2014-2015 SUNY Downstate Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
No problem! I'll call Monday if no one can settle by then! I just need to know if I need to stay on top of parents or roommates. Neither are great about not throwing mail into some pile to be worried about later, if ever to be seen again.
My mom just kind of threw it down on the table...BTW its a small envelope...so don't freak out when you get it. When I saw it was like oh gawd rejection..and read it with one eye closed haha

Crucial info right there. I def would've waited for someone else to rush home with wine before opening a small envelope...thanks!

Is there anyone else who interviewed in early September that hasn't heard anything yet?

This guy right here. I'm trying not to over analyze it..."trying" being the key word.

I did a good job putting it out of my mind for a while. But now I am starting to over analyze it. I'm trying to tell myself it's because I live a ways a way that the mail may just be slow. As days go by, that is becoming a less comforting argument.

Congrats everyone accepted! When were you guys complete after the secondary?

I feel like so many qualified IS friends of mine haven't heard anything since July... So I want to figure out if this is chronological or random...

Accepted 10/24, complete mid July, II early August, interview 9/17, IS and LizzyM 73

...am I missing anything? Honestly if you already interviewed your best bet is to stay off of SDN and wait for a letter in the mail or an email from them.

Accepted! Awesome news after a 10 hr work day. Don't give up the hope yet, I interviewed 9/15 and others after that date were notified before me. I live very close to the school, so I assumed I was a hold/reject, but was pleasantly surprised tonight. LizzyM 70-75.

Conplete Mid July.... Lizzy M 68-70, IS, and a solid application with interviews from upstate..einstein..albany... Idk why Downstate is ignoring my app- its my #1 choice 🙁

Any advice?

On my interview they seemed to place a big emphasis on commitment to service and experience working with underserved communities. Are there ways you could get more involved volunteering with underserved communities and then write about them in an update letter? Once you write the letter, you also state why you're so interested in the school. Otherwise, it's just a big crapshoot sometimes. It seems like people can be highly qualified for 10 schools but only get interviews from a handful of them.

Just curious...Are acceptances sent by email, postal mail or a phone call? Or a combination of these?

Thanks! I got an II after all. Any recommendations of how to prepare for this interview? Is there a writing sample?

Congratulations! I think it was a really pleasant interview and it sounds like on the thread that that's been the general experience. The questions (for me) were straightforward and all things that I had prepared to answer by reading about "common interview questions." So just the normal things--know your application, be curious about the school, and try to relax. There was a writing sample that was really no big deal...there's no way to prepare for it but it wasn't tricky or anything.

Congrats to everyone with acceptances! 😀

I'm just hoping I can get an interview. It doesn't seem like they've sent out ANY II's in over a month. Does seem a bit strange.

They're nowhere near done sending out interviews. Downstate has a long interview season. 🙂

Thanks for the resassuring words! Do you know if it would do me any good to send an update letter prior to any interview offers? Or should I hold onto the update letter in case I want to send it post-interview. I haven't heard from them for more than 2 months now.

It's cute that downstate uses snail mail to send out acceptances (makes it more special?)
Do we treat this like undergrad in that a heavy letter packet means acceptance and a small thin envelope = rejection? Just curious 🙂

The acceptance was a small, thin envelope. As far as I know, I think they only mail out acceptances..?

Does anyone happen to know what the maximum number of individual letter of recommendations SUNY Downstate accepts?

I don't really know, to be honest. If it's a substantial update, go ahead and send it, I'd say, but that's my personal opinion - I don't have much more information as to how the admissions office works than you guys do, apart from some timing details.

Can someone comment on the writing sample during interview day? Thank you! 🙂

It's nothing really just a picture and a paragraph

Has anyone gotten an II from downstate recently? Or anyone have any idea around what batch they seem to be on, as far as date of submission goes? Submitted Late Aug and haven't heard anything..

Received notice that my app has been placed on hold for spring review - can anyone comment on the likelihood of receiving an interview invite with this status?

With all these holds I'm getting nervous. Does anyone mind sharing if they are IS or OOS?

With all these holds when I received this one I was like

If it's meant to be then it'll happen. 🙂

I just sent in an update yesterday... ahh I hope it wasn't too late to save me from a hold. I've been sitting on it for a couple weeks now (revising neurotically of course) so if I get a hold I'll be kicking myself
