Apparently reading from last years cycle, there was some question on what makes one an underdog?

With your MCAT that shouldn't have mattered. Did you apply to top heavy? People with lower stats than yours got accepted last cycle

Nope. 2 state schools with >80% instate and only got 1 interview. 8 other privates had lower stats than one of the state schools (and avg lower quartile in the country) and no interviews.

But again, we are neglecting other parts of the app - numbers do not tell the entire story as factors such as special considerations, race, PS, ECs, etc are not counted in. People with 4.0s and 40s were rejected last cycle too (and every cycle).

Yea wait until its about as perfect as you can get it. If you hold off until next cycle, all your stuff will be done and you can apply on day one. Your wallet will thank you.
 
Question for all underdogs whose GPA dip is a result of family/financial/personal/social/etc adversity: are you explaining the reason for your grade trend and how you've grown from the adversity in the personal statement?

Then pay someone to look over your stuff. Alternatively, go to a tutor. If you got only one interview at DO, it was your fault. You're not an underdog. You're just not doing what you need to do to have a good application.

...what was your school list? 1/10 is either very unlucky or you did a poor job of selecting and/or secondaries. ... Us true underdogs are now even more scared.

How can your AACOMAS be verified this fast?

Those were all MD schools. 1/10 doesn't seem that unreasonable with those stats.

Their email said they will deliver my application the 3rd week of June.

There are several people who have been verified according to the official AACOMAS thread. I was surprised. Happened sometime last week. I logged on and could no longer edit my courses and the front page said verified. Had all of my transcripts in by May 13th.

Why is there a gap between when your verified and when they deliver applications to schools?

No DOs because I thought I would at least get into my 3rd tier (relatively) state school because their averages are about my level (lower mcat by a lot, higher GPA by a little). But it may have to do with the fact that junior year was the year I messed up in, and last cycle I had a 3.3.

SO. Clarified, that was last year stats with this years GPA - lol I was tired when I posted I apologize!

Yeah I copied most of my application over from the last year so they just had to update my classes. If this is your first cycle it will probably take the 2-3 weeks they talk about.

hmmmm please take a look at my replies and other posts before you call me out on not doing a good job on the most important application of my life (to this point).

Also, if you gone through the process yourself, it does not boil down to any one, or two, sets of numbers and a personal statement, but a mix of a lot of different factors. Alternatively, if in fact your only conflict with me is that I am not an "underdawg", then go ahead and make an averagedawgs thread and I'll gladly cry about my bad writing skills there 🙂

I don't care what thread you post in or if you consider yourself an underdog or not. Factually you are not, but if you only get 1 interview with those numbers, something else is deeply wrong. That could be a letter of recommendation or your application. I wasn't trying to attack you. I think it's only fair that I pointed out your application skills because you pointed out that it could be your application due to your poor ability to complete it.

Random question off of this. I've been kind of curious how "good" my LORs are for some time now. I know 2 of the 4 are spot on but the other two are from science professors that honestly barely knew me. I enjoyed their classes (bio chem and organic) and asked for a letter. My concern is though, as nice of guys as they are and even though I did ok in their classes (a B and a C for both of them but they both pride themselves on making their classes exceptionally hard) I was not one of their star students. I know I can't view a confidential letter on Interfolio but would a school I applied to last year tell me if I had a bad letter? I would hate for this to be another unsuccessful cycle just because of something like that.

Also just a side note, I really don't think either one of them would write me a bad letter but I'm just curious if a school would tell you if your LORs were weak.

I think your best bet to get that question answered is just to call the school you applied to last year. I kind of doubt they would but people who have applied said some schools do tell you why they rejected you if you ask the right person. To be safe - do you have another science professor you could ask a LOR from? Perhaps a class that you got an A in?

I do and I don't mind asking for another letter but if there's nothing wrong with my old ones I'd just as soon not go through the hassle.

I asked my most recent science professors for letters and for whatever reason, they took forever to actually send the letters in, even with me asking and reminding them at least once a week.

I'll go ahead and call a couple of the schools that didn't interview me and ask for ways I can improve. If the letters come up at all I'll get new ones.

I had a 2 letters from professors where I got a B and it didn't stop me. It depends how the letter writer wrote it. On one hand he or she can say "the student received a 'B' but worked incredibly hard over time and would have surely attained an 'A' if the course would have ran longer" or they could say "the student received a grade of 'B.'" One makes you look better than another.

There are services out there that will read your letters for a price and rate it in a 5 point scale without telling you the actual content. I never used one, so I don't know of the top of my head what companies do this; I just know some do.
 
Its been so long, I can honestly not remember when interviews actually start up? If I recall the two schools I applied too had interviews in September and November and I was a pretty early applicant.

Anyways, I took my boards about a month ago. Waiting on those scores to come in. Residency graduation is next week.

Fair - again, I got both GPAs up by about .1 since last cycle, so I guess if I still get a 10% interview this time, there really is a gaping hole I am not seeing/being told (besides the PS which is actually okay this year). But since I am not applying DO this cycle, and putting my nuts into one basket (the SMP basket), I'll take my leave on this thread - sorry for the inconveniences. Best of luck to you all.

Hey sorry if this has been answered (this is a long thread). But where exactly did you apply? Did you apply to just MD? When did you apply?

Your answers could be:
Applied late and to 10 MD... so obviously you wont get in
Applied early and to the top 10 MD schools... so obviously you wont get in
Applied late to DO after failing at the MD stuff... obviously you wont get in...
If your answer was "I applied in June/July and to 10 DO schools" then this is actually a very interesting situation... so if you actually have stats that are actually above many MD schools, some DO schools will actually tend to dismiss your application under the impression that you are applying to DO only as a backup. You would have to have a ridiculously compelling case for "why DO" (and it needs to show in your app not just your interviewing) in order to receive much love.

If your answer was "I applied in June/July and to 10 DO schools" then this is actually a very interesting situation... so if you actually have stats that are actually above many MD schools, some DO schools will actually tend to dismiss your application under the impression that you are applying to DO only as a backup. You would have to have a ridiculously compelling case for "why DO" (and it needs to show in your app not just your interviewing) in order to receive much love.

No worries, it was late (Oct) and to 10 MDs (lower range). I was told that my PS needed work, in addition to not high enough GPAs. Almost did get that state school though d:

Honestly, I would do two things..
1. Apply this year and register for the class.You can take it online or in the class it, or even at a different school doesn't matter but if your registered for the class the schools will see that your retaking it on your transcript and will still consider you.

2. Call one of the schools that say they want a C or better. My undergrad didn't work on the +\- system so I didn't have to deal with this but I'm willing to bet at least some of the schools would be fine with a C- as long as it's a C something. But I'm not sure so give them a call. Most schools are pretty good about answering questions like this. 🙂

Yea I would say go for it. They could just skim over it and it might not even be brought up (do not bring it up to them during an interview or on your PS or something). Or worst comes to worst they say "you are in, just retake that class."

I would say just do what the person above suggested then. Apply to all of the schools you are interested in, then just sign up for the class and plan on retaking it. It would seem crazy to me to let one class play a decision in where you go to school... If it is ever brought up or whatever, just let them know that you are signed up to retake, that would be the end of the discussion most likely.
