Haha I would think it's better to improve your application and reapply to US schools at a later time... I've heard some horror stories about carribean schools. Specifically, people going to them and not having success then leaving with enormous debt...

Yeah honestly even if you wanted to do something competitive like plastics or urology you would have a better chance matching as a DO than a Caribb

I was the same as you for a little bit; I actually got a cold from all the worrying cause I think my immune system broke down. I've since realized there are other things beyond medicine and that I believe I can truly be successful in other fields. Medicine is our dream and I hope we all get in and there is still a decent chance many of us do, but I've taken solace in the fact that it won't be the end of the world if I don't. Idk if this helps you, but it helped me. I've come to terms with it all and feel like a weight has been lifted.
 
The best part about having no hope is I am not neurotic nor anxious this cycle. Last cycle, being on 3 WL, i checked SDN ever day and was a complete nervous wreck. This year, im on 2 WL and have accepted the 99.9999% chance that I will be re-applying and I sleep pretty easy at night. I’ve just been focusing on the new cycle. Don’t usually recommend being pessimistic but in this case, i think it is exquisite for mental health lol, definitely would suggest giving it a shot
 
For folks that are sitting on waitlists pending their first admission and contemplating their futures -

Remember that your worth and value extends far beyond your acceptance or non-acceptance into med school. I know we put a lot of weight on getting in and believe me, as a reapplicant, I knowwww how daunting the idea of reapplying is.

Remember, too, that your dream of becoming a physician is not at stake right now, in these moments of hanging in the balance. I took not just a couple but eight(!) gap years and spent my 20s living a life that has been fun, rewarding, and full of experiences that I wouldn’t get otherwise. For most of those years the idea of medicine was just not a part of my life, thus many of my experiences were in no way geared towards strengthening my application, however what you’ll see is that real life experience strengthens your future application in ways that are hard to predict. Was it hard to take the MCAT after taking the prereqs as much as a decade prior? Ya, totally, but remember you want to enter a path of lifelong learning, so I do feel like that experience will be trivial in the grand scheme of becoming a physician.

I know it’s hard when you have a life plan, so you can finish your surgical oncology by X time or whatever, but your forever career will probably feel long enough even if it takes a few extra years to get there. If you decide that there are other life things that are more important and are incongruent with a timeline that includes reapplication, sure, you’re almost certainly capable of accomplishing something else too and maybe medicine isn’t the best option.

But for the folks that are just intimidated by what’s ahead, don’t be afraid to take a step back, take a deep breath, go have some fun, and give yourself the space to grow as a person - your future applicant self will thank you.
 
LM 78.4 waitlisted at four schools, all T20. Not an ounce of productivity in me at the moment. Refreshing my email, checking my phone all the while trying to forget about potential reapplications. I don’t know what to do besides do nothing...

yup, this is the worst. before i used to be able to distract myself by going out of the house, going on a hike or whatever. now im just like unable to focus on anything except hoping for that phone call.
 
For schools with tiered waitlists, do LOIs or updates have the ability to influence or shift your position on the WL? Or is your WL position pretty much set in stone at that point?
 
for those of you on MD waitlists, are you holding DO acceptances? I applied only DO and am on the waitlist at my top school, so I was curious to know if many people were still waiting on MD while being accepted by DO schools...(Rowan SOM in particular)...

aw thanks friend! Rowan is so choosy..I've seen people with sub 3 GPAs get admitted and those with 3.8 rejected...so my fingers and toes are crossed...

I was accepted into 4 DO schools but I have narrowed it down to AZCOM. Currently on 3 MD waitlists but planning on matriculating to AZCOM just because im kinda over the waiting at this point

Sorry if this is a repeat question, but I just found out the school I'm WL at already has a full class after only making 1 call off the WL (confirmed via email). Does this mean there will be minimal movement going forward? The school is T30 but has high OOS tuition, so it's appealing but expensive and I'm hoping that will make some people accept elsewhere if called off other WLs. Just looking for hope at this point.

Basically everything is a repeat question at this point, but no need to apologize. Everyone is on edge and the thread is already 39 pages long! 🙂

Your question is one of the better ones, and you have a pretty good handle on the situation. If the school sent you an e-mail saying they are full AND told you they only made 1 WL call (were they really that transparent?), that's a sign there is not going to be a ton of movement.

There are less than 29 more attractive schools (plus IS state schools), and people would need to be called off another WL to create a vacancy. There are only so many schools more appealing than this one, so it does not look like there is going to be a lot of movement. Is there any way you can find out where you are on the list? If so, THAT would give you the information you need to be able to intelligently forecast your chances.

There is always hope, but, unfortunately, there is less hope here than at other, maybe lower ranked schools that are experiencing far more movement already. Sorry.

Thank you for your reply. Surprisingly they were that transparent to one brave soul who emailed them asking for clarification. Fortunately I'm in the top priority category (top 1/3) of their WL but it's looking like there will not be any additional movement. 🙁

The school that you are referring to has a CTE date 2 months away. It is an amazing school, but expensive as hell for OOS. People already accepted to this school may choose less expensive school if they get off WL at other schools. You still have a shot if you are on the top tier WL. My friend got off the WL at this school a couple of days before their CTE date last year. So there be some WL movement. If you dont get that call from Dr. S. and its 2 weeks after the CTE date, then all hope may be lost, but not until then. Sending you positive vibes. GL.

Thanks so much Benz, I may need a brief hiatus from SDN but I’ll be back to cheer on everyone. The last time I was in this spot, Goro straight up told me to quit. I know how important it is to have support from others - even if they are strangers. I owe it to this community and will pay it back because I don’t think I would have made it through this gauntlet alive if it weren’t for you lot.

Knowing that, I wouldn't write it off just yet.

Top 1/3 could be the next person to be called! There definitely will be some additional movement, because it's almost impossible for nobody currently PTE there to be called off any WLs given how early it is. Granted, there will not be a ton of movement, but, honestly, there will not be none.

I wouldn't place a huge bet on it, but I also wouldn't write it off just yet. You'll see -- there will be some movement. Depending on where in the top 1/3 you are, it might be you!!
 
I’ve been trying to stay very positive about this and not give up hope, but there was a confluence of things going on today and I had my first ever anxiety attack.
I’m only sharing to let others know that you’re not alone in this and things are going to get better.
