Anyone with recommendations on how to go about accepting/scheduling interviews?
I'm getting all of these gen surg invites and only 2 vascular invites at the moment. I suspect more vascular invites will come after Oct 1st but I have been accepting these gen surg invites as a precaution. I was originally planning to drop any gen surg if it conflicted with a vascular interview (or maybe reschedule if I have that luxury).

Just not sure how to balance safety without overcomitting.

Do you guys know if the invites only come out in one wave?
Not necessarily. I've heard from a friend who matched last year that many places will send out a second round once people cancel interviews. Also, there have been a few instances this year where other applicants and I have gotten interview invites ranging from hours to days apart.

Here's some info for y'all based on my residency program interview experiences. I'm gonna be short and sweet because I'm in the middle of training and super busy.

Dartmouth: Great program. Incredible faculty from research and operating perspective. The culture here is good, volume is okay, research opportunities are endless, 6 year program, have to live in the middle of no where. Very respected institution when it comes to Vascular Surgery. Considered one of the best training programs in the nation.

Mass Gen: I'd personally avoid this place. I interviewed here, but my friends who did sub-i's have commented on how malignant this place is. Attendings are mean and residents are stand-offish. Heard the volume was very low, especially after their last chief left (or got fired I heard) and took his patients somewhere else. Volume will probably pick up. Strong in research though.

Beth Israel: The better Harvard program as far as culture is concerned. Volume is okay. Research is strong here. 7 year program. Accept 1 resident per year. They have 1 chief from Dartmouth who is big on research and their program director is a great educator and surgeon, and lots of junior faculty.

Umass: I believe this is a 6 or 7 year program. Their chief is very well known and does lots of IDE clinical trial stuff with fenestrated evars. Culture is fun. Couldn't really comment on the volume there. Accept 2 residents per year.

Pitt: Crazy good program. 7 years. Culture is good. Lots of comraderie among residents and surgeons. Very high volume. Has 11 affiliated hospitals from what I remember. Accepts 2 residents per year. Considered one of the best programs in the nation.

Alabama: Enjoyed my interview here surprisingly. Nobody knows about this program, but probably the highest volume in the nation. People in the southeast are just sick! Chief is an amazing guy from Dartmouth. Does lots of research. 6 year program.

University of Washington: Known for most vascular trauma and the most ruptures. They cover some really large region up there in the northwest. Their chief is popular and does modified feneatrated endografts, but they also have another IDE where they do branched TEVARs. I don't think any other program has 2 IDE's. Lots of research opportunity. Culture seemed legit. Considered one of the best programs in the country.

Stanford: Not popular among rotating sub-i's, but I really enjoyed my interview experience. All the faculty seemed nice. Their volume however seemed low. They send their residents to canada for 3 months to get open surgery experience. Great research opportunities here. Big on endovascular surgery at this institution. Best place for biodesign.

UCLA: Beautiful campus, amazing faculty, great culture. Volume not that great from what I've heard. Do not have hybrid room which I'm not sure how much that matters, but people make a big deal about this. Big on research. Again...beautiful campus and facilities.

USC: 6 year program. Strong on research, and also appeared to have good volume. Culture appeared to be fine, residents seemed like they were having a good time. Have a neat cadaver program where dead bodies come in and are simulated in surgical cases. Lots of trauma in this area of LA.

Michigan: Incredible 7 year program. Faculty are outstanding, great comraderie, strong research, most pediatric vascular surgery volume in nation, overall volume good. Considered one of the best programs in the nation. Check this place out for sure. Only drawback is living in Ann Arbor imo...

Wisconsin: Surprisingly an incredible program. 5 years. Great culture. Strong on research. High volume (though all fat white dudes). The residents were really fun and the comraderie here was apparently strong. Highly suggest checking this one out!

Methodist: Very strong program, though heard from several people it could be malignant. Beautiful facilities. Volume is high here, though I don't know if there is much competition with the baylor and UT houston programs nearby. I presume not since it's Texas.

Mayo: 5 years, very busy though zero trauma cases since it's a referral center. Bread and butter cases may be limited, but will see complex cases which may or may not be good depending on where you wanna go work after and depending on the type of vascular surgeon you wanna be. Kinda got an odd impression from the residents. Oderich is their PD and bower is their chief, two big names in vascular surgery, though I'm not sure how much longer they'll be staying there. Rochester Minnesota also is a very secluded place to live with not much to do imo.

If you have other program-specific questions, feel free to ask and I'm sure I can get some info for ya if I'm not busy. Good luck everybody.

Thank you so much for this. Any info about some of the programs that have sent out invites already?

Hey all, I wanted to make a Google sheets like the General Surgery one. Not sure if there was one already floating around but thought this might be a little more comprehensive. Please share and update.

This is a great idea. Is there any other way for us to share the link?

I asked my friend to post it on the reddit thread with all the other specialties, hopefully it’ll be up there tomorrow. Another site I don’t use enough to post

Can anyone speak to the relative strength/merits of WV vs. Rochester? At the moment it seems like I may have to choose between one or the other for an interview. Thanks.

How important is the pre-interview dinner? I have an interview the same morning and have to fly to make it to the next one. If it’s a bad look should I consider skipping it altogether?
