2015-2016 University of South Dakota (Sanford) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Is it awkward when people inevitably mishear the name of your school and assume you go to Stanford?

rejected due to no ties to the state (CA resident)
good luck everyone

Is it worth applying here as a Minnesota resident?

Starts off with filling out some basic information and then has 8 questions. Here are the first 5, the final 3 are optional "update us about your application" type questions. Hope this helps! Good luck!

*1.Given the mission statement of the school, please explain how your experiences and long term goals would help meet the mission.
*2.Given the diversity statement of the school, explain how your background and experiences with diversity will bring value to the school.
*3.Describe how your experiences in health care or social care activities will help you become a good physician.
*4.Briefly describe a crisis or significant challenge in your life, how you have worked through the crisis or challenge, and what you have learned from this experience.
*5.What are your career plans in the event that you are not admitted to a medical school this year or after several applications?

MN resident here. I did not apply because I read their policies about IS-only and did not have a connection. These are below, taken directly from their website.

  • South Dakota resident or non-resident with strong ties to the state such as:
    • Graduation from a high school in South Dakota
    • A parent living in South Dakota
    • A child of one of our medical school alumni
    • A member of a federally-recognized tribe from a bordering state
    • Completing at least 90 credits at a college or university in South Dakota"

Is there place on the secondary application to indicate the relationship to the state of SD or Sanford school specifically for OOS applicants?

I am a MN applicant with strong ties to the state and school and wondering if there will be space for me to elaborate on this in the application.

Yes, "Please explain your ties to the state of South Dakota or program" is an optional portion of the application

Good to know on the Dec 5th date. Looks like last year they sent out snail mail for their acceptance, any word on whether this is the MO this year?

I've heard that they are sending them out in the mail again.

After this first committe meeting, they will email you either stating that you are pended until the next committee meeting or they will email to verify your mailing address. From what I understand, if you recieve the second email then you will be getting an acceptance letter.

Received my acceptance letter in the mail! Just like @SDKid said, I received an email before my acceptance letter asking me to verify my mailing address.

Did anyone receive an email today about admissions meeting on their application? Mine did not read the same as previously stated in this thread.

I got one saying that my application was placed in the pended pool and will be reconsidered at the final meeting.

Mine said the same thing, that my app was considered and a letter would be sent on Tuesday...no idea what it means. Of course I am panicking, do they send out rejection letters before March?

They will not send rejections until after the final meeting of the year.

I got the same email as you. They could have just told us what that meant or mailed it right away, so nerve-racking!
I guess we will find out soon enough! This whole process is nerve-racking!
