2016 - 2017 Nontrad M-1 Thread

Done with my last pre-req final!

And while I am happy, let me just rant a bit about didactics. If the point of a series of questions is to see if students understand correlations and regression lines, it isn't the best idea to waste their time on a final by having them graph out 15-20 data points (weird ones like X=9.41, Y=0.32) by hand and then do all the calculations as well. A set of 5 or 6 simple numbers (X=2, Y=3) would have sufficed.

But enough grumpiness! Now is the time for end-of-premed celebratory drinks, with an extra helping of daydreams about moving to Miami. :biglove:
 
Has everyone figured out where they're living yet? Still agonizing over what I can/can't afford. Ahhhh. :arghh:

I definitely have not! I'm at 2.5 weeks until I move out of my place and I am pretty sure my wife and I will be moving without a place to land on the other end. I'm not too worried, though, as it's my understanding that the place I'm going has lots of quick turn around on renting and many places won't show an apartment unless you are ready to move in immediately.

I am so excited about starting medical school, but I am definitely in the morning phase of moving away from a city and people that are amazingly special to me. 🙁

I'm sure it'll all work out! I've actually been having a similar experience. Looked a few places and found landlords who want someone to move in, like, the following day. Haha. Good luck with the move!

We will be living on campus. They have professional student housing 🙂. Cost is slightly higher than living off-campus, but we sold a car now that I can walk to class so it ended up being a wash, money wise.

Not quite yet. Heading down in two weeks to scope some properties (used a realtor), and will go from there. High chance I'll be splitting a place with someone from our very own Non-Trad Coalition (who may or may not chose to identify themselves) 😀

It's Nurses' Week right now and it'll be my last one...same for EMS week coming up soon. It actually makes me a little sad. Nursing/EMS has really become part of my identity; in an isolated, tiny rural area so many people have no idea what my name is, but they recognize my face as we're in line at the gas station, and touch my shoulder, and say "Oh hey, I know you, weren't you my/my mom's/my brother's ex-wife's cousin's nurse?" And that's who I am. It's an honest privilege many times to be remembered for that, for having given solid care to someone even if the outcome wasn't good (which it often isn't, in the ED). And while I know the idea of giving care is the same across doctors and nurses and this isn't a hard left into some other territory, the role of doctor and nurse is very different and part of me will miss the large amount of simple time to connect that I get as a nurse (and on the ambulance, our rides are very long).

Being constantly up close and personal with vulnerabilities in others has changed me, hopefully for the better -- not just in the sense of having gained technical skills, but that it has fundamentally affected how I look at and connect with other human beings. I have no idea how that's going to change now that I'll be looking at it from a different angle, with different stressors and constraints and expectations. I just want to still be a decent person in the end.

East Carolina 🙂 Sat down and did all the math on the potential cost difference, and it was anywhere from 130 - 180k (higher tuition and lost salary). I was sad to let Iowa go, but that is just so much money

Seriously though. All of my projects have been taken away at work now that its come out I'm peacing out. My boss and I are twiddling our thumbs... I am all for free money but I like being productive!
Still waiting on job prospects for the spouse. Tough neck of the woods for their profession :| Not looking forward to potentially moving me and one of my big idiot dogs to Baltimore alone.

@Okazaki Frag Grenade GET A PUPPY (or slightly older dog) We recently adopted a dog from a local rescue organization and it has changed my life and made me so much happier and more active. I also really, really love dogs.

What are people doing to prepare? I am winding down at work and will have a month of #funemployment this summer. An MS2 gave me some anatomy resources from my future school so I can familiarize myself with things. I feel like I'll show up the first day and be like "What are you young kids doing? I can't figure anything out."

Hahaha nothing super exciting/scandalous, I had just revealed some personal details and written a bunch on my school specific thread, so I decided to create this account to start fresh and have a blank slate now that the real deal is starting.

Never got to wear them since my hospital went to "official" scrubs the year I started. But I will. Oh, I will.

So far, I have been playing with my kids. And having delicious IPAs.

After that, I have been making my wife laugh. And enjoying really good whiskey.

Finally, I have been seeing old friends before I move. And having delicious IPA while enjoying really good whiskey.

Totally ready for med schoolz.
 
Fingers crossed for ya, not that you will need it! I'm also jealous, we don't have finals until June 11th

Yes to dogs! We just adopted a 1 year old mix a few weeks ago and she's wonderful, the cutest thing ever. She's very shy of the outdoors, though, so we'll have to work hard to help her feel comfortable enough to take a walk around the neighborhood.

As for plans, we'll spend about a month in Miami with family then head back to the NE and settle in. Only 6 more days of work!!
 
Does anyone feel like second-hand anxiety due to all these "unknown" IA posts that have been popping up? I'm literally like, shoot did anything happen when I was in the dorms six years ago?! Am I forgetting something? Was I secretly written up and have had no clue?

This site breeds anxiety, I swear.

Someone pass some whiskey.

On the topic of dogs: YES! We own a few.... :whistle::whistle::whistle: Highly suggest

I've been having a slew of bizarre dreams lately where something happens and it turns out to be the one thing that makes my school pull my acceptance. Last night it was that I was at dream-work and handed the doctor the wrong size suture needle, and he got pissed off and reported me to my school. WTF, brain.

Dat neurotic tendency doe.

We stay very chill; there's no butthead behavior allowed (which sometimes tends to breed in particular areas of this forum)
 
We are trying to decide how to move. I don't think our stuff is worth enough to rent a moving truck or a pod (we are moving from Utah to Florida). That said, selling everything and then buying everything again seems like a real hassle and could also be expensive. We are thinking about buying a cargo trailer, loading it up, moving and then selling it.

I'm curious what others are planning on doing/did. Any suggestions?

My wife and I went through about 3 or 4 plans before we settled on a final plan. Our move is Boston -> Miami. We have a few pieces of furniture we really like, so we are getting a moving pod for that plus boxes. We are selling all the other furniture. It is more expensive than getting a rental van, but it allows us to drive down in our car together and not have to both drive. We figure the cost of replacing these few, nicer pieces of furniture makes up for some the cost of the moving pod. Plus we are moving without an apartment on the other end, so the box moving allows us to keep things in storage until we have a place to put them.

In the end, we didn't feel like there was a "right" answer, but several that would do and we just picked one that limited some of the hassle.
 
Thankfully we don't have to move, and are instead spending that $$ on some home improvements we had previously put off. Now that we'll be in our place for 4 more years, we can put some money into it. I'm so glad I don't have to deal with moving! (for now at least)
