Send letters of intent... Between 5/5 and 5/7 overnight sync (2 days), there were 13 applicants ( from 798 to 811) with their first MD/PhD acceptance!

I already sent a letter of intent to my preferred program previously. Should I be patient or reaffirm the program?

Just received notice from the last of my waitlists for MD/PhD programs. I ended up converting none of these waitlists to an acceptance. Good luck to everyone.

As predicted, a lot of movement happening last week, but it slowed down almost to snail pace this week. On Monday 5/10 early morning (after sync), we had 815 applicants with at least one acceptance. On Thursday 5/13, we only advanced to 823 applicants with at least one MD/PhD AC. Actions on Monday added 2, on Tuesday 1, but on Wednesday, we had 5 first new MD/PhD ACs reported into the national system. I will place numbers on Saturday morning, after Friday actions.

Addendum:
Thursday, we only had one more, and Friday 2 more. As of Saturday, we have 826 applicants with at least 1 MD/PhD AC.

Sorry to bump this thread with a question about the 2021-2022 cycle, but I don't see a thread on that yet. What's the general consensus on how to write the work/activity for labs as I discuss my projects/responsibilities in greater detail in the sig. research essay? Just give a condensed and concise description of the same things? And a follow-up question, if we are using the lab experiences as most meaningful, should I just be describing another aspect that wasn't touched on in the other essays?

Not yet... The full results of the 2021 application cycle are released around October. This is from my MSTP T32 grant renewal regarding the 2020 application cycle (TGE means NIH Training Grant Eligible - code for US citizens and permanent residents):

"The 2020 application cycle resulted in 89 of the 202 TGE applicants matriculating into MD/PhD programs across the US. This is a rate of 44.1% (89/202) for MD/PhD matriculation of ***my program's*** applicants, which is ~ 10% higher than the published national success rate of 39.9% for TGE matriculants in MD/PhD programs as calculated from the 2020 AAMC Tables B-7 and B-9; 679 TGE matriculated into MD/PhD programs out of a national pool of 1700 TGE applicants. In addition, 45 of our TGE MD/PhD applicants in 2020 matriculated into a Medical School program, leading to a combined 66.3% success rate for matriculation into a MD or MD/PhD program for our 2020 MD/PhD applicants."

As compared to my 66.3% matriculation rate (MD and MD/PhD) for my MSTP's 2020 applicants, the overall pool of MD applicants only had 41.7% matriculation rate (22038/52850) - this number is inclusive of all MD matriculants including MD/PhD matriculants. This is also not just TGE applicants but all 2020 applicants.

Interesting, thank you for sharing. While a small subset of the overall pool, it is still surprising to learn that nearly a fourth of all of the MSTP applicants are matriculating MD only. Any InCyte or hahahaha Zoo sistah why that might be?

I know my applicants and their final destinations... However, they are a small representation of the entire pool of applicants with the inherent biases of my own recruitment patterns (including SDN, NIH, and other venues).

My own applicants:

• Some take a prestigious MD (Harvard, Stanford, etc) over MSTP AC with the promise of applying when inside or just a MD from prestige.
• Some take a MD w financial aid as they didn't anticipate the generous scholarship/aid package.
• Some take a MD because it is the only school that took them (particularly, those with stats below national MD/PhD benchmarks).
• A few have a change of heart as the interviews make them reflect into their career path.

Do these applicants apply both MD and MSTP or are there that many programs who review simultaneously/defer to MD only?

Most of these applicants will apply to MD/PhD programs across the nation and a few regional/state schools close to them for MD-only. Many schools defer to the regular pool of applicants, unfortunately, that is until late in the cycle.

If merging activities (e.g. more than 3 into one slot), what info needs to be listed in the activity description? Right now, hours/contact info for each individual activity are taking up most of the space in the activities description, but I would rather use it to reflect etc. Thanks!

I do not have an answer for you, but this is a thread discussing the previous cycle. More current applicants will probably monitor the new thread created by Fencer some time ago.
