2013 APPIC Internship Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
16 apps submitted on Oct. 31st, and so far only one "Hey, we got your app and it looks complete" message. I didn't think we'd hear anything until late Nov./Early Dec., but now that I hear folks are getting invites already, I'm a little nervous!

You can check the threads for the last couple years to be sure, but from what I remember when I went through the process in 2010, while my first invite came in I believe early or mid-November, the majority (for me and everyone else) didn't start rolling out until later in November and into December.

Out of curiosity I went back and surfed the 2012 thread. People started receiving preliminary interviews right about 11/09. But that was just the beginning, and many sites hadn't even had their due date pass by that time. So early ones come out here and there, but not too often. I guess I'll save my worries for mid-December...

Hi all! I just submitted 15 applications about a week or so ago and now am in the waiting game to hopefully get some interviews 🙂... I had a question... Does anyone know of a past thread that has common interview questions that are asked during the internship interviews? I figured they will ask about my dissertation and clinical work but are there any off the wall questions that anyone has experienced? I just thought it would be good to be thinking about answers. I wish everyone good luck on the internship hunting!

I wouldn't be surprised if the interviews are at least a few days, if not weeks, later this year due to disruptions caused by Sandy. I think it's very few sites that send invites this early and I'm not expecting to hear anything until around Thanksgiving at the earliest (that's when I got my first invites last year).

Re: interview questions

My DCT mentioned "Tell me about a difficult experience with a supervisor and talk about how you handled it."

Hello All,

I am having a difficult time locating the program designation for the Midcoast Psychology Internship group in the APPI. In addition, I have also not been able to find any information about the Adler School of Professional Psychology Juvenile Justice site. Anyone on here have any helpful suggestions?

Thanks and Good Luck Everyone!😀

Hello All!

To get the info itself, go into the APPIC online directory and search for all or all in the state of the site itself, the link provided will have information and usually the web sites affiliated with it. To get the designation info, go to the Natmatch page that's affiliated with Psychology and APPIC, you can get every designation number there.

Best of luck to all!:xf:

I have submitted 17 applications and already received an interview at WellSpan Behavioral Health in PA. Best of luck everyone.

I received a phone call today for an interview at Cincinnati Children's Hospital for the behavioral medicine track.

First interview invite for me. 🙂 Best of luck to everyone going through this application process!!! :luck:

Oh man. It's time, apparently. 🙂.

Congrats to everyone that's heard good news... hopefully I'll be joining your ranks soon!

Congrats on interviews so far! I received my first "we received your materials" email. Ugh I can't believe I am putting myself through this process again!

Do most sites send you a typical "we received your materials" email? I have not received any such emails yet. I'm starting to get nervous that I have not heard about interviews or heard from any of the sites.

Hope you all are holding up during this stressful process!

I applied to 13 sites and have received only one "We received your materials." email... so I'd say that no, it's not typical. I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Thank you! That makes me feel a little better. This waiting is killing me.

I think SDN isn't helping... I was fine until today when three more people said they've gotten responses. 🙂. And I didn't even apply to any of those sites!

Since then I looked up when people heard from my sites last year, based on SDN's appic 2012 thread. I can't believe there's still a month until 12/15!

I am on internship this year, and just for kicks went back to see when I started to hear from sites (one way or the other about interviews). I didn't hear a peep until December 7th, so don't worry if you aren't hearing anything yet. Also, I've heard that different types of sites have varying schedules - mine were all UCCs, and I think they are notoriously late since the end of semester is a busy time for them clinically. At my current site it was pretty clear that applications don't really even get reviewed for a couple more weeks.....

I haven't heard a word from any of my apps. Not even an acknowledgement of receipt. I went back and looked at last years thread and observed that my earliest site offered invitations on November 18 th. all my other sites were into early December last year. So I'm not freaking out yet.

If it makes you feel any better, I haven't heard anything either (interview invite or even a "we received your app" email).

Exactly the same for me. I just did that last part and realized that only one of the schools sent out invites (and they were mass invites, too) by this time last year.

So I'm gonna go take a chill pill. (Not literally, of course!)

A chill beer? 😀

I applied last year, and didn't hear a word (good or bad) from any site until Nov. 30th.

I actually think that keeping track of sites on SDN made the process more stressful for me. Knowing that one of my sites had sent out invites didn't actually provide me with any meaningful information - logically, I'd feel sad because I knew that it meant that I probably wasn't getting an invite (in each of these cases, I did get rejected down the road), but part of me held onto that last bit of false hope. It was definitely the worst of both worlds. Getting an unexpected rejection in my inbox definitely stung, but it wasn't nearly as bad as actively waiting several weeks for a rejection that I knew was probably coming.

If you're like me, you may want to step away from this thread until 12/15. My husband started monitoring it on my behalf, so on a couple of occasions when I was freaking out because a particular site hadn't contacted me by their deadline, he was able to step in and say "relax, no one else has heard from them yet." But for the most part, it was better for me not know what was going on.

Out of curiosity, was U Chicago a mass e-mail or a personalized one?

If anyone else applied to the University of Minnesota Med School... their website says that invitations will go out on December 3rd (Monday). So I wouldn't expect anything before then. 🙂.

Hey I was wondering.... I just realized that I actually forgot to attach my supplemental application onto one of my APPIC applications for a site that actually requires one. [Ooops!] Does anyone know if I can add the supplemental application after it's already been submitted, or is it too late? Thanks for any thoughts or advice.

Well, two things. First, if it's a supplemental application (e.g., "which tracks you're interested in," etc.) they're not actually allowed to ask for that anymore, so you should be good. The only supplemental materials allowed this year are assessment reports or treatment documents (e.g., treatment plan, case summary, etc.)

If you forgot to include one of those, well, I'm not sure... I'd try emailing the site directly, saying that you noticed your error, and ask if they'd accept the supplemental information as an attachment. From what I understand, sites are technically not allowed to do this, but you might find that some of them are willing to accept it.

For what it's worth, I've found some sites that had previous years' materials up and had actually changed some parts of their internship program... resulting in one of my cover letters talking about opportunities that might not even be available. ::shrugs:: I'm SOL on that one. 🙂. Nothing I can do about it now; just hoping it doesn't count against me too much.

Got an interview invitation this morning - personalized email

Thanks I did apply there, so good to know!

I am hoping that someone :xf: wants to volunteer for the honorary keep track of interviews role. I have 2 young children and I would therefore be a lousy keep track of interview gatekeeper. 😛 Seriously though, anyone want to do the honors?

I think nyprincess is already keeping track. (see the first post on this thread, on the first page).

Me too, rejection for Children's Minnesota. First email from a site, and first rejection. I hope this isn't a pattern!

Also got a rejection from Children's Minnesota. Screw them!

But I just heard from Nationwide Children's Hospital- got an interview for the neuropsych track. Yay! 1 for 2!

congratulations!

Can I ask, was it a phone call or email from Nationwide?

Funny I just got a rejection email from the neuropsych track at Narionwide, but got the interview at Minnesota Children's. Guess this shows how random and arbitrary this whole process is!

Hi everyone! I am sure this has already been asked....

I submitted my 19 applications on October 28-ish (it was mid Hurricane Sandy, that's all I remember!). So far one "we got your application" mass-email and one site had a question about my application. I know it's way too early to worry, but I keep seeing people posting that they've heard back and people in my program are starting to put on Facebook that they've heard from places.

I'm wondering, if sites reject you, do most places send you a courtesy "thanks but no thanks" email, or do they just let you take the hint when you don't get an interview invite by the deadline?

Hang in there everyone! 🙂

They should at least send you a rejection email. If you don't hear back from a site either way by the notification deadline (usually December 15th) then you should contact the site to double check.

I attempted to match last year, and admittedly probably was aiming way too high- my phd program cannot be considered snotty or elitist. Anyways, the only places (as best I recall) that didnt have that courtesy...you guessed it.. snotty/elititist... And I probably shouldnt have been applying there anyways. I bet most places are respectful enough that they do bother to do this though.

Just received an interview invitation from Nationwide pediatric psychology track.
Looks like Nationwide is on a roll today!

I am keeping track on 1st page, 1st post - since I started the thread. This way people don't have to fish through all the emails to get updates. 😕 I've asked that people message me directly that way I don't have to fish to find all the updates. 😱 Thanks and good luck to all this application year - may we all get a placement that we love!!! 😍

Thanks for your thoughts. Emailing the site actually sounds like a good idea. Fingers crossed. BTW, I think you actually might be able to change the Cover Letter, even if you've already sent it in. (Not sure about that, but it's worth a shot! Good luck.)
