2014-2015 SUNY Downstate Application Thread

I got email acceptance about 6 weeks after interview. Followed up by regular mail. I think acceptances are slowing down now since they are beginning to fill their class. Not my choice school but better than nothing.
Please ignore this post. This person is completely wrong; no medical schools are even close to "filling their class" at this point. They may have given a large first wave of acceptances, but they are no where near done. If you check this person's recent posts, he/she has posted on multiple threads saying that "acceptances are slowing down because the school is beginning to fill their class." No medical school has their class "filled" until May 15th, and most, if not all, are not filled until well after that. Up until then, some people may be holding acceptances at 8 schools and, once they make their choice, 7 other spots open up. In addition, some schools release all of their acceptances on the same day later in the cycle (ie. Hopkins, Harvard, Cornell, etc.). Therefore, many people who might be "overqualified" for a school may, perhaps, be holding an acceptance but are likely to withdraw if they are accepted to one of these other schools.
All schools will be handing out a bulk of acceptances through May 15th, and will continue to hand them out afterwards until every class is full. Often the acceptances come simultaneously with period of silence in the middle. There are people in the class here that received a waitlist call up until a few days before orientation in August, and similar instances occur at every medical school. No class is full until classes begin in August.
That's really not the case! I didn't receive my interview invite until late December for a January date, and many of my classmates interviewed in December & January (possibly later, but I'm not certain how long the interview season is here; all I know is that LOTS of people here now interviewed in Dec/Jan). Seriously, don't give up yet! 🙂Hey Keladry, how's it looking for people who have not received an interview invite yet? I'd have to imagine the situation is pretty grim.

I wouldn't say that it looks grim. Downstate interviews all the way through the end of March and the number of applicants interviewed per week stays relatively constant throughout the year (as far as I know). I received my II in mid-February and interviewed in March.

Were spring hold and acceptance the only possible options after an interview? I'm in the former camp and was kinda curious
Anyone interviewed later than 10/15 heard back yet ?
Hi guys, I got an email that says "Hold for Spring Review Application status after initial review". Is that good, bad, or just nothing special?
Anyone know how Downstate treats non-trad applicants? Applied late in cycle and complete for a month or so now. Really hoping for an II. Would pay double tuition!! (But I'd never admit to writing that)! 😉
I'm a nontrad and was accepted. I didn't get the sense that Downstate has a particular bias in favor of nontrads, like some other schools. I don't think being nontrad can ever really hurt you though, you've had more time to accumulate experiences, maturity, and perspective.
it's better than being rejected? but I don't think it's good per se?Hi guys, I got an email that says "Hold for Spring Review Application status after initial review". Is that good, bad, or just nothing special?

When did you interview?
Last week of October. Good luck to yall!
Thanx and good luck to you too.Last week of October. Good luck to yall!
There is a lot of movement off the waitlist for sure. Visit earlier year threads and you can get a fairly good idea on this.Anyone know what the acceptances are like at Downstate. Do they accept a lot more than the spots they have available in their class or do they only accept class amount and draw from the waitlist after?
Anyone else apply Aug/Sept not receive a hold status still waiting to hear something? Any thoughts on what this could mean?
Right here. It means we haven't been rejected or put on hold yet, and are possibly still under consideration. 😉Anyone else apply Aug/Sept not receive a hold status still waiting to hear something? Any thoughts on what this could mean?
Any acceptances lately?
Could any current students comment on the pre-interview hold status? It seems ominous, but the likelihood of receiving an invitation to interview with this status seems to vary tremendously between medical schools. Thank you!
I don't want to be discouraging, just honest, but generally an early pre-interview hold is not a good sign in my experience, As far as I know (MS1 here), in both my experience applying and hearing from my classmates, I don't think that too many people on pre-interview hold get interviews later in the cycle. Again, it is still possible, but I haven't heard it happen in my experience. Nonetheless, I hope that everything works out for you and I wish you the best of luck in this cycle (both in your Downstate application as well as all other applications!

For those that have been constantly following this thread, I apologize that I sound like a broken record, but I was complete in mid to late-August last year and received an interview invitation in February for a March interview. We're only halfway through the cycle, plenty of II left to be handed out, and many opportunities still remain. Best of luck!

Praying that you're right! I'm in love with the school and really pushing for their MD/MPH program!!
Yes you can, they said that at my interview
So I interviewed here early october and got "hold for spring consideration" like 3 weeks after the interview which was uncharacteristically early in my opinion...Anyways, I'm wondering if I should send letter of interest. Wondering if anyone's in a similar boat and plan to send the letter/updates/etc? Or is it too early now to send anything at this point?
Does anyone know how an acceptance into their MPH program affects your chances at their MD program? I know they say each admissions process is completely separate but is there any correlation between both programs?
Don't think there's any evidence for this in writing, but the dean of admissions for the MD program said that if you get into MD they will take you for MPH because (loosely paraphrasing her here) they're so nice in the MPH department.
Anyone interviewed the week of 10/20 heard back yet?
