2013 APPIC Internship Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I just re-read the internship brochure for this program, and it sounds like we will need to schedule phone interviews with the training director and faculty members of interest, rather than being contacted for an interview by them. So does that mean that essentially everyone gets interviewed by them? This seems really different from what most sites do, so I just wanted to make sure I'm not completely missing something.

(This is what they say: "If for any reason you do not visit our program, your application will not suffer as a result. However, if you do not visit, it is important that if you wish to train here that you contact me and faculty in your area of interest, at the addresses noted, to discuss the program and have your questions answered.")

I think your interpretation is correct. There may be some level of screening in whose requests for in-person visits are met. It seems as though they try hard not to require students to visit in order to be considered.

Received my first interview notification from the Louisiana School Psychology Consortium on December 1st at 11:45pm. Interview dates are Dec. 10, 14 and January 7, 14. Sigh of relief as I had received 3 rejections prior to this email🙂

Yay! Confirm your date!

Congratulations! I have been in a similar situation; I have a couple of rejections and waiting anxiously for some good news. 11:45 PM on a Saturday is a weird time to hear back from a site, but that gives me hope for some reason. They might be taking this process as seriously as we are 🙂

On a different note, does anyone know if there is a thread or message on here sharing sample cover letters? I have looked at a couple examples in the process of writing mine, but I am ambivalent about the quality of my cover letters and was hoping to see some more successful ones. I appreciate any info on this.
Thanks!

Salem must have a "rolling" invite process because I applied AFTER the first notification went out on Nov 15th. I wonder if I still have a shot after two people were notified about a week apart...I did apply the day of the deadline 🙂 still hoping...

Not sure how I feel about the pattern of my notifications..So far the order has been Reject Invite Reject Invite Reject...do I need a daisy? :eyebrow: They love me..they love me not ...

Lets hope they love me and love me..and love me 😀

Which Puget Sound--Tacoma or Seattle? I've heard from Seattle (got an invite to the Open House but can't go) but am still waiting on Tacoma.

It was University of Puget Sound in Tacoma. (Not University of Washington in Tacoma)

FYI- Hamm Clinic in Minneapolis just sent out an email alerting applicants that they are pushing back their notification date from 12/15 to 12/19 as they are preping for an APA site visit within the next week... was such a tease seeing that email waiting for me!!

I know. I had to read it a few times to figure out if this was good or bad news. In fact, no news 🙂

Guidestone in OH said in the APPIC site that they would let applicants know one way or the other by Dec 1st (a saturday). Do I email Dec 2nd to ask why I haven't heard or give them all of Monday and email Monday night?

Thanks for any opinions

I'd like to know about Guidestone, too! Haven't heard from anyone concerning a yes or no. Can you let us know what you find out?

Thanks!

On the plus side, a 50% hit rate isn't too shabby! :luck:

a buddy of mine who matched last year just told me he received 3/4 of his interviews (so 6/8) on December 15. don't give up hope!

Agreed, my friend got 10 of her 15 interviews Dec 13-15th so we still have plenty of time! Here's to another week down, and only 2 more to go! 🙂

Good luck this week everyone -- may all your e-mails be invites!

Oh my gosh, I had not thought of this song in an internship context!! That is hilarious!! "I've been waiting alllllllllllll daaaaaaaaaay......... for you to call me, baaaaaaaaaaaaby!" So true.

Have been sitting with my cell and refreshing email on a fairly consistent basis since 11/19... Nearly there, guys. Thanks for the mood music, BorntoRun!

Best, HB

I prefer to have the Talking Heads' Crosseyed and Painless lyric "still waiting..." in my head on repeat!

Ah, just got a generic rejection from University of Chicago (health). Guess they save the bad news for the weekend. I can now confirm that if you send an application to a site where you don't meet the minimun qualifications - they required 600 assessment hours for a regular health track - it is unlikely you will get an interview. Still...was hoping that was typo 🙂 Good luck this week everyone!

that is a typo. i know someone who received an interview and they definitely do not have 600 hours of assessment, does anyone?

Did they contact you by phone or email? Their final day for notifications is tomorrow and I'm trying to figure out what I should expect while at my practicum site all day! 😱

Who knows. First I saw the 600 intervention and 600 assessment on the APPIC page, but later they reiterated this in the brochure stating something like " candidates with less than above amounts of hours are unlikely to be prepared." Ib have a lot less than 600 assessment, so maybe they still consider others under the minimum on a case by case basis. I also heard that doctoral students in Chicago are required to do a full year of assessment externship. Can anyone speak to this? Thanks!

Personalized email rejection from Central Iowa VA. Said they were interviewing only 22% of their applicants this year.

I have about 1000 assessment hours, 400 from my Masters and 600 from my basic practicum and yes there are schools in Chicago require us to do an assessment practicum

600 face to face, direct hours?

600 face to face, direct hours?
I too would like to know.

and what about intervention hours. I will say I have never seen anyone in my program come anywhere near such a number of face2face assessment hours.

Woah, is this a professional school? Is anyone at a research based program (major university, funded Ph.D.) getting hours like this? I'm feeling pessimistic.

I am from an assessment heavy program and have been doing assessment for my RA position and in my practicums for 3 yrs and still don't have 600 face to face hrs. I have around 450. It seems crazy that someone could accrue 600 assessment AND 600 intervention hours through their doctoral program.

I'm at a major research university.
I have over 2500 hours (direct contact)
~1500 intervention
~500 assessment
~500 supervision

I'm at a very research-heavy program, and I have about 170 assessment hours. People in my program who specialize in neuropsych definitely have more than that, but I would be very surprised if any of them had 600, either. I think it really does vary by program, and unless you're applying to an assessment-heavy internship, I suspect (hope!) that it doesn't have that much of an effect.

12/2- generic rejection email for the pediatric psychology/neuropsychology track.

I have way more assessment than therapy hours so that is probably my biggest weakness which is just as bad if not worse from an internship perspective

Yes, schools in Chicago require students to complete a full year on assessment practicum, a full year on therapy practicum, and most complete a full year on advanced therapy practicum. Experiences and assessment hours vary widely in the diagnostic year, but there are a number of sites at which externs complete many, many batteries and rack up tons and tons of hours. The site Anachronism was at is VERY heavy in testing. One of my current supervisors did an externship there several years back and had a similar number of assessment hours. It's pretty much all that department does.

By the way, what I found particularly surprising about the Sunday University of Chicago rejection is that the email was titled "Interview at University of Chicago" ..a little empathy would have been nice 🙂 luckily I already knew invites had gone out earlier this week so I was expecting this but someone else may have gotten hopeful seeing this title.

I hear you. The rejection from the Greater Hartford Consortium has "Regrets" in the subject heading, and the message said, "it is with considerable regret that I inform you that the Consortium will not be considering you for the internship matching program for the coming training year. This is a most unpleasant task because the Consortium, blessed with so many applicants of quality, cannot accommodate all."

I am thankful for a non-misleading subject heading unlike that one!

They sent a non personalized email. It was written with the least amount of finess/excitement...went something like, "We are in receipt of your application. Our interview date is X. Look forward to seeing you then." The email and the single interview date left a negative impression with me. But, keep hope on that one...I wouldn't be surprised if they have more than one date that they save for other applications on a rolling basis. 🙂

Best of luck!

Thank you! That's funny, kind of robotic sounding.

I think the "best" subject line for a rejection should be "Regrettable Application Notification" or something

Agreed, my friend got 10 of her 15 interviews Dec 13-15th so we still have plenty of time! Here's to another week down, and only 2 more to go! 🙂

Thanks this makes me feel a lot better!!

Ugh, these quiet weekends are tough -- didn't hear from any of my sites! Here's to lots of notifications this week, starting tomorrow (I'm looking at you, Univ of OK). 😉

My funniest rejection subject line was "Sorry from Rush" ....that one hurt because it was early...before my Nov 15 deadlines!

So most sites have a notification deadline of Dec. 15th, but it falls on a Saturday. Should we expect to hear by the 14th (Friday) or have to wait until the 17th (Monday)? 😕

Thoughts?

I think that if they say the 15th, it could be on the 15th, although i am sure a few will be a day or two late. but many of my sites list no notification date, and so for them, who knows when i'll hear form them.

Right - but this year the 15th falls on a Saturday...

I'm guessing that most of them will notify on the 14th (Friday), but a few will either wait until the actual 15th or even default to Monday. Sigh.

Thank you for that, kyril & Txpsych14! It's very reassuring since I'm not hearing much so far...

Woah, is this a professional school? Is anyone at a research based program (major university, funded Ph.D.) getting hours like this? I'm feeling pessimistic.

Given that research hours with patients are not supposed to count for totals, my research heavy program would not be happy if we racked up that many direct clinical hours.

Yes..my first doctoral level externship was assessment...I ended up doing 900 hours all together since the site required 800

Wow. So how many hours per week did you work in that year in order to get that many direct contact hours? I had approx. 400 direct hours for assessment and that came through several practicums. Also, I was able to increase my assessment hours after I didn't match last year. I'm sure you had to be buying cases of 5 hour Energy to make it through classes, research, and an 800 hour prac.

I worked 25-30 hours a week then during December and May I worked full time cause school was out and I (still) had no social life 😉

Here's to hearing good news this week!

This may be the ONLY time in our lives that the weekends to go by so SLOW! 🙂

BTW, isn't it OUR professional that stresses the impact of prolonged exposure to stress?
How strange! 😛
