Where can we find the stats?

I see that Aunt minnie says that all IR DR spots filled and that 100% of PGY1 spots filled, but does anyone have the stats for the PGY2 spots (don't PGY2 spots make up the majority)?

According to the radiology spreadsheet floating around, there were 5 PGY1 and 5PGY2 and 0 IR/DR spots that were open for the SOAP. I assume they all filled after the SOAP.

Anyways, congratz to everyone that matched. I'm excited to meet my incoming coresidents!

Match data is available on NRMP website. In short, radiology competitiveness is up compared to a couple years ago. IR is now the most competitive medical specialty.

According to nrmp data (http://www.nrmp.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/Advance-Data-Tables-2018.pdf), there were:

0 PGY1 spots unfilled
4 PGY2 spots unfilled

This is not counting physician (R) positions, which are different. There were 5 unfilled R spots.

Yes, by the NRMP's chosen metrics (% filled overall, and % filled by US seniors), IR is now the most competitive specialty with 0 unfilled spots and the highest % of spots filled by US seniors out of any specialty at 95.5%, followed closely by ortho at 93.1% and plastics at 92.9%.

Does it seem like DR competitiveness is increasing or remaining stagnant? I am afraid by the time I apply it is going to be über competitive like IR is.

The job market is very good now, for both DR and IR. Many groups that could find a well qualified applicant a few years ago in a drop of hat, now have hard time hiring an average applicant. Obviously, big coastal cities are always desirable and are harder to get a job for all medical specialties.

To add another wrinkle into the system. How about couples match for DR, how does that usually end up for each applicant? Do both couples usually match or does one have to forgo their desired specialty if both applying competitive?

By all metrics, DR competitiveness has been increasing every year since the low point that was 2015. Even with IR now skimming the top.

I keep hearing that there were 1 spot or 5 spots or 10 spots that did not fill this year.

Does anyone know which of the Radiology programs did not fill?
Or will we have to wait until the NRMP report in September to find out?

Looking at the 2018 NRMP data tables doesn't DR have a 70% match rate for US seniors? Isn't that terribly low and thus very competitive? Is it somewhat inaccurate because people applying IR are also applying DR (but matching to IR and thus not matching to DR)?

Yes it has gotten very competitive because even if you subtract the 125 dual applicants who matched into IR, there are 1000-630-125 US seniors who didn't match into DR. Maybe those people also dual applied to ortho, plastics, etc. but this definitely shows that DR has gotten very competitive this year.

Eh, apparently there are a large number of IMGs and FMGs who are matching into Rads these days. Match percentages don't tell the entire story; we should wait until the Charting Outcomes gives us the applicant breakdown.

I hope you are true. Problem is this percentage include only USMDs. If you start including US-DOs, Canadians USMDs applying second time then it will be way high percentage.

I'm not entirely certain what you meant in your post.

If Rads is truly becoming more competitive, it should be filling with US MD students - specifically, those with good-to-great Step scores.

If you look at PGY-2 positions, DR had 72% and IR had 95% US senior fill rate. Just to put things in perspective, Derm had a 82% US senior fill rate. Considering radiology has nearly 1000 PGY2 positions with many of these being podunk community programs(as compared to Derm) bringing the overall stats down, you can imagine academic and top programs can be very difficult to match into.

Though US senior fill rate is one metric we can use, I do think the 2018 charting outcomes will give us a much better idea of the competitiveness of DR and IR/DR.
