2013 APPIC Internship Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I have 7 interviews right now with 4 rejections, and waiting on 9 more sites (likely 2 sites are rejections since they've sent out interview notifications; UNC and Mailman).

FYI this is my second time applying. My application isn't the weak point, I don't have great interviewing skills and have been working on it pretty much everyday. I ask myself the questions while in my car or showering and then try to answer it. I ramble a lot, even with question I'm coming up with myself, hah!

Got an email invite from Tarzana Treatment Centers earlier today for Dec. 10 or 21 interview dates. Here's to hoping for more good news...

Do counseling centers generally wait longer to let applicants know than other types of sites? Of course the main type of site I apply to is the slowest in replying 😛

As far as I can tell from friends who applied last year (and last year's thread), this is in fact the case. Many counseling centers let people know on the very last day last year. I've only heard from 1 of 8, myself.

Those receiving notification from Dayton VA: Mind sharing which track you applied to?

Just got a rejection from University of Colorado Counseling Center via mass email, got wait-listed for Oklahoma University VA track this morning via mass email. The week before Thanksgiving, I was invited for an interview at Lexington, KY's VA via telephone call at around 9 am central time.
This is my second year applying, don't know what I'll do if I don't match this year. Still waiting to hear from 15...

I have a list of the most common questions asked last year a professor gave me...I can send it to you if you think it will help

sure, thanks, that'll be great! If you can PM me, I can give you my e-mail address or you can just PM me the questions 🙂 Thanks!

personalized email invite, adult track

It seem's like more of the VA's have responded to their applicants. I applied to all UCC's so I understand how you feel. I have received 2 interviews, 0 rejections, and waiting on the rest of my locations to get back to me.

Phone Invite this afternoon for UCSF Child and Adolescent Service (CAS). Interviews in January.

Got rejected here as well. Wonder how many applications they got this year because this was my "safety" site. Only hurt because it was my first counseling center reply. Got a VA interview but waiting to hear from 12 more counseling centers... Trying not to get discouraged!

Texas Tech was also a site that I thought I'd be more likely to get an invitation to, a "safety". Unfortunately, their rejection marked my 7th. 😕

Have you gotten any interviews? There is still time, hope you get some good news soon!

2 rejections waiting on 14 pending....I'm losing hope, it's my second year applying. Any advice?

Have you talked with your department? Maybe they can help support you in this process.

No interviews yet. I still have seven to hear from, so I haven't lost hope yet. 🙂 Just getting a little nervous.

Has anyone heard from the Danielsen Institute? Either a rejection or an invitation to interview? Thanks!

Mass email invitation from Eastern Virginia Medical School (Adult Inpatient/Medical Hospital Line) received on 12/3. Interview dates are 1/14 and 1/22.

Hello everyone (current intern here),

I just wanted to say to all those people who are getting a little discouraged, hang in there, it is not all said and done until that final notification date. Even that is not entirely true, there are two additional phases....so do not count yourselves down and out until you really are without an internship. It can be hard to see other people posting about interviews, but I can assure you that there are plenty of people (who are not posting on here) without many/any interviews yet. Plenty of these people will end up getting at least one. That is another thing, all it takes is ONE interview to match. If you only end up with a few interviews, or even just one, you can focus all of your energy and attention on those interviews. Some people with a ton of interviews will focus on things you won't have to (e.g., having enough energy to get through the process, hiding their level of fatigue during interviews). You will conceivably be less stressed out and fatigued...this could certainly work to your advantage. Good luck to all of you, hang in there!

General email rejection today from OHSU.

Also - I noted that La Rabida, (which I posted a Friday) is not on the master list. Today I found out their interview dates are: Jan 7, 10, 14, 17, 24.

GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!!!!!

I'm curious if anyone has received an interview by the Massachusetts Mental Health Center. I saw that earlier today someone received a rejection from them, but I haven't read any acceptance posts. I haven't heard either way, and their deadline is Dec. 3rd.

Thanks!

I'm wondering the same thing. I wish they wouldn't get our hopes up with that deadline! I'm hoping no news is good news since they sent rejections today. Good luck to both of us!

I have a question on traveling - the one thing I know nothing about is car rentals. Does anyone have any thoughts on the most dependable and reasonable car rental companies? I have tried Hertz before and Dollar. I actually got more car for my money with Dollar but that's been a while ago. Thanks for any thoughts!

I wanted to spread some hope out there.

A friend of mine applied for internship last year. It's a long story but there was a problem with her APPI and she only got ONE interview out of 15 applications. The interview went well and she stayed positive throughout the process. The day before match she started to struggle a bit, but still maintained a positive attitude. She matched at her one and only choice and no one knew any better. She is doing well and loving internship. The moral of her story is that all you need is ONE.

I also remember last year some people getting opportunities at some fantastic sites in phase 2.

I am hoping for good news for everyone soon!! 😍

It's happened in years past with various sites. My guess is that (and I don't say this in a mean-spirited way at all) your application didn't make their initial "cut" for an invite, but you were still competitive enough that they'd be ok with the idea of having you match there sans interview. So in a word, yes--it sounds like they're asking you to rank them (if you so choose) based on what you can learn about them through the brochure.

Yep, last year it was the Black Hills VA that did that. It's odd. Don't call them unless you have specific questions about their program. Just rank them if you're interested.

They're all pretty dependable and reliable and have similar policies. I just compare the price of the different companies and go with the one that's cheapest. Remember to look at your credit card perks, most offer some insurance for rental cars, though not the full coverage. It will save you a couple of bucks on your rental. Personally, I like Enterprise the best, but they're not usually the cheapest.

I didn't apply there, but someone I work with received an interview invite from them today.

General invite form A Nebraska-Western Iowa HCS. Interview dates are: Friday January 4, 2012 and Monday January 7, 2012 i

It's my second year also, I have one interview, a few rejections, and waiting on a bunch. Don't sweat it. Most of the invites came on the last day last year. And, with Sandy, a lot of sites pushed their dates back. Don't worry about it, even if your sites have already extended some interviews - different tracks, different reviewers, rolling invites all come into play here. No sense in second guessing or wondering or stressing over if they are or aren't going to invite you at this point. There will be enough time to stress during travel - take care of yourself now and know that you'll know on the last day.
🙂

Haha, yeah ... but you know how dreadful this waiting game is.

I just really try not to stress about it. Most of the invites came at the last minute last year. I'll stress then. Alaska's got a really great program though!

Got an email this afternoon from the Detroit VA - they've added two additional spots in specialty rotations. Email asked for a reply if interested in being considered for one of these two tracks in addition to the general positions for which they'd still consider you. Always nice to hear of more spots opening up, and I've seen a couple in the last few days. That's a good sign 👍

I got a phone interview invitation from La Rabida Chicago. A bunch of different dates throughout January (sorry don't recall all of them).

Enterprise has always been good for me. They are also mid-priced in my experience. My other two cents on the subject: I think it's worth getting a bit larger car if you have to go far. I'm not as fatigued in a full size/standard vs compact.

Avis is one of the more expensive but has great service, if that is a worry.

I would actually strongly recommend against Enterprise. Although I had had good experiences with them previously, the last time I rented from them, they accused me of making a scratch on their car I am positive I did not do and billed me $500. I had not bought their supplemental insurance and did not want it to go through my personal insurance because I did not want my rates to go up. I learned the hard way that the form you fill out at the beginning with x's to indicate pre-existing scratch marks, ends up being extremely unreliable when you're trying to argue your way out of this kind of accusation. I ended up having to get a lawyer to get me out of this situation. I will never again rent from Enterprise and will be sure to actually take pictures of the rental car from all angles at the time I pick it up in addition to filling out the form.

What city did that happen in?

I always order the smallest car and often get bumped for free to the compact or mid-size! 🙂

I got an email tonight about the Los Angeles VA. Interview dates January 3, 7, 9, and 14th. It was a generic email from the DCT at aroun 7:30pm.

What city did that happen in?

It happened in a college town in the midwest, not in a major city or at an airport rental location. An Enterprise employee, who was also the one who went over the rental agreement, came to pick me up in the same car that I rented because mine was in the shop. I think he must have made the scratch and tried to cover it up by pinning it on me. It was very shady. Without a lawyer, however, I would have had to pay.

Something similar happened to me this summer with National. But, it turned out that the employee entering the car info just clicked the wrong box saying I had damaged the car which initiated all the paperwork. It took several days for me to sort this out for their mistake.

I've rented a lot in the past years, and this was the first time I had any problems.

Received an email invite tonight from the Ohio Psychology Internship. I applied to the forensic track, but it sounds like both the forensic and the Heartland Behavioral Health rotations are interviewing the same day.

Interview 1/11 and open house/intro to the program on the evening of 1/10.

Tomorrow will be more information and less of the unknown! :0)
