coulda sworn I saw a Match News Update that Sutter Center dropped out. Check the APPIC website...but I'm pretty sure they arent participating anymore.

Regarding Kane County Diagnostic Center, I received my rejection in the mail today... Like paper mail lol I hadn't checked the mail in a week but it was postmarked 12/12. Odd way of sending out rejections!

I know right! That's how I got my rejection from Northeast Florida State Hospital! My BFF got his Kane interview on Wednesday I think. Someone called him. I'm gonna go check my mail now just to see...stay tuned!!

I haven't heard anything about Sutter dropping out. My friend is an intern there and she didn't mention anything about it. I am pretty sure the consortium itself actually expanded and they added back in the San Quentin positions that hadn't been funded in awhile.

First of all, there is Phase 2, so don't lose hope. Secondly, did you apply exclusively to top-notch / uber competitive sites? Geographic constraints?

Just got an email stating they are delaying their notification until Monday due to a technical issue. I guess I can temporarily stop assuming I was rejected since I hadn't heard anything.

do you mean that you are a 3rd year? that can be a stumbling block to getting interviews for some folks, at least from what i've seen

I'm in a similar boat, but I still have some left. 17 rejections, waiting to hear from 9 (though a couple have sent out invites and rejections already, so I am assuming I am not getting those). Glad I am not alone, though that totally sucks - for both of us. Can't quite figure it out either. I know my school is on APA accreditation probation, so I applied to extra sites to off set that issue. I still have my fingers crossed, but it's looking grim. Sorry you are having a hard time. There is phase II, and at least in California there is CAPIC internships which I am also applying to as back up. Good luck.

Hmmm, that's pretty odd. Are you coming from an APA-accred program? Any suspicions about what might be keeping you from getting invites?

Yes APA accredited. A TD last year said my experience were too diverse. I can't really help that because my school placed me in the two practicum sites then I got work wherever I could get a paycheck. Not sure how to de-diversify myself, I thought diversity was a good thing.

General email invite for interview at Colorado MHI at Pueblo (I don't even want to say that because having lived in Colorado before, I know I will be living nearer to Colorado Springs).

Dates offered 1/9, 1/16, 1/23, and 1/30.

I got this invite, and had a great interview experience today talking about all kinds of neat forensic issues with a faculty member and feeling on top of the world, then I checked my phone after the interview and saw this terrible tragedy and read some commentary quoted by a forensic psychologist, and it was all too incredibly real... I have spent much of this afternoon just finding myself praying and crying...Such a terrible, unimaginable tragedy. As a parent, away from mine during this process, I just went to pieces....Praying for this community and the families of these victims. So close to Christmas. We have presents wrapped under the tree. Santa clause pictures, baking. Cannot imagine....

on a brighter note, Sharp Healthcare sent out email notifications today offering in person interviews on January 10th,11th,14th, & 15th

Gonna be honest, the fact that the e-mail started with a dead-serious "Aloha" made the rejection go down a lot easier!

So I am now completely done. I have heard from all of mine. I ended up with
10 interviews
13 rejections

That's actually slightly better than I was hoping for! I was banking on 5-8 interviews.

That's really unfortunate, Resaroman. I'm baffled at this one too!

In general, I've found this whole question of diversity in our training to be very interesting during the application process. As grad students, I feel like we're usually told that grad school is a time to build our skills as generalists, and that we'll always have post-doc to specialize. And yet, I've found that the vast majority of sites at which I'll be interviewing are those with a pretty significant focus on my area of interest, and I'm doubtful that I would have gotten interviews there if I hadn't build up a lot of experience (some pre-grad school) in that area. It almost seems like in order to be competitive in this climate, applicants need to have a certain amount of expertise in a specific area. And that really seems unfair to students who really are trying to use grad school as a time to build a broad training base.

This is so messed up, in so many ways.

I truly believe that people like you, who are dedicated enough to volunteer and stay persistent for three years, will eventually win the day. This is my second year participating in this awful system and I am fortunate in having 9 interviews. I say fortunate because, in my cohort, I have seen some of the finest clinicians and researchers I know get shut out. While many of those who have received invites are also great clinicians, I have also seen many students get more than their fair share due solely to the 2 Ns (networking and nepotism). It is important to network. Given the crisis we are all in, I think it's also ok to benefit from nepotism. The APA calls it a crisis, but does ZERO. I experience it as a crisis, and apply to 30 sites and call anyone I knew with any affiliation to get an advantage. This system brings out the worst in people. Given the stipends we receive for these placements, we are like rats fighting over crumbs. What I am trying to say is that this system is inherently flawed and success in APPIC does not equal success in the real world. In the real world, I like to think, we are successful because of our skills, abilities, hard-work, and passion. While many of those who match possess these virtues, so do many who do not. DON'T GIVE UP!

For the Detroit VA I was under the impression they will not be giving us feedback. I have two friends who did their internship there and they said they had no feedback prior to ranking. I'm applying there too, but I have an interview that conflicts with their open house. I also know Ann Arbor VA only does an open house. I applied there, but I don't know if they will be giving us feedback at all.

A friend of mine who matched last year said she got feedback that her broad training experiences were very appealing to the sites to which she applied. But I've also heard that you have to specialize to match. It's all confusing.

Any idea when they let people know if they were no longer under consideration last year? Not that you'd be in a position to know, but, I am also curious about how many people they eliminate prior to the open house. i applied to a number of sites that have open houses and have a full-time job. it would be nice to know if there was a genuine interest in my application before asking my supervisor for the day off. Luckily, I live two block from this site but for others it may be an issue what with travel and emotional expenses etc.

No, you are not the only one without an interview! I applied to 14 sites and was rejected from 10 and am waiting for rejections from the other 4!!! This system is sooo messed up! I was rejected from a site I was externing at today and have been sobbing for 5 hours now. How hard should it be to get a stupid degree? Gawwwwwwwd!

13 rejections, 1 interview, 1 wait list, 2 sites that have made offers to others but not me so assumed rejections (please do not tell me to hold onto hope because they might still offer because I've been told that about 3 sites now that later went on to reject me and was extra upset because I hadn't prepared myself for a rejection - at this point I feel it's better to be pleasently surprised than let down). 2 more to hear from, but 1 of those has a late notification deadline.

Has anyone heard from Lincoln Hills School? Also, has anyone received a rejection from University of North Dakota yet?

I'm reminding myself that it only takes 1 interview, and I have 1 interview. But it's hard to stay positive through this process.

I'm so sorry. I agree that to come this far- completed coursework, proposed dissertations, passed comprehensive exams, etc. and have this massive roadblock at the end is unbelievably frustrating and heartbreaking.

This is my second year trying, and I didn't match at a site that I had dedicated a lot of time and energy to. It broke my heart, but in the end I think it was for the best. I'm in a much better place this year to apply and got to experience the VA system (which I wouldn't have had I matched last year).

Just keep swimming and keep your head held high! It's much easier to get a job than an internship. This is not a reflection on you as a clinician - it's a reflection of a broken system.

1. Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Center - in-person interviews on Jan 15th or Jan 17th OR phone interview on an unspecified date
2. Honolulu VA (VA Pacific Islands Healthcare System) - 1) online interview and submission of writing sample and 2) Optional open house on Jan 25th.

Yes, they did confirm that I'm on the waiting list today! 🙂 I was glad to hear that - even if it doesn't turn into an interview it was happy to be not rejected.

I have also received zero interviews. I applied to 15 sites. I am waiting to hear from UCLA, I strongly believe the I won't get an interview there, it was a long shot to begin with. The best news I got was today from Eastern Kansas VA saying that I am still in the ranking, but will not be interviewed. I am pleased that I will have at least one to rank. I will most likely then participate in Phase II, but will only apply to APA-accredited sites, so there are very slim chances that I will match then.

The worst part about this is that my program is in a more rural area so it is hard to develop a "niche" for sites since we typically have to take what we can get in terms of practica. I am from a counseling program so that automatically puts me in a not great position because clinical people seem to be far more preferred at the majority of sites. Further, not having a master's degree really limits what I can do in terms of practicum (e.g., could do no assessment at a CMHC) and it also prevents me from working a job where I can make any type of money next year. Also, my lease needed to be signed back in November, so obviously I could not sign because I did not know where I would be next year. So I will now have to move next year no matter what. I feel so lost. I am so ready to begin living my life--I literally don't even have a social life because I have spent all my time working on grad stuff (I seem to work much slower than most) while classmates have gone out together, or gotten married and had babies.

Thanks for allowing me to vent. I'm just feeling frustrated right now because I know I am qualified and ready for internship. It seems like the people that are more qualified than me have applied to some of the sites I applied to as back ups and are getting interviews there, which is understandable especially if it's a second time applying. I really feel like I shouldn't have followed the advise that I was given, and I should have applied to 18-20 sites.

I'm just so disappointed. I never fathomed that I would get zero interviews. I hoped for two to four. It's been getting increasingly hard to stay positive about this process.

Just got my rejection for the Sutter Center for Psychiatry (my #1 site) Northern CA Internship Consortium.

I definitely don't think I am all that and I bag of chips, at all, but I really don't get it. I have been planning for this internship process since my first semester of grad school. I passionately pursued the practicum placements that I thought would make me competitive. When I didn't have experience in a certain area, I did program development at my sites to make programs and opportunities for me to grow, all to be competitive for these beloved sites. I don't understand how I have interviews at sites where I have limited experience and was rejected at all the sites that I have been wooing and pursuing for 4 years.
Is there no rhyme or reason to this process? I don't get dissapointed easily- normally, I'm pretty positive- but I am really discouraged over this rejection.

Does anyone know what the deal is with WVU Charleston? Do they notify applicants when they are no longer under consideration or do we just assume we are not if we haven't heard?

I don't expect any notification because they do not interview. Contact them if you would like to visit, and be sure to contact the faculty you might want to work with. Review their materials on this.

I'm really sorry about your experience this year. This process is extremely frustrating and well-qualified people who have worked very hard are getting left out in the cold.
