2018 APPIC Internship Phase II - onward and upward!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
How are you feeling??? I'm going through cycles of sadness/crying, disbelief, then total zen, and repeat
I'm so sorry! Hugs! When I got my last rejection, I LITERALLY THOUGHT THE WORLD WOULD STOP SPINNING AND MY HEART WOULD STOP BEATING. So yeah, some mild catastrophizing took place haha. But now, especially with the new year, I feel relaxed and ... normal. I actually had no interviews so I have had a lot of time to come to terms with my Phase 2 membership lol. So, TIME was the biggest factor. I really feel bad for those who got interviews and did not match because they have to deal with a huge influx of negative emotion, while simultaneously scrambling to attack Phase 2.

Aaaanyways, whoohoooo Phase 2, we GOT this!! And if not, life will undoubtedly go on regardless.

Question for my fellow phase II friends... If a site you interviewed at and ranked first still has 2 spots available in phase II, does this mean they didn't rank you at all? Trying to see how worth it it would be to apply again. Don't really want to give them the satisfaction of putting in another application if they didn't rank me last time.

That is correct. If a site has open spots (for the track you applied) and you ranked them. You were not on their final rank list.

Hi all,

Since our application hours are locked, how should we go about "updating" them? Should this be mentioned in the cover letter or just wait for the internship director to ask us? I am wondering, as I think I may meet for "minimum requirements" now than back in November.

Good luck to everyone participating in phase II!

Good luck to everyone participating in Phase II! There are a lot of great sites with spots open, so I'm hopeful for everyone applying in the second round!

As wisNeuro said, yes, this likely means the person in question wasn't ranked. And yes, I would say it's worthwhile to apply again, unless there was a significantly negative impression made one way or the other. There can be reasons why a person may have initially been left off a rank list that would not interfere with the site deciding to rank them in phase II. And sites, just like applicants, can change their minds.

It can happen that slots are opened for Match II that were funded since the ranking deadline and therefore appear in Match II. You could contact the TD to say that you see they have positions available but are assuming that you were not ranked after interviews. However, if these are new positions and your application would be considered to please let you know. It takes some guts but you do not have anything to lose by asking....

If you withdrew prior to Phase I, but interviewed with sites before that, would you notify the sites during Phase II that you're applying to them AGAIN, but withdrew instead of not ranking them for Phase I?

i would think depends why you withdrew - if it's something that's not like bad to reveal then i would think it could/should be worked into a cover letter

It can't hurt to reach out to the TD, explain the situation and ask if they would consider your application. Worst case scenario, they say no and you've saved time (and money?) on not reapplying.

Hey all,

Just offering some support. No matter how crappy this process is you are all superstars and have a good shot at matching phase 2. There are some great sites with open spots. That being said, if any of you guys are looking to apply to NY or NJ sites and want some insight into some of the sites with open slots (Greystone Park in NJ, Jacobi medical center NY, Beth Israel NY, King’s County Hospital, Andrus Children’s Center)

I interviewed and know people who have been in internships/externships there. Feel free to PM me for information if you need it since i know sites don’t take as much care in answering all questions and getting you hooked up with intern talk time in phase 2.

@Sherlocked221 posted on the other thread about the Phase II thread and I just wanted to share some support!

Update your CV hours and if it was a significant increase, notw it within your cover letters.

Hello All,

I mostly applied to UCCs and VAs. Fortunate to match in phase I, however if anyone would like materials looked at or have questions about available UCCs or VAs can send me a message. I will never forget a student in my program did not match in phase I last year and their entire cohort rallied around that person and provided so much support and feedback. I was very impressed by this and would like to pass on that type of spirit and support in any way possible. Best of luck to everyone these next few weeks!

Also wanted to send my encouragement and support to everyone entering Phase 2. It looks like there are a ton of AWESOME sites available!

Also, if anyone is a Rorschach nerd, like me, I know Phil Erdberg does R-PAS training for students at the Vacaville site, which has multiple positions available.

Good luck, everyone!

Wishing only the best for all of y'all who are about to slay the Phase II game! I interviewed at Children's Mercy for the child-clinical track (which is the opening they have) and if anyone would like some details/impressions, feel free to message me!! 🙂

Hi guys!

I interviewed at the UC Davis Medical Center-CAARE Center in the CAARE center track, in
which there are three slots available. It is a really cool internship for those interested in working with childhood trauma. PM me if you want any info!

Hi all,

I interviewed at the Detroit VA (John Dingell) for neuro, and I thought they were great! I noticed they have two open slots (and one health slot I believe). I'd be happy to share info, especially if anyone is looking for a neuro internship!

I plan on applying for their health position. Can you DM me more info? They look great!

two questions
- does anybody have a link to the match updates we are supposed to be checking? i remember one was sent out but cant find it
- there's nothing special we need to do to register for phase 2 or some drastically different APPI procedure i'm missing (other than not sending out supplementals until asked by email) right?

1. APPIC > Match > APPIC Match Phase II > Phase II News
2. Not that I know of!

I wouldn't be so definite about this. Some sites put a cap on how many students they take from one program, so they'd go unmatched even if they ranked you if they hit their max amount from one program.

Touche, this does happen. We did this at the site that I did postdoc at. So, there are some exceptions. Although, if no one in your program matched to that site, you can be somewhat confident that you were not ranked, unless they opened up additional slots post Match I for some rare reason.

Hi friends - hope everyone is keepin on keepin on - can't imagine how tough this process must be... we're thinking of you and wishing you all the best! ...that, and a speedy end to the craziness of this WHOLE d*mn thing 😉

Remember, YOU CAN DO ITTTT!

Also wanted to offer any feedback or support for sites I interviewed at that people may be considering -
*Central Texas VA (I had a phone interview)
*Memphis VA
*Southwest Consortium / New Mexico VA
*UF Health Sciences, Health Psych track

Happy to chat more about my experiences and impressions if that would be helpful!

There are two sites in Phase II I applied to in Phase I (1 interview, 1 not). APPIC suggests reapplying.

If doing so, how should one address the previous rejection in the new cover letter?

Rather than addressing the previous rejection, find ways to tailor your cover letter to emphasize your fit with the program. This could be highlighting your clinical strengths in certain areas or addressing training opportunities you want from that site and why. You probably have already done this for phase 1, so have your cohort or others review and provide feedback. Every time I thought I was done with a cover letter, someone would provide a change of words or suggest changes that strengthened the letter even more.

Omg I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity of Dr. Erdberg at a number of didactics. He is very nice. I’ve been out of the R-PAS scoring system for awhile, but he is really great and last I heard is open to working with students!

I’m surprised Vacaville has so many positions open.

I interviewed at Monterey County and Utah State. Feel free to pm me with questions. Good luck all!

I’d love some info on UF if you could DM me!

Like @OliveFrank, I interviewed at the UCD CAARE Center (for a slightly different track, but there was a good amount of overlap - I also used to volunteer with them, a number of years ago). I am also very familiar with Davis/Sacramento, if anyone is interested.

Also just wanted to jump by and wish everyone so much luck and fortitude!

well. i submitted my applications and moments later jumped to answer a sales call.
it begins again

Did you receive any confirmation email this time after submitting the designations?

So all the stress has turned my brain into pudding and I managed to submit some applications with a typo in the cover letter. (the wrong site name in the portion i copy pasted.) How much is this going to screw up my chances of receiving an interview?
I feel like an idiot

Gosh, that’s tough. A totally reasonable turn of events, but it may have a real consequence 🙁 I’ve heard from friends on selection committees that this is understandably not their favorite thing... but I also hope people might be more forgiving when you have just a 6 day turn around time. And of course *everyone* uses templates for their letters—you didn’t do anything wrong! It’s such an unnerving realization - but it will be ok. Because, at worst, if this is a committee who isn’t sympathetic to the stress (AKA mass hysteria) of Phase 2, perhaps you don’t want to be there anyway ::fingers crossed:: Good luck!!

I know someone who did this in Phase I and still got an interview at the site. At this point, programs want to fill their spots too—if they are interested in you, I doubt something small like this will have that big of an impact.

Anyone else hoping that Greg or someone sends an email just confirming that the deadline passed (even though I KNOW it did)?
Got a confirmation email for a site having received my app
On one hand almost gave me a heart attack
On the other - least we know they went through

Hi fellow phase ii folks. I know some have heard back from Greystone Park and Boston VA today. I wasn’t sure where to post this, but thought I’d share.

I also received a confirmation and held my breath then was relieved that all my materials were received! Also I heard from a cohort mate that the Jackson Mississippi VA are sending out invites at the moment. Anyone else hear anything today?
