2016-2017 SUNY - Downstate Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Could any NYC people comment on food to eat around the school? I'm staying at a hotel within 10 minutes of the school and would like some local food suggestions.

I'm OOS and only staying in Brooklyn for 2 days without a car so any must-try foods in the area would be nice! I'm assuming most places also deliver.

I dont think the area the school is in is the best place to try food in Brooklyn.

Park Slope isn't too far and they have some interesting restaurants, as well as downtown BK. However, if you're looking for authentic Caribbean food, the SUNY Downstate area is perfect! Great Jamaican, Haitian, and Trinidadian spots. I actually travel all the way from Manhattan to Brooklyn for this food. It's so good. Especially the spots directly on Flatbush Avenue.

There's some really good food around Prospect Park and it's not that far to get to even walking (or the subway)... I love Kimchi Grill which is korean and mexican fusion (kimchi fries + tacos <3) also if you have some time, go to the Brooklyn Museum and get food around there. It's cool and free after 6 on some days (Thursday I think)

Authentic Caribbean food.??? Ha ha . Nothing authentic about the Caribbean food that they serve. But it's the best you are going to get in USA. I just don't think the restaurant around that area are particularly good .

Everyday I dont get a II from Downstate the more I feel Betrayed by them . We are so perfect together, I fit what you want exactly! these other schools mean nothing... LOVE ME!

Interviewed 9/27 and haven't heard back either so no worries

We should get a 2021 FaceBook page going! Was this anyone's first choice?

How do I convince this school to interview me? Please notice me, Downstate!

They sent me a request for fall grades one month ago... Idk what this means!?!?!?
It's the only school so far that has even slightly indicated that they don't think I'm complete garbage lol

I created a Facebook group for the future Class of 2021. Congratulations to all those accepted. For those waiting to hear back, waiting for an II, or recently rejected from this school, this is definitely not the end of the road for you. It is still extremely early in the application cycle for most schools and it is not by any means uncommon to be interviewed/accepted in March or even April. Timing, unfortunately, isn't everything for this process. Enjoy the journey and try not to be too hard on yourself. You didn't come this far to only come this far!

I was wondering if there are any current med students who would let me pm them with some questions? I would greatly appreciate it!

Hey ! Do you recommend staying in the residence halls? What is the price difference approximately if someone were to stay in an apartment nearby with a roommate compared to the residence halls ?

MS 2. Would also be willing to answer anybody's questions...just maybe not until next friday...

Waitlisted with a LizzyM of 71. Completely devastated that I have to wait until the end of spring and interview at more schools I don't have any intentions of going to. This whole process is such a waste of time.

When did you interview?

Congrats to those accepted! How was your interview experience? Any tips for people interviewing next month?
More importantly, was the free lunch good?

Thanks! The interview was more laid-back than I was expecting. I had prepared for hardball questions, but I wasn't asked any.

The free lunch was nothing to write home about, but I won't look a gift horse in the mouth. 😛 If you have an afternoon interview, I would not show up hungry, though -- one student in our group was pulled from the middle of lunch for their interview! That would make me soooo anxious.

Oh man I would have a heart attack if I couldn't even eat lunch in peace before my interview

My interviewer had a packet of questions that she stuck to for the most past and it seemed tailored to my application. This interview was definitely the least conversational and most academic based of any that I've had, meaning I got the most questions about study strategies, how I prepared for the MCAT, my performance in certain classes, why I did bad in X class, etc., but it was still pretty relaxed.

That's really good to know! My interview at Buffalo was the complete opposite, so this should be interesting.

Does anyone have recommendations for decent hotels near the school? I've got an interview coming up but haven't been able to find any hotel suggestions on the school's website.

I don't know the specifics of res hall pricing, since I was OOS my first year, so I've been renting an apartment so that I could get in-state tuition starting MS2 on. I think nearby apartments might be a little cheaper than the dorms, but I'm not really sure. I know lots of people do really like the dorms for the convenience, though. A bunch lived in the dorms MS1 year because it's easy, and then they found roommates to apartment-hunt with for after that.

Hi! All of the ppl I know who've gotten into Suny Downstate have like 36 MCATs. Do you have any classmates who have like 32 MCATs and aren't minorities? Thank you 🙂
Yes, lots!! P sure our average MCAT is a 32 or so, so absolutely.

i was completed august 12th here and havent heard anything yet... does anyone know why? i have seen some posts from ppl who were completed after me and already have had interview invites...

They didn't love your app.. you still have a chance I'm just saying not everyone gets interviews lol. Even if you have great stats and they are higher than the school's medians
