On Wednesday July 17, 2013, the annual NIH GP Fair will be held in Bethesda, MD at the Natcher Conference Center. Applicants to MD/PhD programs have the rare opportunity of visiting booths with information about 60 MD/PhD programs (MSTP and large MD/PhD). Many program directors (last year ~20) will be in attendance including at least a couple who are frequent posters here.

You don't need to be doing an internship at NIH to attend this event.

If you applied early in the season, your AMCAS application would have been submitted to the program already. You might be able to discuss it with me or other PDs. Some programs, like mine, start interviews as early as August or September. For highly competitive applicants, this might be a first "safety" interview.

Here is the information: https://www.training.nih.gov/gp_fair

I hope to see you at there!

This FREE 6th annual event is at the NIH campus in Bethesda, MD on July 17, 2013. The 2013 brochure is out: https://www.training.nih.gov/assets/GP_Fair_Program_2013_-_508.pdf. I had provided earlier the links for the 2012 event.

On July 17, at 11:30 am–12:30 pm, there will be a session about "MD/PhD: Is It for You?" at the Ruth L. Kirschstein Auditorium. This session is co-sponsored by the AAMC-GREAT MD/PhD Section (Directors/Administrators). Over a dozen MD/PhD Directors will be available to answer general questions at the completion of the general Q&A. You can learn about specific MD/PhD Programs at each of their booths including mine.

You don't need to be doing an internship at NIH to attend this event. Many applicants from the Northeast drop by the event, but you need to register. NIH also requires you to check in with a driver's license or other government ID.

More info and registration at: https://www.training.nih.gov/gp_fair

I will be staying overnight and will be hosting a dinner (@Doubletree) to learn more about my MD/PhD program in Texas. Please let me know if you are interested to join in. RSVP by 3 pm is necessary.

Do you think it would be appropriate for us to print out our AMCAS (if not yet verified) or resume at the event? I just don't want to offend anyone. I'm intending on coming :)

There are several people who bring and distribute to several programs their resume/CV (1page or one double-sided), not the entire AMCAS application. Each table will be asking you to write some information about you, a resume, speeds up things. I personally don't like the business cards (see below), but a one-page resume is something that I keep.

Here is something NIH made for trainees attending this event:
https://www.training.nih.gov/assets/GP_Fair_Advice_-_508_-_ps.pdf

"4) Bring copies of a one-page resume that is appropriate for the educational path you plan to pursue. Your resume should include your contact information (e-mail address that you check regularly and that you will continue to use after you leave the NIH and phone numbers), as well as your academic information (college/university, city and state) and highlights of your qualifications. Make certain that the document is grammatically perfect.
Some individuals also choose to bring business cards to give out. If you are planning to give out a business card please make sure that it is professional and contains your name. contact information, and current position."

Hope everyone who attended had as good a time as I did. I thought the event was great, lots of programs were represented, and I learned a lot. Also glad to have met the people I did.

It was great being there! Thanks for everything, especially for sharing your advice and giving info on your school!
