2014-2015 SUNY Upstate Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
You'll be notified if you need to arrive either around 8 or around 10. I was told to go over at 10am. So it was class/lunch/tour then MMI from 1:30 to 3:30 ish. I actually didn't see another group interviewing earlier that day and my interview group was pretty big (20), big enough that its hard to imagine they organize two of such groups in one day. 's it could be that everyone was interviewing at the same time on a given day. Not sure. They are pretty friendly and open. I wouldn't hesitate to give the office a call.
Oh and Congrats! First II is something to be celebrated about for sure. It's a great school. I'm proud to have interviewed at Upstate.

Thanks for the helpful insight 🙂.

I ended up scheduling my interview for early December (the earliest available date they had). What are your thoughts on calling the admissions office to ask for an earlier interview date if they come available through rescheduling etc.?

Since it's rolling admission, it would be nice to interview as early as possible. If I were you, I'd probably call and ask them what would they do with the open interview spots after Oct 15th--people with better offers in hand might choose to withdraw. If it'll be put back up online, then I'd be trying my best to monitor the system. Of course, it would be nice if they have some kind of wait list for interview spots then you can get on it.

how much preparation do you think is needed for MMI? II today and there is an opening to go down this Wednesday... I haven't done MMI yet
Not sure if you meant to talk to me. I don't have a very good answer. It's very individualized. MMI tests knowledge about ethics, logical thinking ability, communication ability and sometimes teamwork. I didn't do much prep topics wise. About your stats requirement question, I don't know how to answer either. I think only you are qualified to answer that.
Don't be nervous and be yourself--sounds simple but it really worked for me.

I just interviewed here today. It's a great place, really impressed me! The MMI wasn't too bad, and Jennifer Welch (Associate Dean of Admissions/FinAid) gives a great info session. They are very transparent about the review process and give you a really good idea of how your decision is made and when you're likely to hear your result. You only have to wait about 3-4 weeks!
I was in the earlier group (arrived at 8:45am) and we were done by 1:15--really short interview day. I had a great time. If anyone has any questions I'm happy to answer them!

Is the essay that you have to write on a computer or paper? How did you prepare for the MMI? Thanks!

It was nice potentially meeting you and maybe even chatting with you, lol. :ninja:

I was also impressed. So far it's the first school to show applicants their anatomy labs and the students were really nice and also helpful. Good luck with your app cycle!

The essay MMI question is on a computer. As for prep, I basically did the same thing I did for regular interviews: looked up everything I could about the school, read some ethical scenarios, etc. This was my second MMI and my second interview overall, and I thought it was more laid-back than my first one. Hope I could help; good luck!!

I forgot to mention this, that was also a big plus. And everyone was really nice, and seemed to be really happy.

I haven't heard a thing from SUNY and I was complete last August :-/

I haven't heard from Buffalo or Downstate in almost 3mo. Here's my plan, wait until a week or so after October 15th when decisions on the first set of applicants are made then inquire about the status your application with a phone call.

I am assuming they've put people like us under consideration, and are waiting to see how many applicants accept spots once decisions are out.

Can anyone who interviewed here tell me what time the day ends? Thanks.

I think it depends on whether you are part of group 1 or group 2. I believe the absolute latest you would be there is 3:30, like what NervousNerd said. But I was in the earlier group and we were finished at 1.

Pre-II hold just now - any chance of coming off this?

I JUST got the hold email as well, must have been sent in a batch. The way I see it, hold means your a competitive candidate, just they have higher up people they would like to see first. One good thing is that the SUNY's don't get a crazy amount of applications so I think hold is not necessarily a death sentence. Of course, I'm not claiming to know or understand this process at all...

IS applicant, complete around 9/20/14

Put on interview hold yesterday. Applying OOS, but a Syracuse University Graduate.

The same was said at mine. Though they didn't state it as an absolute, more like, "If everything goes according to plan, we will start sending out acceptances on October 15."

for people who have already interviewed, did your online portal change to "You have not scheduled an appointment to interview for the MD-MDCN program. Please select one of the available dates highlighted in blue"?? i interviewed last week

Mine still has the date, but I interviewed a while ago...

no response yet here. anyone hear back yet?

Let's all take a moment of silence to think back to the day we knew we were getting our mat scores back and we're refreshing the Twitter/SDN posts. Today we're waiting for medical school acceptances. Your welcome.

ACCEPTED!!! (via email at 9:02!) Absolutely ecstatic! Good luck to all waiting to hear back! Interviewed first week of September.

Congratulations!!! Praying that I may be your classmate next year 🙂

Do they usually send acceptances out in waves? Or like acceptances first and then the waitlists... I don't know how these things tend to go lol
