2020-2021 Waitlist Support Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I’m in the top 10 of my school’s HPWL. Last couple years calls started the Friday after April 30. Why is this the case when the list is also ranked??
HPWL does not mean ranked. Ranked means ranked. Calls could start "late" for any number of reasons, including them just taking their time figuring things out after the dust settles on 5/1.

Is it too early to ask the school that you are waitlisted at for feedback? Does doing so jeopardize the chance to getting A from the school?
Yes. It is too early. No school will give you feedback while your application still pending.

Day 2 of absolute silence (no movement at all)...zzzZZZZzzzxxXzzxZzzz do u guys think it’s too early to think that no movement = no available spots so far?
Yes. 2 days =/= 2 weeks. No movement means no movement. It might mean no spots, and it might mean a slow, disorganized adcom. Absolutely no way to know, so nothing to be gained by stressing about it.

Is it too late to send an LOI now?? Dean told me I’m in the top 10 I assumed I’m ranked but that’s true that doesn’t mean I am.

@KnightDoc when is it not early for WL movement anymore and when does it become late?

I have no idea if the same will happen this year, but I was taking a look at 2018's waitlist tracker, and it seems that movement was pretty solid throughout May. I imagine a decent amount happened early June too (since people do stop submitting stuff as time goes on).

No hard and fast rule. I go by prior years' movement since 2019, when the system changed to CYMS (so, basically, past 2 years).

Movement peaks now (first 2 or 3 weeks in May). Things slow down, but continue after that.

TBH late is June and July, not May 4th! 🙂 I KNOW it's unnerving, but you have to chill and let it happen for the first few weeks. Especially someone with your stats and the number of irons you have in the fire!!!

2018 isn't valid anymore. They still had the MAR. Totally different system with different initial acceptance and WL movement patterns. Look at 2019 and 2020 for the best comparison to 2021.

Knightdoc: tells everyone to calm tf down

me: continues to ask everyone about whether having silence is bad on May 5th

There is an incredible amount of confusion over this, mostly because "ranked" is a very specific, counterintuitive terms of art. Everyone has a relative place on a WL. HP is the top, and T10 is top of the top. It is great, but does not mean the list is ranked. Ranked means #10 ALWAYS comes before #11, and there is no HPWL and regular WL, there is just one, ranked WL. T10 on a HPWL, could mean #11 comes first, if #11 fills a demo they need.

It's all good, and the odds are very high you are going to receive an A if they went to the trouble of telling you this, so the distinction between ranked and unranked isn't going to mean anything to you, and the fact that they haven't made calls yet also doesn't mean anything, unless their yield is so high, or they accept so many people initially, that they historically don't pull at least 10 people off the WL.

My dad is like, "you'll get in at all 3 of your waitlists, don't worry"...

like..I love the optimism but plz
Omg my parents are either super supportive or tell me to prepare to reapply. 🤠 it’s always one or the other which also adds an extra layer of ✨ stress ✨ to this process

Lol my parents fully admit that they have no idea how any of this works. Yesterday my Dad said something along the lines of "I'm just going to trust that you know enough and that you will read all the documents or whatever to fill in what you don't know."

my parents fully believe I am not getting in and are pressuring me to reapp, but I'm nervous about reapplying with essentially the same application (but hopefully a better MCAT score will help...?)

Has anyone seen any DO school movement? I would think it would have started if there was a lot of MD movement after April 30 and people perhaps selected an MD school they got accepted to over a DO school they got accepted to.

Practically none yet at my WL schools, I believe CTE for AACOMAS is May 15th so the last two weeks of may will be big for DO schools.

@adcomseverywhere

Just made this meme--hot off the press. Like this post if you can relate, ignore if you like last minute decisions
Yeah I felt this heavy. Im literally holding off from signing a lease for an apartment near my DO school because I'm waiting for WL movement from my one and only shot to MD. I am grateful, but I just wanna know if I can get in or not lol
