Did not see a thread about the scramble so starting one.

I am going into psych and ranked only one program, but was not matched today. Initially, I was planning to wait for the NRMP match in March as I had more ACGME interviews. However, since I did not take the Steps (just took COMLEX), I am making the last minute decision to try to scramble today.

Good luck to anyone else out there trying to scramble into a program this week!
It is going to be a tough week, possibly much longer, but hang in there.

Share your situation/ updates here to keep each other motivated and informed.
Hang in there, we will be ok.

One of my best friends was in the same situation as you last year. He managed to scramble into one of the very few psych spots left in the DO scramble.
Best of luck!

Unfortunately, the scramble is going away for those of us graduating 2020+ 🙁

Good luck to you all!

Thanks everyone,

Psychiatry spots went away in the first day 🙁
I decided to call a few FM programs and got offers for the ones that offered me an interview. I still haven't decided what to do yet. Just updating for anyone who wants to know. Please message me if you want more details on how this week went for me.

Good luck!

Why aren't you applying ACGME?

Then forgo the FM programs and wait for your ACGME result. If you still don't match, then do SOAP.

To be completely honest, if you really want Psych, I'd wait for the ACGME match and at least try. As others have mentioned, if you don't match, you can try to SOAP Psych or FM and then, even if you get through the 3 rounds of SOAP with no offers, you should be able to scramble into either an AOA FM spot or even worse a TRI and just reapply the next year.

I personally would risk it, because you could potentially (again in the worst case) scramble into a TRI at a site that has an in house Psych program. Even if you don't you'll be somewhere most likely with a TRI and an FM residency which you might be able to feed into.

I've never understood why scrambling into an FM program would be better than a TRI. If you still want to do psych wouldn't it be best to scramble into a TRI and try again next year? If you scramble into an FM program and find a psych spot next year, you'd have to leave the FM program to join that psych program. I've read on here that leaving one program for another can be a tricky process and really piss some people off.

An FM spot is categorical, while a TRI is just an internship. Sure it's possible they could reapply for Psych next year, but applying as a TRI/FM/graduate actually makes your app weaker than applying as a student. Given that not much else will have changed between their current app and next year's it's likely they'll have the same result, and then they'd be in a worse situation of having to find a categorical program after having done an internship.

In other words, a TRI is a dead end if you fail to do better next year. That said, whether or not a TRI is better than an FM spot will vary based on a lot of factors. OP applied to both psych and family, so it really depends how much they like either. If they hate family and just applied to have a backup, yeah maybe they should try another cycle of applying Psych. If they like Psych slightly more than family, maybe they'd be better off with a categorical family spot.

Maybe they only applied to a handful of psych programs, and if they applied more broadly results would be different. Or maybe they applied to every Psych program in the country, got only a few interviews, and they have some major red flags, in which case a categorical FM spot is a much safer bet. I have no idea what OP's situation is, but depending on that then a TRI may be better or an FM spot may be better.

Again though, I think OP should wait for the NRMP match, especially if they interviewed at more programs in that match.

Wait for ACGME psych. FM will always be there. What did you end up doing?

I'm in the NRMP SOAP. Can I call an AOA program or no? I've asked this question a few places but no answers.

I am currently an MD failed to match in the NRMP this year. I was wondering if I can apply to program without the program being dually accredited

So sorry to hear that, and I wish you the best of luck in the MD scramble. You cannot apply to DO programs because you are not a DO.

thanks for replying. I talk to a couple of ppl who went through the MD scramble. They said there is nothing out there cause programs usually fill them during SOAP. But I was just wondering why can't I apply to a DO program while you guys can apply to an MD program.

Don't listen to anyone, you should still apply to the MD scramble/SOAP before Friday, if you still can! Your goal is to match and I wish you much luck.

As for DO programs, that is a separate DO match for DO students, it is sponsored by the AOA (for DO schools/hospitals) not ACGME. To put it simply, DOs learn OMM and DO residency programs have a mandatory OMM educational component in their curriculum, which as an MD, you did not train with. DOs can apply to MD programs because they have learned the same material and have undergone the same clinical rotations as MDs, with the addition of OMM, so they bring extra skills to MD programs if they choose to practice the OMM.
In 2020 there will be one Match and SOAP, but until then, DO residencies can only take DO students, through the DO Match or DO SOAP. In 2020 all programs will be ACGME sponsored and there will be no AOA.

This is one of the reasons the merger is happening.

I already applied to all the SOAP programs I can. The only calls I got was from a cruise line and the only email I got was from some guy trying to enlarge my p***s.

thanks for replying. I thought about going to DO school but Caribbean med school accepted me first. Matching is getting rougher and rougher. I was hoping there was some sort of backdoor i could become a doctor.

I'm really sorry to hear that. I wish you much luck next year. See if anyone in the NRMP or Scramble/SOAP forums that successfully matched/scrambled into your desired field may offer you some solid advice. Try to email some PDs or even some PDs you got letters from, and frankly ask their honest advice on how you may improve your application. Don't give up. Good luck to you.

If you're still looking for a spot the AOA post match website still list:
3 anesthesiology spots
2 hospitals with a combined 4 spots for NMS Med OMT
6 hospitals with a combined 20 spots for IM
29 Hospitals with a combined 58 spots for FM
11 hospitals with s combined 89 spots for Tri

Good luck!!!
