2014-2015 Dermatology Interview Invite Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
anyone know if med students can get in trouble for accepting compensation for switching interview dates?
Um, no. Realize most people are compensating the person switching for that person having to then switch flight dates (as many flights levy penalties), hotel reservations, etc. to accommodate the other person needing to switch. It's paying for that person's inconvenience which they normally would not have. It's not a bribe as that person already had the interview.

Whoever has a Harbor UCLA but hadn't confirmed, please decline so I can be considered! 🙁 🙁 🙁

I really need more interviews!

I hope people know that Harbor UCLA is not the "real" UCLA program that people think of when they think UCLA.

for those with >15 invites, are you planning on going to all of them if your schedule permits? i have had mentors tell me to limit to 12-15 to prevent fatigue from impacting interview performance.
I don't understand that reasoning. Even a fatigued interview is better than no interview. If you don't go to them, and somehow don't match, you will be kicking yourself.

A few hundred dollars or so is nothing if it's your career or even a year of having to reapply on the line.

That's what I thought as well. Grin and bear it. Interesting a faculty member would say what they said to him/her, but it's not like faculty are always up to date on how competitive it's gotten.

well, i think my PI's thought was that if i tired myself out for programs i was less interested in, i would be too fatigued to do my best when it came to do interviews at my top choices.

I think there's something to be said for that. IN GENERAL, I think everyone would advise derm applicants to apply broadly, take all the interviews you can get and not be too good for any program. But there are those few chosen, god-like individuals who get 20+ interview invites and are probably OK to apply a slightly more confident strategy than the rest of us mere mortals. The applicant with interviews at all the big name places probably doesn't need to interview at the small community program in the midwest so that he can figure out whether it will be #20 or #21 on his rank list. The sheer volume (and hopefully the quality) of interviews speaks to your competitiveness, at least on paper.

I would only be more cautious if you're catching hints that maybe you're struggling to impress people/programs in person. But with 20, it would be hard to beat the odds and go unmatched.

thanks for the input! definitely feeling very lucky so far in the process. what kind of hints would these be to look out for?

This is a really good question that I've wondered about. Thanks for bringing this up. Any attendings or residents care to comment on this?

Has VCU really not given invites out yet?

Can anyone comment on this program/how this interview day works?

If I recall correctly from a few years ago, you'll have breakfast, and a tour of the clinic. Then you'll have maybe four or five separate interviews each. I think it was a pretty low-key day.

I have a schedule conflict with interviews. How bad is it to NOT interview at your home program (also got a letter from there)? Would they be upset?

Um, no. You definitely interview at your home program there considering your letter writer (who in theory wants you to match at his program) wrote a LOR.

I think it would be poor form to not interview at your home program. Statistically, this is the most likely place any of us will match. Slash, these people have probably supported you throughout this process, may even want you to attend their home program, and might be offended if you choose not to even interview.

Derm is a small field. PDs talk to each other (and faculty they know at other programs) about candidates. You don't want to upset anyone at your program (where, honestly, you need the most enthusiastic support all the way up to match day).

Are you guys sending out thank you notes to all 20+ people you interview with?

Some of the program I've interviewed with rank the candidates immediately after, would you still send out thank you notes to all 20, or would it be fine to just send one to the coordinator, director, chair, a few others you may have had good conversations with?

Definitely not. Send thank you notes only to the people you felt like you really connected with during your interview. Sending it to all 20+ people you interviewed with is crazy bc you may not have connected with with all of them and looks forced. Definitely include the PD for sure.

out of curiosity, do most people get a few more invites in jan from cancellations or does this happen more rarely in derm?

Yeah, definitely not for super applicants who would like more academic programs. Please please turn it down so that people who really need interviews can have an opportunity. 🙂

Is it just me? Or anyone else not planning on sending thank you notes?

I've considered maybe emailing the few people who've given me a business card and told me to contact if they had any questions. Should questions arise. But otherwise I just feel like it's not really worth the effort.

Thoughts?

I sent zero thank you notes, both for TYs and for Derm.

Matched my top choice for both.

I'm applying this year and not planning to send any thank you notes. I think most places rank right after the interview and from most people I have spoken with, no one cares about thank you matters

I've sent out a few, does getting comments like "Best of luck with the match" generally mean something bad or is it just a completely neutral thing?

I mean I guess they can't say anything else but I wish so bad they would just break match rules and give me more or straight up reject me lol

Completely neutral. It means nothing.

hi guys! i'm trying to make a spreadsheet in order to rank the different programs I've interviewed at so far while they're fresh in my mind. I'm wondering what people think are important categories to consider? i.e. location, size of program, fellowship match rate, didactics, continuity, etc. What aspects of a program are most important to you guys?

Exposure to cosmetics
Exposure to Pedi Derm, Dermpath, Mohs
Presence of protected half day during the week
Didactic Conferences
Whether you got along with the faculty

Hey guys, I have an interview at UC Davis on Jan. 7th and am looking for someone to switch with for any of the other offered dates. I see the going rate is 500 so I am willing to compensate whoever switches me $500 for the inconvenience.

Does telling a program that you will rank them #1 matter at all? At what point do you do this? If they rank you after the interview I guess it may not change things, but I've heard on the trail that some PD's (for prelim) like to know.

People do this.

But honestly the match algorithm isn't really designed for this make a difference in terms of the programs mind. And because things like "how far did program xx have to go down on their match list to fill their program" aren't even published...there's really no incentive for each derm program to rank applicants in any other order besides the order they want them.

Especially because its not as though these programs are particularly worried about not filling a spot.

If a pre-interview dinner is noted as "required," and flight times render it physically impossible to make it and no interview swap is possible, what is the appropriate course of action?

contact the interview coordinator at the program?

hello all! If anyone has the stony brook AM session on 2/5 and can stick around new york that afternoon, I'd greatly appreciate you switching with me to the afternoon session!

Though I can make either session, I originally chose the afternoon so I could be in their last group interviewed before the rank list is made. However, it will be very expensive to fly across the country that evening so I would really appreciate it if any one in the region interviewing that morning would be willing to stick around. Thank you for any help!

Well, it seems it is now (going to be) radio silence on here. I just wanna say it was a pleasure tracking this thread and connecting with some of you. Many of your comments were extremely insightful and I wish everyone the best of luck. Cheers!

Another fine instance where the gunner spirit to get that extra edge above the competition wasn't quite as advantageous as it seemed in our heads. 🙂 I think we've all over thought things a little too much lately. I hope you find someone to switch with.

Actually you have misdiagnosed this case. The attempt here was to entice a potential gunner by declaring the session closer to the rank meeting and therefore more advantageous. Not a bad try at facilitating a successful switch.

Looking to swap Cooper 1/15 for 1/8! If interested message me or email me at the email i listed in the google doc. Will pay!

Hey everyone, since interviews are out by now would it still make sense to email programs at least where I received interviews to let them know I have a couple publications(case reports) accepted to journals or is it minor and even not worth doing. If it is, should I email the program coordinators before the interviews?

Thanks and Happy New Year! Best of luck to everyone.

True, but I wouldn't call anyone willing to switch with someone not offering any compensation a gunner! 🙂
I can't offer compensation, so I was hoping it would help to point out it was the last interview session on the last interview day! Hopefully it will work out. :xf: Happy New Year everyone!

Does anybody know what time the University of Connecticut interview day ends? I need to book a flight for right after the interview and I'm home for the holidays and left the information packet that they sent at school. Thanks!

12 pm! See ya next week 🙂

It looks like someone added a "rank list" tab to the GoogleDoc. I want to remind everyone the GoogleDoc is flexible, so you can add things you think will be helpful. I also wanted to remind people to please add to the "away rotation impressions" tab. Away rotations can be stressful and expensive, so please help future applicants by adding to the list.

Now that rank lists have been submitted, please take some time to fill-out the "away rotation" tab of the Google Doc. Again, remember how frustrating it was trying to figure out where to do your away rotations (i.e. is it crowded, can I get a letter, do they interview their rotators, do rotators only get to shadow, etc) . So, please, please, please, if you have a minute, post your experience(s) so that rising fourth years can have some better guidance.
