So this question goes out to those of you finishing up the 2013 cycle. If you used your LizzyM score to help you choose which schools to apply to, how accurate of a predictor did you think that was?

I ask because I've noticed that the equation for the LizzyM score has changed over time due to increasing competition (used to be [(gpa*10)+MCAT+1] and now seems to be [(gpa*10)+MCAT-1] ) and I wonder if this updated formula is a good predictor or if it needs to be tweaked even further. I DO recognize that this is only a rough guide to where you are competitive, but think its a useful tool and am therefore curious about your experiences.

I found a thread from 2008 where people listed their LizzyM and then their admissions outcomes - could people do the same here?

http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=540806

Thanks for your input!

example:

My LizzyM = 72
My schools:
73 (Interview, Acceptance)
72 (Interview, Rejected)
63 (Interview, Acceptance, Withdrew)
68 (Interview, Rejected)
68 (Rejected w/o interview)

Edit: Non trad 4 years post graduation
Edit: 6/20 AMCAS, received 7/18 ish. Completed secondaries by Mid August
CA applicant

My LizzyM = 66.4

69.5 = (Interview, waitlisted)
71.6 = (Interview, Accepted, will probably withdraw)
71.5 = (Interview, Accepted, will probably matriculate)
69.1 = (Interview, waitlisted)
69.7 = (Interview, waitlisted)

Applied to a variety of other schools ranging from 64.5 to 70. All gave secondaries, but all also rejected me post-secondary or left me in the dark...

It would also benefit if you note when you submitted your application.

Traditional (one year off), resident of California. Secondaries all done by the end of August.
My LizzyM score: 80.
So this is high enough to give me a "high chance" everywhere, but obviously numbers aren't everything! Obvious caveat that my list is top school-heavy (started declining interviews after first acceptance).

76.3: Accepted
75.1: Accepted

74.1: still waiting to hear
74: Rejected pre-interview
73.7: Waitlisted
73.7: Rejected post-interview
73.4: Waitlisted
72.6: Rejected post-interview
72.4: Accepted
72.3: Rejected pre-interview
72.3: Waitlisted
71.6: still waiting to hear
71: Waitlisted
68: Rejected pre-secondary (OOS)

Note to others: I believe this is the source of current LizzyM scores.

Holy moly, sophocles, I didn't know that about you. You are now 1000X more awesome.

You guys are beasts, but if your score is >75 the notion of using it to pick schools is moot. You are competitive anywhere. Wheres my sub-70 amigos at?

We're getting close to just asking users to copy/paste their MDapps into the thread. :laugh:

I know what you mean 🙂 , though lots of people who post on this forum don't have an MDApps for anonymity reasons so I thought this would be a good way to compile all the data. Thanks so much to everyone who's posted, this is really helpful for me and I'm sure for other future applicants! Keep 'em coming!!

This is definitely really awesome, and a quick and anonymous way to help others figure their chances of getting in 🙂

Thanks everyone!!!

Thanks, I appreciate that.

I have read from LizzyM that this makes a big difference and can help bring up some of the weaker points of the application. I think she said to add 4-5 pts to the LizzyM score and I think this really helped me out. Such a big part of my app. and I spent a lot of my time talking about this time in my life.

Everyone has their own stories though, and I think people do benefit from having a diverse class.

This is neat. I'll bite. Did this using GPAx10 + MCAT - 1.

Reapplicant, submitted AMCAS in mid-June, all secondaries by the end of July. White female, fairly traditional - doing a SMP during my gap year. I'm from IL.

My score: 67.2

68.8 = Interviewed, Waitlist
70.5 = Interviewed, Waitlist

I applied to 19 schools but withdrew from most early in the cycle because I was accepted at my top choice.

Non-trad, ORM, complete mid september after an early Aug. MCAT.

My Score: 69.4

Non-trad, avg age, non-urm, rounded to whole #. Designated IS/OOS only for schools that give preference. Submitted primary in mid August, most secondaries sept/oct.

II, Interviewed, Accepted:
65 (IS) w/scholarship-still considering
67 (IS)
67
69 (IS), likely matriculating
70 (OOS), likely matriculating
1 school no lizzy M, based on MSAR I would say around 69-70

II, Withdrew:
64 (oos)
65 (oos)
67 (oos)

Pre-II rejection:
72-not surprised, top 5 heavy research school, I had minimal research.
70-very surprised, thought I would get in here
67 (oos,school strong IS preference, but I applied because I really want to move to this state)
68-surprised by this school, known as a safety school in my state, no interview granted. Maybe I didn't put as much into the secondary essays knowing I wasn't keen on going there.
66 (oos)-

Withdrew from a couple more early in the season.

I had no post interview rejections.

Thoughts: Reapplication is definitely a hurdle to overcome. I did not recieve II's at some schools where I was invited during my last cycle, despite a much stronger application. Applying early is probably as important as everyone says, although outliers do occur (my M.D. acceptances were my last two secondaries, which I completed in mid October). Apply very broadly and expect nothing.

Overall, i'm very happy with the institutions where I was accepted and i'm looking forward to next year. Although their LizzyM scores may not be out of this world, I'm optimistic about the education I believe I will receive.

Traditional student, non URM, male

My LizzyM score = 69.2

Accepted at:
68 (IS and matriculating)
65.3 (OOS)
67.2 (OOS with 50% tuition scholarship)

Is that a thing?

I know most people here are just specifying whether or not they are URM, but I don't think there is a separate calculation for that.

Haha nevermind, I noticed your post stating "and URM-Score of 66" and read it wrong.

How does one do a URM score?.

Just through my own anecdotal experience, using the LizzyM scale I would add 2-3 points for chance of acceptance and maybe even more for chance of getting an II for a Waitlist spot, if we can differentiate it like that. But maybe LizzyM can give us a definite answer

Nontrad, white kid

LizzyM = 78
matriculating = 76

In addition to this I got into to all of my big safeties that I dont feel are worth listing.

Non-URM, middle class, applied late july.

I'm very happy with where I'm going to be going (a top 20), but I think my cycle shows that being cookie cutter really kills you for the top 10.

So are people calculating their LizzyM score by +1 or -1 to the gpa(10)+mcat?

White, non-unique, good EC's, trad app.

My score: 78

For schools I didn't withdraw from:

Accepted
69.7
74.1- Attending
71.0
70.0
69.2
68.4

Rejected:
73.4
73.7

Is your last name Ferguson?

I think it should just be MCAT + (GPA*10) just to keep things simple, straightforward. And the same should apply for the schools too. All this plus one and minus one stuff complicates things.

Non-traditional LizzyM of 67. Submitted AACOMAS and AMCAS at the middle/end of June. I really tried to keep my school selections to my LizzyM score. If the school LizzyM was more than a point higher, it got crossed off the list early in the process.

Accepted
61.1(DO)
63.6(DO)
67.6 (MD) IS and matriculating. School has huge in state bias.

Interviewed, Wait list and withdrew
60.5 (DO)
67.2 (MD)

II then Withdrew pre-interview
55 DO
58 DO
60.3 DO
60.5 DO
