This is a running list of interview notifications and rejections for the 2015-2016 APPIC internship application cycle. Please utilize the following format when providing information on interview notifications:

-Site name & Match ID number
-Track (if applicable)
-Invite or rejection

-Date notified
-How notified (mass email, personal email, phone)
-Interview date
-What you've done lately to cope with this crazy internship process

Thank you to everyone who provided updates on notifications for the past couple of months. Feel free to keep sending me notifications if there are anymore that come in. I wish everyone well during the interview phase and look forward to hearing where everyone matches. Best of luck!

So it begins... when was the earliest invite last year? Something like November 7th?

In skimming through last year's postings, there was one as early as October 31st. The second earliest date was 11/6.

Good luck everyone!

Just wanted to chime in real quick - nobody warned me about how terrible the waiting period between application submission and interview notification is! Remember to self-care over these next several weeks...you are likely to not hear back from sites until after Thanksgiving (I think I heard from about 3 the week of Thanksgiving but the rest did not come until well after). Enjoy the fact the internship applications are (temporarily) off your hands and try not to stress over these threads and your email :) These applications take up so much time and effort over the last several weeks/months, so take this time to catch up on some other projects (dissertation??), sleep and eat well, and socialize!

I am seconding this! I found the hardest part of this whole process to be this waiting period. I had completely unrealistic expectations on when I would hear back from sites, thinking it would be as little as 2 weeks when really it can be up to 6 weeks. I applied to 21 sites and had only heard back from about 5-6 before Thanksgiving, and like 11 of them I heard from in the final 2 days before the notification deadline on 12/15. The BOP sites tend to reach out earliest because you have to go through the USAjobs application which was open for a week in mid-November (and I'm assuming they're still doing this this year).

The best piece of advice I can give is to make peace with the fact that you won't hear anything for awhile (sadly), and this doesn't mean anything good or bad. It's very easy to start overanalyzing what the sites are thinking about you if you don't hear from them. Try to hold back from obsessively checking your email because that totally ruined my life last year. Hold off for a week or two, and then set a couple times a day you want to check. This way you save yourself from having 10+ moments of disappointment everyday when inevitably your mailbox is empty. Everyone is in the same boat. It's best to keep yourself distracted and have realistic expectations in the process.

Thanks sms06h for starting this thread and thanks to previous applicants for the advice. Does anyone have suggestions/ideas for how to schedule the interviews when invites come in? I hear that that can be chaotic and overwhelming a process.

Keep a calendar with you, whether it is electronic or paper, and note all the potential interview dates offered by each site to which you applied. It helped me to make very quick decisions about which interview dates would or would not work for me while I was on the go.

The interview days/slots can fill up pretty quickly. It's a bit of a double-edged sword; you don't want to be obsessively checking email every 5 minutes but you also want to make sure you respond quickly to invites. It always helps if you can schedule sites in the same or nearby state close together. Don't forget to build in travel time. If you are left with absolutely no way to schedule an interview that won't conflict with a previous arrangement, ask for Skype or phone. Interviews can be any day of the work week (though I don't believe I ever had a Monday one), morning or afternoon, half-day or all day. Sites primarily contact you for interviews M-F up until 5pm in their time zone. With that said, there were a good deal of folks last year who posted on here about getting offers on weekends or at like 8pm at night. Hope that helps!

Missed an app deadline but I submitted anyway because that site's submission portal on APPIC website was still open. Anyone know of instances when sites will look at apps submitted after deadline? Or did I just waste my $25?

I have heard of some sites leaving their portal open longer because of receiving a lower than typical number of applicants, so they may very well still look at it. However, some may use a late submission as a factor in determining an interview offer if you're one of the applicants in the "unsure" pile.

I've noticed quite a few sites with significantly fewer applicants in the past year or two. Wonder why?

As mentioned above, I bought a cheap planner and wrote in it every single potential interview date for all of the sites that I applied to. I kept that planner on me at all times.

Best of luck to everyone in this thread (the lurkers, too!) I found waiting to hear about interviews the worst part of the process, so do whatever you need to take care of yourself during this time!

Thirded on using a planner or printed out calendar to keep track of dates. Like cara susanna, for those sites that listed their potential dates, I recorded them all so I'd have an idea of which overlapped with multiple other sites and which were on their own.

Related to that, if I'm remember correctly, Mondays and Fridays tend to be the most popular days to offer interviews. So if you have the option of another day, I'd almost always recommend jumping on it ASAP so that you can keep as many M/F open as possible.

This is really good advice. Remember that reviewers at most sites are also managing other tasks, including taking care of the current interns (which is relevant to whether you want to be there) AND you want them not to rush through reviewing what you worked on so hard AND most will review all of their apps (often by multiple reviewers) before decisions are made and offers made. So being patient will be worth it in the long run. Practice those Distress Tolerance skills. And work on the dissertation. A key factor in final decisions can often be how far along you are on the dissertation. Many sites will ask about that in the interview. Being done or having a defense scheduled is a clear advantage, so every small step you make toward that goal between now and January will be worth something....Not as much fun as binge watching Parks and Rec..but it will be a great investment in a better internship year to have it behind you.

Thanks for the advice from kind applicants of the past. Is it normal to not feel as good about finishing apps as I expected? I thought it would be such a relief or feel more like an accomplishment.

Also, do most sites notify you about interviews via email? What % do so by phone? Just curious.

Seemed like most were by email, but definitely happen by phone, too.

I had 2 sites contact me by phone to invite me for an interview. The rest (and large majority) of the sites sent interview invitations via email.

Agreed, especially if you are interviewing in places where the weather might get in the way later on. Last year, my final interview got cancelled in late January due to blizzards. That said, I might also recommend scheduling your higher-ranked site interviews later on; you'll have worked through the beginning jitters and will have refined your answers to typical questions/case presos.

THIS. You will be a little nervous your first few interviews (at least I was). Having a few interviews with sites that were lower on my list as "practice" was really helpful when I finally had interviews with my higher ranked sites. I was less nervous and got the hang of the process/types of questions asked/how I would respond. On the flip side, I also wouldn't wait to do your higher ranked sites at the end -- because you will be exhausted. The middle is the sweet spot :)

Assuming I have the good fortune to receive any number of interviews >1 (!), I'm planning to front-load my schedule (i.e., December) with interviews within driving distance (for me, about 9-10 hours, max), and save the flights for January. Preemptively loading up on podcasts for many long drives . . .

For those who have been through this process already, what were the most common questions asked (besides how your dissertation is going and describing an ethical dilemma/difficult or interesting case, etc)? And what were the most unique or difficult questions you remember? Am trying to use this wait time to prep for questions for my hopeful interviews :)

Actually from being an interviewee, interviewer, and now a supervisor it is less about the content of your answer but more about social skills and how you fit in with other interviewee during social functions. Some give brilliant responses to questions but do not engage effectively with others socially. Some of the leading candidates on paper blow it during social function. For e.g. During lunch or breaks going out on smoke break is not recommended even if you smoke. Get a nicotine gum or patch for interviews. Don't text during these time. Social functions as important as other areas during the process.

Uh....

Just for the record, I could give a **** about how "social" you are or how well you "fit in" so long as you are appropriate and are not rude to anyone. I'm sure this is prevailing logic used, as opposed to the high school logic described above.

Yeah. The content of your answer definitely matters. Social functions, while important, not anywhere as important as your answers to questions and how well you can back up your CV. At least that's the way things work at reputable sites.

It was all across the board. There are most often questions on: ethnical dilemma, supervisors (best and worst experiences), theoretical orientation, assessment experience, talk about a case, and responding to hypothetical vignettes (clinical cases or work situations). And the most obvious - Why did you choose this site? Sadly, I didn't get any weird ones. The most unexpected was something to the effect of, "If you had to work with yourself, what would you find to be the most annoying thing about you?" My most bombed question was "Name 3 psychologists who have strongly impacted you and why?," and basically my mind went blank of all psychologists EVER. I thought of just making up names but I couldn't think fast enough. I ended up naming 2 psychologists and one person who is an LCSW I passed off as a psychologist.

What... Content is important but also personality and social skills. Clearly at this point most everyone has content and what separates is personality and this is the reason for social parts of the interview.

Uh... I did a reputable APA accredited internship and I work at a highly respected APA accredited internship as a supervisor.

If you are not engaging and perceptive socially this becomes a Red Flag. Fit is important in content and social and not exclusionary of each other. Social relationships do matter and are important.

Hi! I was told (and have no evidence to support this -- maybe others can speak to this) that there is a difference in applying to child oriented sites vs adult or generalist sites -- with regard to the types of question asked and the focus. I applied to exclusively child sites or child tracks within a larger consortium or academic medical center, and the interview questions were pretty much the same. I ALWAYS got asked two things: why did I want to go to that site and what questions do you have for me. Have a list of questions to ask, especially questions specific to that site. I wrote them down and would refer to them.

Other questions included:
1. Tell me about your dissertation
2. Prior clinical experiences
3. Most difficult case and why
4. What do I do for fun/ self care
5. Long term career goals (where did I see myself in 5/10 years)

I did get 2 case vignettes and one assessment report to interpret. But that was in the minority of sites I interviewed at (but possible).

Hope that helps!

Thanks! Can anyone speak to the kind of questions you are asked at more research oriented site? I'm guessing they might just ask more about your diss/research program ?

only one who needs to give it a rest is you dude. as for high school logic, i would much prefer that to high school bullying, which is what you engage in. and you're not funny, you're just offensive most of the time.

The suggestion to would be interviewees that their ability to "fit in" (whatever that means) at a proverbial ice cream social will trump their professional competency and training needs/fit is completely false, and, yes, seems to be high school logic/metric.

Social skills are important, but its not necessary for someone to be a chatterbox or extroverted if that's not who they are. I think potential interns deserve accurate information.

Thanks! I am applying only to adult sites (heavily VA/AMC consortium sites) but I've heard similar things from the people I've asked IRL. One mentioned feeling an immense amount of pressure to ask very good questions of the sites that they were interviewing at, and since you also mentioned that, I'll be sure to think of some good standard questions and some site-specific ones. Thank you!

-Interview date: Will find out in early December after USAjobs is finished
-Type of cookies you ate today and how many: None yet!

What were the application deadlines on these? I assume the prison related sites generally notify earlier than others.

Thanks! Can anyone speak to the kind of questions you are asked at more research oriented site? I'm guessing they might just ask more about your diss/research program ?

@hamsterpants -- are you applying to child? Adult? Generalist? (If you don't want to specify, that's also fine). Again my experience were with child tracks.

But at research sites, I met with my prospective research matches and sometimes clinical supervisors I would have rotations with. Depending on who the interview was with, the questions were different.

Still had many of the same questions:
1. Why here (for research sites I always mentioned the research projects or foci I was interested in)
2. Dissertation and research projects
3. What I would want to do there - emphasizing how my prior research really complemented theirs and how I could grow as a researcher by matching there
4. My questions to the research mentors were about research (what projects were they working on, what did they anticipate, what research activities would interns engage in going there)

The interviews go by fast. So there wasn't much more to talk about in my interviews :) feel free to PM me if you have specifics about certain research oriented sites.

Thank you!

No problem :) if you have more questions, I'm happy to help!

BOP deadlines were November 1st. They notify early because you have to go through a screening process before you are eligible to interview on site.

Thank you, this is helpful. I'm applying to generalist adult sites/ tracks primarily although some of my research concerns adolescence. I may take you up on your generous pm offer ;)
