Maybe not, but you're certainly still free to update yourself on the list - it's a self-selective list anyways and it would be good to see people who improved themselves. 🙂 Good job!
 
How many schools do you all plan on applying to? So far my list is at 17 DO and 4 MD (all in state MD)

I'm in a similar boat as you. I'm applying June first even though I take the MCAT 8/21. I don't see any harm in getting the other parts of my application verified ASAP and then when scores are ready ill request they get sent stat. I'm waiting on two more LOR's to arrive at inter folio from my letter writers. I just filled out some thank you cards for the letters I received so far. I have a first draft of my personal statement so I'll have that finished by the end of May. Other than that I've been doing clinical research in the ER, finishing up with my last two classes this semester, working as a scribe part time, medic part time, and volunteering at the clinic once a week. I'm also trying to train for my first 5K even though I mostly jog, but I'm really getting into it- good stress reliever!

You should apply to some low tier MD if there are no grade replacement in your GPAs. Since you are somewhat a shoo-in for D.O., apply to 6-7 D.O. and 13-14 low tier M.D.

Thanks for the encouragement. There are no grade replacement, and my AMCAS sGPA should be over a 3.3.

My plan right now is 10-15 MDs and 10-15 DOs.

That would be way too many schools, wouldn't it? 20-25 MD and 10-15 DO = too much for me to handle.

My main focus is still on DO, just to be safe.

Yah, well all I'm saying is you've got a solid shot a MD. You should really consider optimizing things. I think 10
Solid DO schools + 20 MD will be relatively easy to accomplish by august.

You don't need to apply to more than 7 DO IMO. If I were in your spot, I would cut down on the number of DO and add more M.D.

But I've heard that 3.7 c/s GPA and 32 MCAT is what MDs are looking for. I am happy about my MCAT, but I wonder how lethal my <3.3 sGPA will be for MD schools

It will be a problem IMO, but my point was that if you know you have an excellent shot getting into DO, you should try to maximize your MD chances as much as you can because there is also a chance. Your chances at MD might be a 50/50, but it is worth trying IMO.

Nah not all of them. mean I think the national average is about there. But that means that the average has both the top and low end. You have the top end schools bringing that number up. While having the lower end schools bring it down. So apply to a mix of low-mid tier schools. The reason for tossing some mid-tier schools on there being that they get less applications than low tier schools. So as long as you have some sort of connection to their mission, you surprisingly have a greater chance of getting noticed, so long as you are over their base line numbers.

Also I would agree 5-10 DO and 15-20 MD.
 
cGPA 3.47 (possibly 3.51 after this semester) sGPA 2.99 MCAT 27 (retaking May 17th).

I'm a little scared.

Will your science GPA go to 3.0 or higher? I think that is the most important thing you need to improve! Nice cGPA 🙂

It might, but honestly I'm not even sure that I calculated my sGPA right. Do you think I have a chance anywhere with those stats?

The < 3.0 sgpa would be your biggest hindrance. Many schools have gpa cutoffs at 3.0, so you should really focus on bumping it. Even one class retake could push you over the cutoff.

Otherwise, yes, the rest looks pretty decent. Do you have good ECs and clinical experience?

Unfortunately my school doesn't let me retake classes unless I get below 2.0 in those classes, which I haven't.

I think I have decent ECs, maybe you can tell me. I'm in leadership positions in two organizations, I have 50 hours of volunteering at a hospital and 50 hours at a community health clinic (I have about 100 or so more volunteer hours from other things), I took part in a service trip last year and led that trip this year, I'm part of theater group and an accapella group. In terms of clinical experience I have about 50 hours shadowing a neurosurgeon (DO), 70 hours shadowing a general surgeon (DO) and 40 hours shadowing an internal medicine doctor (MD also she is my mother).

How about this summer, do a retake at a CC? Maybe some class that you are already studying for the MCAT so it isn't a hindrance. I bet even retaking a C-> A or B->A give you enough of a bump.

I would take the time to calculate your actual GPA values... It's SUPER important!

You're app is good otherwise and I think you will get an acceptance somewhere with your current MCAT score if you apply broadly!

Does that mean I would have to wait a year to apply? There are some schools that don't screen based on sGPA right? Thanks for all your help btw.

No, you should still try! It would just help your app if you were to do the thing I suggested, but that doesn't mean you won't be successful if you don't do it.
Try searching the forums for places that screen for 3.0 sci GPA. The three I know are CUSOM, MUSOM, and KCUMB. Good luck!

I actually just recalculated both GPAs using this spreadsheet http://forums.studentdoctor.net/threads/amcas-gpa-calculator-revised.590424/ and without this semester's grades my cGPA is 3.46 and my sGPA is 3.27 (evidently I am really bad at math). Does this change my situation a whole lot?

Well first off, what is your AACOMAS gpa... because AMCAS and AACOMAS will definitely be really different

I mean as long as you can retake a couple science classes and get your sgpa over 3.2, you should be able to get into a DO schools even with the current 27 MCAT that you have..

But again, your gpa stuff really depends on whether you have been doing AACOMAS conversion or AMCAS, because not only does AACOMAS not count math towards your sgpa, but they consider retakes rather than just averaging grades, which can seriously change your gpa (for instance my AACOMAS gpas are a 3.6 vs a 3.2 AMCAS - which is a massive difference).
 
So I know i pointed out my situation a while ago in the "chances" thread but I figured here would be appropriate too.. I've been given a great deal of advice and this process has been an emotional roller coaster..

cGPA- 3.03
sGPA - 3.03
Mcat pending..

Should I even apply this year? (is there a chance I will get in anywhere? Or an interview that will give me a fighting chance)
and for that matter are the interviews as "make-or-break" as they have been made to seem?

Lastly, what kind of MCAT score am I looking at needing?

All basic questions but I guess I've been given so many opinions from people detached/too far gone from the process that my whole understanding is somewhat convoluted at this point.

I mean statistically speaking (thats all I can really comment on since I am going through the process this upcoming year). Those are pretty low gpas even for DO. I believe some will weed you out (I know some DO schools autoscreen at 3.1 and 3.2 gpa), but some set the bar at 3.0 (not sure which ones). For those ones that would not autoscreen I think you would need maybe like a 31 MCAT. Typically I think they would rather have a high gpa and average MCAT than the other way around... you are one of those where an unofficial/official post-bacc or maybe some retakes would really help. So either
a) kill the MCAT and you are ok
b) do retakes and/or post-bacc and get those gpas up
c) do both and you get to go to better schools

Maybe think about doing a gap year? They can be surprisingly beneficial.

My AACOMAS sGPA is 3.20 (although I'm not sure if food science classes count towards it) , so a little lower than my AMCAS sGPA. It's mostly due to math not being counted in science. My sGPA is over 3.2 for sure for both AMCAS and AACOMAS and at this point I don't think retaking classes is a viable option.
 
I cannot fathom why you would want to apply to more than 15 schools (tops!) The application fees themselves are outrageous and the secondary prompts are time consuming. I picked four (yes, FOUR) schools to apply to, and I applied very late as well with mediocre stats. Still accepted. I personally feel as though you should save some of your money versus applying to 15 DO and 30 MD schools. Apply to a place you actually want to go based on their goals and ideals and how well they match yours. That is what is important in the long run.

A very good mentor of mine applied to 2 schools... Duke and UNC. He got into both... He had a crappy gpa (thought got a 4.0 in his master's degree) and killed it on the MCAT. But when it came down to it, his wife was going to school at UNC so it was like, he only had two choices. I feel that if you can express a legitimate reason to wanting to go to a school, they are willing to hear you out... so long as your stats meet the cutoffs heh.
 
Does anyone know off the top of their head which DO schools screen at 3.2, which ones at 3.0, and which ones don't at all? Similarly for the MCAT?

I know CUSOM screens at 3.2, and MUCOM screens at something... PCOM screens at 3.0, pretty sure, and supposedly PCOM screens out any subsection below 7. Beyond that, I don't know.
 
Good GPA, great EC's, just this MCAT is what's holding me back. Hopefully I can score high enough to stay in state, if not, I'll probably join you all in this thread.

I found myself in a similar situation as you last year being stateless. I moved to Texas a year ago and found a job and a permanent residence. In 2 weeks I will be a Texas resident and use that during this application cycle. I am shooting for TCOM.

I do not know if I am qualified to be on the list, but I certainly feel like I am fighting an uphill battle!
