2016 Nontrad Applicants' Progress Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
First two interviews completed!

I met a few more older students than I had imagined, it was nice.
Hey congrats!!!! That's exciting! But... What do you mean interviews completed? You already interviewed at M.D. schools?

How did you interview so early? congrats! I can't wait to get an II @Cawolf

When will they tell you if you are accepted or not?

Two II! In addition to being nontrad, I'm also a reapplicant and last cycle I only got one II and I didn't get it until January, so I'm rolling around in shock/ecstacy at the moment. Also rolling around in no money. Might not submit these last five secondaries...at least not until I get a couple more paychecks.

Just hang in there! Send those out as soon as you can. It is so worth it!!!

Congrats to all on the interviews!

I'll be finishing up the last stragglers of secondaries I have to fill out today and tomorrow. None of my applications have been completed, however, because my undergrad school has taken 2+ months to put my committee letter together. They say that they expect it to go out next week. I'm a bit bummed because for the majority of the schools I applied to, I was super early and wanted to be in that first batch of applications they read... Oh well, it can't be helped now. I'll have 30-some-odd schools hopefully reading my complete application in the next two weeks.

Joining the non-trad thread!!

I am def non-trad, over 30, VERY circuitous path to medicine. Re-applicant this cycle (I applied late November last cycle). I could not get FAP because I cannot provide my father's financial info. Despite the fact I know my him, we are estranged and he was never part of my life. Anyways, I know where he leaves and I put down his info on the primary, so they told me I needed to provide his taxes. I had to take two new credit cards to pay for all these fees, putting myself in debt. After I finish all these secondaries I will need to get two jobs to recup financially, luckily my "life overhead" is pretty cheap, since I keep it simple and I have no kids. THEY CAN'T STOP US, we are busting down the doors :xf::luck: . Applying over 30 schools this cycle. LET'S GO.

Edit : 14 secondaries submitted, another 20 to go:boom:.... I wish I knew how to write lol......
ONE GEAR, ONE SPEED-GO :zip:

By the way guys,

If you've applied DO be sure you've contacted AAMC and had your official MCAT scores released to AACOMAS.

I am an idiot and didn't catch that fine print, and now I'm getting emails from DO schools wondering where my MCAT scores are. GO ME!

Yesterday, I spent all day writing the secondary for U.A Tucson at a Starbuck till 8 pm. Then I went to to close another file that I had open and accidentally close the one that I was working without saving the changes. So, tried to recover the file without success because the word on Mac is different and I am not computer savvy. So we all have our moments. How about that for an idiot ? +pissed+

@B-wildered Ugh, I'm so sorry to hear that =( I'd recommend using Google Drive. That way all of your work is saved in the cloud so something like this won't happen again. It is also helpful for sending essays to people to edit!

Thanks @wagonwheel23, I usually save my work as word doc and barely have a problem. I also email myself copies of each draft so it is in a sort of cloud. But maybe will try the google drive, I am just used to the word interface. I have several people that help me with my essays, GF, mom (both probably over reading my stuff now) and doctor-friends. Also, I usually send my final draft to Kibin to polish it up and make sure the grammar is ok. However, I still need produce the documents myself. My biggest problem is to keep simple and concise, since I can easily get carried away in details and other thoughts. If you read my posts you can probably figure that much out , since they are usually fragmented and all over the place :wacky:.

At work we have a large shared folder with a LOT (years and years) of data, and I once pressed 'Delete'. Realizing what I had done, and in my moment of terror, I hit the keyboard and managed to confirm my intention to delete all of the data. I was able to press 'cancel' as it was calculating all the data it was going to dump. Needless to say, I'm gunning for surgery with these fine motor skillz keenly demonstrated in a moment of peril.

So I finally finished the secondaries I wanted to get done.

Applied to 33, complete at 27 - withdrew from 2 pre-secondary and 4 didn't send me a secondary yet. So I finished 24 secondaries, as 3 Texas schools had no secondaries.

Exhausted!

Finally finished my secondaries. Applied to 47 (!), but decided not to complete 4 secondaries, and (apparently) did not pass the secondary screen for another 5 schools. Most were likely a waste of my money, but I'd rather try than wonder later what would have happened. Agreed, @Cawolf, this was exhausting. I have nothing but respect for people whose main job is writing. Now to get back to all the things I've been ignoring for the past month...

Congrats for @gyrfalcon and @Cawolf. I am in the same writing program that you guys were, just a little behind. It is stressful.

I filled 15 out 30, and still waiting for a few more secondaries. Nice to know I am not alone. Back to writing

7 of 20 down, 5 more finished but waiting on the lasts letter of rec that should be in on Saturday. Not bad for getting verified Thursday! Hoping to have everything finished a week from today!

did anyone submit without a committee letter and do individual letters instead? if so, did you address this with any of the schools you applied to?

my undergrad offers committee letters to alumni but since i graduated over 8 years ago, i didn't think it would be representative of me. so far no interview invites to any of my numerous schools and i was just wondering if not having a committee letter could have made a huge impact.

My school doesn't have them at all, so I figured I didn't need to talk about it

I didn't address it. Also no IIs. I however doubt that is why in my case.

Well, my app was marked as complete on the 3rd. So now it's just a waiting game, I guess. I wish I hadn't had to wait so long. Now I'm terrified I'll have missed out on all the IIs.

New to this party; SES, lgbtq-urm?, 31mcat, >3.8sgpa >3.7cgpa. Research heavy with unique volunteering. Verified 6/2.
No II's, 2 rejections (GTown, UW)
Not feeling any love, yet. 🙁

You haven't missed out on anything. Schools will be handing out IIs clear into next year. Just get those secondaries out ASAP and try to breathe 🙂

Still super early in the game. I believe that the great bulk of II starts to go out set-oct.

Actually, I wrote that wrong even. My application was "Ready for review" on the 3rd. So it won't be send to schools until the end of this month, most likely. Still, I have gotten four secondaries. They must be schools that give them to everyone.

Thats seriously impressive. I haven't even had one secondary reviewed yet 🙁

Is anyone here applying for Oregon Health and Science School of Medicine ? The secondary questions are so weird IMHO. :yuck::barefoot:

Mcat scores released on the 21st, completed at most schools before the end of july. Silence on all fronts. Hoping to hear something soon and that i get an ii before my first inevitable rejection. Congrats to all those with IIs streaming in. Just a wee bit jealous!
