2015 mcat required for 2016 matriculation?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
This is weird because you can take the old MCAT in Jan 2015, which is way too late for 2015 matriculation. So the bulk of Jan test takers will be applying in June 2015 for 2016 matriculation with old MCAT scores.

That is just what I was told by the admissions office at Indiana University Medical School. It seems really weird to me, not to mention disappointing.

Yeah this seems pretty crazy. They definitely will only be accepting the 2015 mcat for the 2016 cycle. Totally making me second guess if I should take the mcat at all this year...

It is correct that IU will not accept the "old" MCAT for 2016 matriculation. Does anybody know of any other schools that will be doing this? This sucks because I took the MCAT May 22 with the intention of taking a gap year...

There's some discussion about this in the Nontrad forum too, with additional schools listed.

I think in situations like a major transition like this AAMC should mandate what schools should accept. I.E. Schools should be told to honor their normal MCAT expiration timelines of 2-4 years or whatever. I'm totally in limbo on this right now and it sucks. I also think a little more warning from schools would be nice. Quite a few places have no mention of anything on their website and AAMC seems think, given their chart, that schools will accept score awhile longer. Be nice if AAMC had a list of this information from schools or required that all schools post when they'll stop accepting old version scores.

Anyway, for those of you posting schools could you note your source? For example spoke with admissions staff or was told by friend of a friend who spoke to admissions staff, or found on website?

anyone else feel like their number of applicants is going to be like less than half the size next year? especially considering a lot of OOS's won't even bother with IU being one of the exceptions?

So... I'm Scheduled to take the MCAT in August. So basically if I do that, there will be at least one school that won't take it, and quite a few won't if I don't get in the first try and have to apply in 2016, and who knows what more will happen as well. Is it too late to reschedule my MCAT To take the 2015 MCAT. I know right now you can't register for the 2015 MCAT, so am I just out all this money? or can I still reschedule?

I had first heard from a friend and then I called IU and was told by the admissions people that they are going to only accept the 2015 for 2016 matriculation.

I had sent an email and received the same reply. Since I was already planning to take it, maybe it will be a silver lining at IU. With their heavy in-state bias maybe there will be fewer applicants next summer.

Just called every medical school in Texas (except UT Southwestern - lady who could answer the question was not available - and TCOM) and they will accept the OLD MCAT up to 5 years from when you take it, regardless of the new MCAT coming out.

Also, they don't foresee any changes in required pre-req courses for the next application cycle (if you're applying Summer 2015).

University of Minnesota will continue current policy, per email from admissions.

"Thank you for contacting the University of Minnesota Medical School. We will continue to accept the MCAT for three years after the test was sat. That means we will be accepting both the new MCAT scores and old MCAT scores simultaneously.

I hope this information is helpful.

Best,

Office of Admissions
U of MN Medical School"
