2014-2015 APPIC (internship) interview thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
For those waiting on Hines: Last year I went into major freak out mode (it was one of my top sites) after I saw that others had been getting invites for at least several weeks since they are personalized. I even talked with someone who apparently had an "in" who told me that letters would be finished being e-mailed out at a certain date. Once that date came and went I officially wrote it off for myself. However, a week later I received the invite (neuro track).

I had a similar experience last year with the general track. It was several days after first seeing invites on here that I received a personal invitation.

I know Vanderbilt -VA Internship Consortium sent out invites for the general track, but what about the neuro track? If so, what interview dates were offered? I'm thinking I should just assume i'm not getting an invite.. 🙁

I got a phone call invite for the neuro track at the Vanderbilt VA sites last Tuesday. Since I'm local (i.e., driving distance), they offered Dec. 4. It's very possible that they are still doing rolling invites for their January dates, so don't give up hope yet!!!

I was invited to an east coast site, but I live on the west coast. It's not one of my top choices, and I'm questioning whether it's worth the travel and costs. Any suggestions?

Ugh, that sucks (for me)....I was really hoping to interview there. But congrats on your interview!

ANOTHER attempt at one of these:

Anyone with a Nationwide Child-Pediatric date on the 15th or 16th willing to switch with me on Jan 5th? I know those early Dec dates are a premium. =/

Yes, it is always worth it to attend an interview. I do not know your personal situation: years in your program, family obligations, financial status, but from my personal experience of not matching last year, GIVE YOURSELF AS MANY OPPORTUNITIES TO MATCH AS POSSIBLE. I had 6 interviews last year, and was concerned about not matching, but figured I would be okay based on the stats. I didn't match, and I regretted not applying to sites in more undesirable locations, or sites that I initially thought were beneath me. In hindsight, I would rather have spent a year (name your hell) than delayed graduation by another year, and have to pay for applications and travel to interviews again.

They make phone calls and a friend of mine received an invite on Monday.

To clarify - your friend was invited for the MGH Neuropsychology Track, specifically? I know other tracks at MGH have been invited, but I haven't heard of anyone getting a neuropsych invite yet.

I guess that's probably a rejection for me 🙁
Not necessarily! For example, UCSD does phone invites and I think their notification process took 3 or 4 days at least - so it's quite possible MGH Neuro is also still in the process of calling people. (I really hope so, at least!)

Someone earlier asked about the Ann Arbor VA open house. I went last year. Not a lot to add on top of what others posted, aside from that they do ask you to fill out a name tag. Of course, all of the open houses that I attended had name tags.
Cara, did you feel as though it was useful enough for them to evaluate you... or you them (which is what most indicate open houses are best for)? Do you think the way they ranked depended on individuals who attended -- despite them indicating it wouldn't?

Honestly, no, but I felt that way about open houses in general. I had no way of knowing how they felt about me and I felt like I didn't learn as much about sites at OHes as I did at interviews. However, I matched at a site that only did an OH despite my feeling that I left absolutely no impression on them whatsoever, so the no interviewing thing ended up working out for me at least. 😉

I can't answer the ranking question becaues I have no idea how they ranked people. I do feel that attendance didn't really matter that much at Ann Arbor. Can't speak for other OHes. However, I get the general impression that sites that hold OHes base their rankings a lot on paper materials.

Thank you. I have to give it some serious thought. Given some newer personal and financial factors, it may be unrealistic to consider it (and I may not have even applied had I known then what I know now). We'll see.

Note: Learned my lesson about counting places out; I thought I didn't get an interview because they sent out a mass invite for the general track before Thanksgiving for interviews 12/15. They must have rolling invites for later interview dates.

It seems that the general consensus is that if invites were sent out and you didn't get one that you're probably going to get a rejection. Does that seem to be the case? I still haven't heard from any but one of my sites has sent out acceptances and one has sent out rejections. I'm not sure if I should be hopeful for one or both.

Not necessarily the case. I just got an interview from a site that I had crossed out because they sent invitations a week or two ago. I think some sites do rolling invitations, particularly when they have multiple interview dates.

In desperation I must ask . . .

Has anyone heard from:

-Illinois Masanic?

-Alexian Brothers adult php/substance abuse treatment track?

Thanks in advance!

Just curious, how are other folks coping with the uncertainty and the unpredictable reinforcement system we find ourselves in? Do you check your e-mail every 30 seconds, once an hour, or not check it regularly at all? I was good about not checking it until this week, and now it's torture. At least for match we know exactly when we are going to get the news. Still waiting to hear back from 15 sites here...

I compulsively check my email as long as I'm not with clients. Compulsively. It's bad. Every time I get an email I have a mini-heart attack.

Constantly. Then I'll flip to my spam folder, you know, just in case. Then to this forum to make sure no one has heard from my sites yet. Then back to my email. Then back to my phone in case I missed a call (despite the volume being turned up). Then I look over my site list again. Still waiting on 14.

Super healthy habits.

Very nice rejection email though.

Ahhh, the email-checking. I have gone too far the other way and have just filled my life with distractions.

Today I:

Got the kid up and to day care
Took my wife's car to the shop and got 2 new tires, haggled an alignment and oil change
Put new wipers on her car and stopped by her work with a burrito, exchanged cars with her
Stopped in at another car shop to discuss how to recover from a DIY project in which I got way over my head
Went to the pharmacy to pick up meds
Went home and cleaned out that DIY project minivan
Called the tow truck to have the van towed
Stopped back into the shop to leave my info and authorize the repair
Got to the office at 3:00 (note, this is my 9-5 day job, thank the old gods for nice bosses :owle:
Emailed a mentor about a thing
Emailed a lawyer about an old tax return I've been needing to amend for like ever
Called, then emailed American Airlines about a ticket change/refund (avoid them, please, they really just don't)
And now this. The SDN thread.

Maybe I should work on my dissertation?
Hang in there everyone.
