Alright joining in. Saw that @purple33 got an NYU acceptance right after I declined, which may be proof of why it's good to do so!

@starfun21 -- Aww, thanks for the note! You are so nice! And yes, thank you for the PSA/reminder; I think it will be important for us all to think about in the upcoming months. I wish you (and everyone else) happy holidays and hope you will all hear the news you want soon 🙂

Thanks so much for the info, @PerznlMed5!! You are killing it this cycle and I'm so glad you're in this awesome spot of needing to return some acceptances, LOL. It was such a pleasure to meet you, and now you know exactly the kind of cheering I am doing for you from afar! :soexcited: Hoping another SDN member gets that Indy acceptance!

@Argle Bargle, huge congratulations on another acceptance!!! You are also a machine. And @neurotroph. Just gahh -- you are all so fantastic!!! Thanks so much for being so conscientious, Argle Bargle. Definitely please never feel pressured to make rushed decisions, but like you mentioned, it is always a good thought to have in the back of your mind if you are absolutely sure that you don't need an acceptance from somewhere! @nmusdposter nailed it with the idea that this year's SDN folks are absolutely the best. I love that everyone is thinking so much about helping each other. Thank YOU all for being such incredible examples of the kind of community I hope to join someday!! 😀

I also love that neurotroph's acceptance may have gone to another SDN member. You never know if it was that specific spot (and @purple33 is just so awesome that I know NYU would have given that acceptance in the coming months if not sooner!) but the timing on that one is just awesome. Love love love how much everyone here is helping each other out this year. Thank you!

Hope everyone had a very Merry Christmas and that you're having a great holiday season!

You are amazing, @fiesta --- congrats again and thank you for the update!! Keep on rocking! Hope one of those is your first choice, or that your first choice is coming soon because you are going many amazing places, my friend 🙂 YAY FIESTA PARTY WOOOOO!

So excited for everyone who has been accepted thus far!! so incredibly awesome 🙂
Adding two of my own: UConn and UChicago

Although I will add that UChicago's was sort of weird because I didn't get an acceptance email but I got an invite to revisit, which prompted me to check the application portal - which then informed me that I had been accepted (so perhaps others should do that as well? Not sure what's going on with that haha...)

CONGRATULATIONS, @merpaderp and @gastro426!!! Thrilled to see both of you posting multiple acceptances 🙂 🙂 🙂 And good reminder to check our portals! Hope this is just the beginning for you and you both get your #1 choice, if you haven't already! But no matter what, we already know you're going to be a physician scientist and have an amazingly successful future -- congrats!!!

Thank you so much, @fiesta!!! You are the best!

vanderbilt! Received the call a few days ago, but kept thinking it was a dream. The portal's updated now, so I stopped pinching myself. Feeling beyond grateful!

AHHHHHHHH congratulations, @am993!!!!!!!!!!!! So so so thrilled for you. I love your attitude about it, too!!! An acceptance truly is an incredible gift, and I'm SO happy it has come your way -- especially at such a phenomenal institution 🙂 Congratulations!!!!

That's a heck of an acceptance, am993! I'm honestly super jealous, but really excited for you as well. The excitement is winning over the jealousy though, since you were at my interview day, and so then you must be a cool person that I like. 😛 (apologies for the grammar)

For those of you that have been accepted, is there a difference in the admission process between 3.7 sci GPA and a 3.8 sci GPA.

gr
There is not much difference once you are selected for interviews, but some top-10 schools might have interview cut-offs at 3.8.

Thank you for responding. I am graduating this may and will be applying next summer to MD/Ph.D. programs and I was kinda of nervous and thinking of pursuing a Post-Bac to increase my sci-GPA to a 3.8. I will just focus on the MCAT.

If my math is right, and using the assumption that you've had ~64 semester credits worth of science classes with an average GPA of 3.7, I think a subsequent 4-credit A would increase your GPA by about 0.018, and each A after that even less. So, you'd have to take about 7 post-bac science courses and get an A in all of them to get your average science GPA above 3.8.

My take on that situation is that there's enough good schools out there that I wouldn't put in that work just for the GPA. It might be good for other reasons, though--like if your science GPA is mainly low because of early college, and you want to show a positive trend. Or because you want to take those classes because they're fun. Or because you think the content would be valuable for you later. But I wouldn't do it for the GPA alone, unless you're at already at a 3.79, the rest of your application suggests that your GPA is lower than what it should be, and there are specific top-10 schools that you really want to go to and you're confident you could get into with a higher GPA.

For 64 credit hours and a 3.7 sGPA, I would need to take 30 credit more hours of science(assuming a 4.0) or 10 more science courses. That is roughly 2 science courses each semester(and one during the summer) for the next two years.
I have not gotten the chance to take many upper-level courses in undergrad. This was due to me changing majors and the AAMC changing the MCAT. So I ended up having to get a BA degree instead of a BS. I think the upper-level courses would help my record and help prepare me for medical/grad school. Plus, as you suggested, I started off with a lower GPA. My Sci-GPA for the last 1.5 years has been over a 3.95.

No more courses, focus upon research and getting a top MCAT score. You should also have ~ 100-150 clinical hours, preferably physician shadowing, and no more. Use that time for studying for the MCAT and/or research.

Thank you. I will work on my MCAT.

Hoping to help a Temple applicant out!

Excellent, @shady_bb!!!! Congratulations on now being a multiple acceptance applicant 😀 😀 😀 So happy for you!!!!!

Hello everyone! Congratulations to all the applicants!

This is my first time being on this network & I have been in awe of the support you all have for each other! I am debating on whether or not I should apply this upcoming cycle or the '17 cycle. I am currently in a research focused Post-Bac.

I just have a question: how holistic did the school look at each of you? For example: did you have a weak area, but great scores & GPA or were you a well-rounded candidate?

Thank you for you time

My own impression--I'm not sure we'd know exactly how holistic the school's evaluation was, since most of that occurs away from our observation. However, during interviews, >95% (even MD-only interviews) ask about research, most ask about clinical experiences in the context of your motivation for medicine, and only a single individual interviewer (out of ~30) has even mentioned GPA/MCAT--and even that was just a comment rather than a question. Most of the interviews seem to be somewhat of an attempt to evaluate you holistically, but that's obviously not fully possible in only ~45 minutes.

Regarding well-roundedness, I'd guess that if your "objective measures" were off the charts and are supported by your recommendations and achievements, then maybe you could play the part of the eccentric/brilliant scientist who doesn't necessarily need to be well-rounded. However, since the rest of us are going to be seeing patients, I think we need to make the case that we're good people who can understand patients' perspectives, and that requires some degree of well roundedness. Not that I think you need to be involved in everything--just that good GPA/MCAT alone aren't enough unless you establish a baseline level of competence/interest in other areas, particularly research.

Are you wondering if you're weak in any particular area? If you give some more details, others might have more specific input. There's also an MD/PhD director on these forums who can almost certainly give better advice than any of us current applicants.

My GPA is pretty crummy for MSTP programs (<3.6), but my MCAT was solid (>36) and I have an unusual background. I've been almost shut out of the top-20, largely due to my GPA + merely sufficient clinical experience, but many very good programs have been willing to overlook my GPA. So holistic review is real.

Yeah I'd second this. My GPA is also under 3.6 and my MCAT was 517, and while I don't have any acceptances yet, I got plenty of interviews so I think places were at least willing to look at me.

I third this, My GPA was right around that range and I had a solid MCAT as well. Like my buddy @MSTPtastic mentioned, it will keep us from getting interviews at certain places known to be what reddit refers to as "numbers ******". Whether it was really just the numbers that kept me out, i don't know because my cv is also not extraordinary. I've gotten a good number of interviews so like @xc_stallion92 mentioned, GPA =/= death in the application game

I think it depends on how stellar your research is. Amazing research experience can make up for a mediocre GPA to an extent. However none of us can really say how much of an influence GPA/MCAT plays since it is very rare for either of those to be brought up in an interview (leading one to believe that they are less important, even if they still factor in during admissions committee meetings). I would guess that once you have an interview, your research/other aspects of your application are more important. However it will be tough to get top interviews without the necessarily stellar GPA/MCAT, since there are a lot of applicants with great grades/scores and similarly great research. That being said, many many adcoms state that if they wanted to, they could fill their classes with 40 MCAT/4.0 GPA students, but none do.

Personally, I have heard both -- that MSTPs are more holistic than MD admissions (with respect to paying more attention to research than scores), and also that they are more number-driven. Who knows!

Maybe @Fencer could provide more insight.

I'll add in to the discussion since I'm kind of on the flip-side of the amazing applicants above. I'm a very high GPA, low MCAT applicant. I will ultimately say that if there's anything you can do about it, DON'T be in my shoes lol. It's a stress pot up in here 🤣! I have gotten the impression throughout this app cycle (and as you might infer from the postings above) that it seems to be much more better to have a higher MCAT score than a very high GPA (assuming that your GPA is still fairly decent -- you may get blacklisted from some top schools with unsaid cutoffs as @smiley buckeye mentions, but most of the time, you will get a good look with a good MCAT).

Unlike @Argle Bargle's experience so far and even what @carpediem22 mentioned, my very discordant MCAT score actually came up in multiple individual interviews at 3 out of the 4 places where I interviewed. To be honest, I'm normally glad when this happens -- it gives me a chance to address it in a very mature, professional manner (perhaps with one exception, in which the question was a very blunt: "What happened here?"). However, my interviewers have typically then mentioned something very strong about my application. Perhaps surprisingly, this is not normally my GPA (although it is very close to 4.0); it's normally about the awards I've won for volunteering, extensive teaching/writing/etc work that I've done, or the 5 campus orgs I'm leading -- the things that I think/hope make me unique and that I'm passionate about!

Unfortunately, I think my ECs would be more helpful if I were applying MD only because from my experience, research and MCAT seem to be the two sole most important factors for MD/PhD applicants. This is not to say that other things will not blacklist you, however. One bad letter of rec (ESPECIALLY from your PI) or a bad personal statement is still bound to tank your application just about everywhere. But I think that a slightly lower GPA or a lack of major ECs generally don't seem to be holding my fellow applicants back, especially when the research is phenomenal 🙂

Buuuut then again, I would highly recommend waiting until if/when I am accepted to take anything that I say anywhere near face value! 😀 What I probably mean to emphasize above all is that although we (and even admissions folks themselves, I imagine) can guess at what historically have been more important factors, you can never really predict how things will work out. Every applicant and application is truly unique, and some schools will find something special in someone where other (and sometimes even higher "ranked" schools) will quickly reject that applicant.

If I am fortunate enough to receive an acceptance, I'll elaborate more on my story and what I've done throughout the app cycle to hopefully help future applicants nervous about weak MCAT or a general stats imbalance. I'm sure hoping it can be done...

More or less, I was just trying to gauge what the programs might be looking for in an applicant. I would say my weakest area would be the MCAT score. I need to significantly increase my score, but I am not sure what the average scores are looking like for the new MCAT.

I am also trying to get a better grasp in eloquently expressing my research in a way that will captivate the reviewers. I am really nervous yet confident that I will get in, but I am still worried out my mind I won't.

Thank you for that input! It's a question that continues to bug me as I start preparing to study for the MCAT. I want to get in so bad, but I am worried that I may not do well on the test. Hopefully, I kill it & be a part of the acceptances in the next cycle!
