcited: Mass e-mail interview invite for one of first four Wednesdays in January for an open house plus 2 individual interviews. :soexcited:

No rejections today! 5 interviews 7 rejections 8 sites left!

Interview offer for the St. Louis VAMC. Interview dates are Jan 4, 11, and 18.

The interview didn't specify what track, but I stated that I wanted to be considered for both the General and Neuropsych tracks.

I just got a call for an interview today from a site that sent out interviews for the program earlier this week (University of Louisville School of Medicine). It's not a no until you hear a rejection!

Received generic email invitation to interview at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, autism track. Interview dates: 1/4, 1/11, 1/18.

Got that one too. I wish they would have let us know sooner so at least I could have applied to a different site.

I know the AAPI says all payments are final but can you get your money back in that case? The email sounds like they knew COMCARE may not be able to accommodate interns this year. They could have at least said they were not accepting applications for that rotation until further notice.

I was wondering what most people's ratio of interviews to rejections seem to be. Looking around anecdotally at my own program and a little on here is that generally people are getting slightly more rejections than invites.

I personally have received so far 6 interviews, 8 rejections, 1 wait list (didn't even know that was a thing), and I have 8 more to go (though I think 2 of them are rejects-in-waiting because they already sent out interview e-mails.)

What's going on with other people?

Positive thoughts are going out to all of those who are struggling with not hearing and rejections. 😍

Ok now here goes random musing/vent. Being in this process now is opening my eyes to how bad the internship imbalance issue is. I am also realizing that people who are leading our programs (at least mine and at least PhD programs) are still applying crazy logic that amazingly is not based on empirical reality. Advice like - you shouldn't apply to more than 15 sites (really? look at the stats, your match rate doesn't go down until you apply to more than 21 so why not apply to more). And this constant "of course you will match, you are a strong student" - really, look at the stats? Also, coming from a PhD program, I think they totally dismiss the strength and numbers of PsyD programs and do not appreciate that many sites do not care about a PhD! They tell themselves that certain PsyD programs account for the majority of the applicants and they aren't qualified. Um, that is kind of a blind, sweeping generalization. In our program, we have to FIGHT for placements at the VA or a medical center and every year, students apply for match without either one of those placements and there is really no reason for it. It has a real impact on those student's interview options. This may not be the case in all PsyD programs, probably, but I find that my friends in those programs have a lot more options for practica. This really matters in my mind. What better way to base an internship hire than prior experience in the same setting with a reference? Duh!

Ok, I just needed to get that vent out there.

Good luck to everyone! Alot can happen in a week! :luck:
