Just made this meme--hot off the press. Like this post if you can relate, ignore if you like last minute decisions

Anyone have any idea why schools like Georgetown, which should have a great WL movement, have been so quiet?? Like they let off a few people off the WL in march and that's it lol.

Hey everyone. This story is not really related to waitlists but I'm just frustrated and want to share.

So basically, I had a file review at one of my state schools (side note: I got an interview and WL at the best and most competitive public med school in my state but the med school that was a distant second didn't even interview me) and the adcom told me that my personal statement was given 0 points out of 10. He also told me that I was basically in the third highest priority list for interviews (that normally should get interviews) but that this year, they were unable to grant everyone interviews on the 3rd list and as a result, just had to reject a bunch of people. Finally, the kicker is that after our file review, the adcom literally emailed me and said "hey I read your PS and it's actually pretty good. no idea why you got 0/10".

So yeah

unbelievable.... their attitude is like "oops no idea what happened, that's too bad!" like do they even realize how much impact their job has on people's lives..

I wonder what mistake happened in the review process. 0 out of 10 is EXTREME, something clearly went wrong somewhere, especially seeing that the adcom said that your PS was good. I'm sorry that happened to you, it sucks.

I had 7 II and Im on 6 WLs and honestly feeling pretty demoralized about this whole thing. I met with a med school prof who also does admissions and basically told me my app was good and only to tweak a few things, which was good to hear but also like obviously what I've been doing hasnt been working lol. Anybody else on 5+ WLs?
Currently sitting on 8 WL :/

Yeah, it just made me realize how little med schools care, especially since they expect so much from you. As far as the PS is concerned, I shopped it around to multiple med students, people on SDN, etc. and they all said it was pretty good. I can't help but feel like I got someone who was a little cranky that day and was just unlucky. According to that adcom, if I had just gotten 3 out of 10 points, I would've been in the second tier of applicants, which always get interviews.

The worst part is that come next cycle (I'm on 5 WL), I'll once again be begging this school to let me in and I'll have to act like I love the school.

Jeez. Just highlights the hypocrisy of the process we find ourselves in. The medical schools want us to be perfect angels, and rightfully so, yet they don't really seem to be holding up their end of the bargain. The process is highly unpredictable, and I feel for the fact that you can't really get solid guidance on your personal statement from those conflicting opinions. Something similar happened to me during my first app. School X told me all I needed to work on was my MCAT, which I nailed during my retake, and school Y told me I needed to redo a bunch of things on my app. I ultimately decided to basically revamp my entire application and work on a bunch of flaws I saw with it, again doing much better on the MCAT the second time in addition. The result? School X has waitlisted me, and the other rejected me. Ultimately, I can empathize with the fact that you're frustrated with schools, I think we all are tbh. But you are in good company and we are here for each other.

It seems that Georgetown took at least a week after the April 30th deadline to start pulling people off of the WL the past few years. I'm thinking this might be because Georgetown's waitlist is unranked, so maybe they have to go back and review each WL applicant before making decisions? Not entirely sure, but I am right there with you waiting for any movement! Wishing you the best of luck!!!

I’m in the top 10 of my school’s HPWL. Last couple years calls started the Friday after April 30. Why is this the case when the list is also ranked??

This is why it irks me when people are like "if you deserved to get in you would've gotten in." Crap like this happens behind the scenes and sometimes it really is just bad luck.
+ 1---It can be as simple as getting off the waitlist because they needed to replace a candidate with similar stats/demographics 🙁 So tired of this **** it is dehumanizing honestly.

Is it too early to ask the school that you are waitlisted at for feedback? Does doing so jeopardize the chance to getting A from the school?

I haven't done my actual job at work in weeks just been refreshing sdn. Been reading threads at schools I haven't even applied to. Been reading the X vs Y school threads just to feel something. Spiraling. Keep telling myself getting that first A will just be so much more sweeter after this looooong wait. But now just burnt out

Last week I got an email from GW that said I’d “likely be accepted” off the WL. Several others who got that email were all accepted, but I wasn’t. Now I’ve convinced myself they overestimated spots and I’m the one who’s not going to get in. Being a pessimist is exhausting 😂

Consider yourself lucky from someone who did not get the email who is also on the waitlist! I am sure there will be more waitlist movement and you are definitely at the top of it!! It is very unlikely that there won't be any more movement from now to the first day of class.

GW is my absolute top choice and I really wish I received the email (which i didnt). GW just started moving their WL so they def have more movements coming.

Thank you both! You’re a lot more positive than I am. Let’s hope they have plenty of movement and we can all hear back!

Soo when is it ethical to start sending LOIs to other schools when it seems like you’re being ghosted by your top choice 🥶

THIS^^^^^^!!!!!!.

The bottom line is, this is the dirty underside of "holistic reviews." Going strictly by stats would disenfranchise many deserving people. The resulting more subjective reviews also disenfranchise many deserving people.

There is no such thing as "deserve" in a process in which 60,000 people, the overwhelming majority of whom are objectively "deserving," are jockeying for 22,000 spots. Anyone who thinks otherwise is quite frankly just ill informed. No reason to allow yourself to be irked. You know better.
