2015-2016 SUNY Downstate Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Would anyone like to lend some insight on my current situation?

Admissions told me my app had been reviewed and moved on to the next phase, and she said "I'm not even supposed to tell you that. But you should hear from us pretty soon" Sounds like a pre-II reject right? What do you guys think?

They could be scheduling your interview too...you're not out til you're out!

That kind of sounds like an II to me. Let us know when you find out. Also how did you manage to ask about your application status? Did you just call and ask about that only?

I'll let you guys know, really hope it's an II. And yeah I called and said I wanted to inquire about my app status, then I got transferred to a person who was very vague in their wording.

accepted today! interviewed end of october. got accepted somewhere I like better though, so i'll be giving up my spot. best of luck everyone!!

Silly question, but was it a large or small envelope?

My interview was at the very end of January and I got in. Many of my friends interviewed in February/March and got in. No you are not just interviewing for the waitlist.
Thank You for that!! Really hoping!!

small envelope. I figured it was rejection or wait list before I opened it, but I was pleasantly surprised

Youre giving me hope. Im on my way home from work and I heard there was a small envelope from Downstate waiting for me at home. I was bracing myself for the worst. Still am, but now I have hope.

After todays Mount Sinai fiasco I dont think I can handle bad news. We'll see.

Thanks for the support guys.

ACCEPTED!!!!!!!!!!! I am so relieved and happy. I truly loved downstate so much more than I thought I would, and at this point I would pick it over any other SUNY or other similar medical schools. If anyone wants to chat more about this, feel free to PM me.

Since I was wondering and there was not a lot of info: The envelope is small but thick (unlike other med schools which send you a big envelope with an acceptance folder). My letter was dated Dec 11th, and I interviewed the week of Nov 2nd. So it has been roughly 6 and a half weeks from the date of my interview until I received my letter. Bear in mind there was a thanksgiving week in between. It appears that Downstate sends these out on Fridays, and even though I live relatively nearby the school, it took a full week for the letter to reach my house. I thought my interview was very rough but clearly it turned out better than expected in the end. Don't lose hope folks!

Downstate is a fantastic school.

A bit of an interesting story, not really sure exactly what I should do, but I'm going to be accepting the interview invitation because I really loved the school when I interviewed there back in the 2013-2014 admissions cycle. I requested feedback and they told me my MCAT was not really c0mpetitive for an OOSer. I retook and fixed other parts they mentioned, but still ended up with exactly the same score in all sections. Should I be taking this interview invite with a grain of salt? Especially seeing the low OOS acceptance rate?

I'm so tempted to email telling them I want to go to Downstate...and that I'll do anything to go there....and that I'll be damned if I don't get an II....and that I love Brooklyn....and that Downstate is my #1 choice

No school will send out interview invites unless they had interest in a particular applicant. Do not take it with a grain of salt because you're still 100% in the running. Be prepared to discuss your mcat scores, what you changed on your application, and what you feel you could have improved on. Forget about statistics or "but they normally only have 18% oos students" none of that matters. They have interest in you and you have the ability to knock the interview out of the park. Just take it seriously and give it your best shot.

Wow, I thought I was out of the running after not hearing anything since being complete in early October...but y'all are inspiring!! I hope to get some love soon 😉

Accepted!!!! Interviewed 11/12 & the letter was postmarked 12/15, so the turn around was quick for me! From California, but have been living in NYC for over a year and plan on applying for residency soon. Loved downstate and I think I expressed my love for BK in my interview, which probably helped!! Stoked about this acceptance!

Accepted~! =D Interviewed on 11/5, received acceptance letter on 12/18 via snail mail. Complete on Aug. 5th. I loved downstate, it's in my top 3 choices, and I'm so incredibly happy that I got accepted! Wish all of you the very best with this stressful process, and I hope everything works out for everyone!

Is there any sort of confirmation of them receiving the acceptance form that you mail them?

Interviewed Nov 4. Crickets. Sigh. Almost certainly waitlist... When do waitlist emails get sent?

Yet another lesson that you have no idea how the interview really went.

What days do Downstate has interviews?

I believe they run interviews Monday through Thursday but I can be mistaken

The amount of time you wait for a decision is not correlated to what their decision is. How long it takes them to let you know depends on when your interviewer gets their evaluation of you into the committee. Don't assume wait list just cause it's taking a while, especially considering you've only been waiting 8 weeks, which is nowhere near the longest wait downstate has given for a post interview decision. Try not to fret and just enjoy the start of the new year.

Yea I interviewed Oct 26th...

Is the tour both outdoor and indoor on interview day? Trying to decide whether I should bring a change in shoes to the interview...

You will be going outside to cross to the student center, but it's about a 20 foot walk lol. Most of the tour is inside. You can set up a more involved tour on your own time after your interview, which will involve the res halls and everything, but the one slotted for during your interview day is really minimal

Mostly indoor but you walk across the street to see the student center.

Damn it downstate did you forget about me? It's two months!

I tried digging back a few pages and couldn't find what I was looking for: does the admissions office let you leave luggage and such with them while you go through the interview day? I'll be leaving for the airport right after so I'll be bringing all my bags with me to the interview.
