2020 Cycle Waitlist Support Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
idk why but the group members did not go down at all after april 30....
Lol well, the idea is that, presumably, the number by which the group count increased in the last 7 days is how many people have gotten accepted off the waitlist. (obviously, this can be wholly inaccurate as there are current students and students accepted a while ago that can join at any time. Also, several people just may not have Facebook or won't join the group). But lol, frankly, something is better than nothing for me at this point. As for why it did not go down, I assume a lot of people could care less than to leave Facebook groups; I am still in several groups from years ago that are undoubtedly defunct.

Haha I’ve been doing the same thing! Then I saw old students on there so I didn’t know how accurate it would be!

Lol has anyone else been checking the class facebook pages of your WL school(s) to see how many people have joined in the last week? Not an exact science, by any means, but its something...
yes and also checking the amount of students in the class of 2024 page vs the class of 2023/2022. at my top choice, 2024 has around 150 members less than the others which is giving me some hope!!!

me too the group sizes for the past 4 years for my top choice are all around 260-280, and 2024 is 185 now. i am not sure if that can send some positive vibes

i feel like a huge stalker/creep doing this, but glad to know i'm not the only one comparing this year's FB group to past years lol

Lmao same and now I just feel like im speculating!!! It’s useful info but also ugh I’m weak

WOO loving these positive vibes for everyone!! Seeing 158 less people in my WL c/o 2024 group gives me a bit more hope... who says all neurotic behavior has to be bad 😉 for sure makes me feel better than being told for the 1000th time to simply "stop worrying" lol like thanks I'm cured

So I emailed my admission coordinator about whether she believes there will be any movement after the April 30th deadline and this was her response. Why do I feel like I have a thousand more questions after getting a response then before? Haha

Hello (student name aka me)
We anticipate that a small number of currently accepted applicants may still choose to go elsewhere and decline their offer of acceptance to (school name). With the deadline (April 30th) for return of matriculation deposits passed, the majority of applicants have made their final decision. In past years we have offered acceptances in May and early June - unfortunately, we are unable to be any more specific (because it is impossible to predict) except to say that a few more offers of admission may be forthcoming. We will notify you immediately with any change in your status. I hope this helps – let me know if you have questions; thank you for your patience and for your interest in (school name).

wow this was the vaguest answer they could give lol

Just checked the FB page for mine, and happy to announce that this year has *drum roll* even more people than the past years... RIP

did some schools extend the apr. 30th deadline for accepted applicants? it seems like some people are still holding onto multiple acceptances (could be misinterpreting though)..

Each school has their own CTE deadline, many are in june and july, so I'm guessing there are plenty of people still holding onto multiple acceptances

Facebook group numbers are pretty useless because a lot of current students in other years join and you don't know which members are incoming matriculants vs current students.

Don't want to burst any bubbles but I also don't want people to spread false hope either.

Actually most of these groups are designated for the class of that year "___________ class of 2024." The moderator confirms you are a newly accepted student before approving membership. So in theory all the members would be newly accepted (other than the moderator). However, as other people have noted, schools accept many more people than actually matriculate. And people often do not bother to cancel memberships in FB groups.

I’m literally in such a group. At least half the members are not matriculants. They are current medical students. Some accepted students have left the group. But some of these groups for prior years are 350 people when the class size is only 150 or less because medical students from other years are in them.

I’m simply suggesting that people not look at Facebook groups as an indication of trying to “count” how many people have been accepted. It’s futile.

OK. That's odd. What's the point of making a private group for a particular class if they let anyone in? Maybe some are school staff? I agree it's not really an accurate measure of things.

But they don’t let anyone in. They let in current medical students because they can talk to the matriculants and answer questions about housing curriculum second look etc. It’s actually really helpful. Like I’d want MS3s in a group of MS2s to answer questions about rotations. Letting current MS1s and MS2s into a group of incoming matriculants is not all that different.

Hi guys just wanted to share my story and some encouragement.

I applied two cycles ago and received 3 interviews and 3 WL. Ultimately I came off none of them and reapplied this cycle.

It’s a huge bummer and such a long process - one of my schools had me waiting for over a year on a final decision! Having been where some of you currently are, I encourage you to focus on your well being, to not get too down about things, and cope in healthy ways.

If it does come down to reapplying, give it your all and focus on substantial improvement. Don’t be shy to reapply to the same schools! Of those three schools from two cycles ago, two interviewed and both accepted me this time around. If you have any specific questions about reapplying, feel free to ping me.

Good luck!!

What about other folks who already got acceptance but is waiting from their top choice?

RIP my top choice just told us they still have more people holding acceptance than the expected class size

also it is so stupid that the school says still there are a lot of people not following the AAMC PTE protocol means these people are hold multiple As and the school has no intent to decline their offers as of now this so unfair for us

That’s why I don’t understand this PTE/CTE system. It is in the students best interest to wait until CTE deadlines before making a decision, especially if the PTE deadlines are just suggestions and not actual rules.

this is totally nonsense for me because people on SDN say school will decline those's offers if they don't make the 4/30 deadline but apparently it is not. what i have heard from the director of my top choice says they are contacting and waiting these people to make their PTE decisions. also she said it is the same to CTE date she will probably give another two weeks to those who can't make the CTE deadline. so what is the point of AAMC traffic guideline

AMCAS only makes recommendations. Each individual school chooses what to enforce and what dates to enforce things. I expect next year that more schools will clearly lay out their dates and what can happen if you fail to follow. I think each school should explicitly state things. Applicants are (should be) adults and follow the rules and if they fail, they should lose acceptances.

Y'all, I've been the epitome of SDN neuroticism, lurking every SDN thread known to man the entire year of 2020. I truly never thought this day would come, but I JUST GOT THE CALL OFF THE WAITLIST!!!! Absolutely in shock rn. If I can do it with all this anxiety, I know each and every one of y'all can too. Never lose hope guys.

ok so let me make it more clear to everyone here. The school (at least for my top choice) posts their specific deadline which follows the AAMC traffic rules but they have no intent to keep their deadline firmly enforced. As I said even the school specific deadline for PTE is 4/30, people still violate it and the admission hasn't declined their offer or given any penalty to these people. This is like when I was in undergrad I always made my tuition payment late but the school never charged me any late fee which they supposed to. Ya feel me?

Hi! If I emailed admissions asking about waitlist movement (if there will be movement this year/ when will it begin), can that be looked upon unfavorably?

Unsure, why can't schools be more transparent about the waitlist process in terms of how many students they are expecting to take off the list/how many are enrolled right now. Do they have something to lose if they give out this info?

I know it's so hard on this end, but how would you like to be an administrative assistant, fielding dozens of emails each day asking the same basic question? Especially when they may not be in the loop on where things stand. These Admin Assistants probably have "a stock reply" on a separate cut and paste screen for this entire month.

Most of us aren't sending emails except for LOI sent to the appropriate address when schools allow it..

This is exactly why they should post at least some basic info about the WL process. They probably wouldn’t get as many basic questions

I get what you are saying. The issue is that many (not your top choice) do not list dates. If they do, they do not say what will happen if you don't comply. Every interview day should include at least a 5-minute talk regarding this. Some schools do enforce the dates, but most attempt to contact acceptees first.

Lol, Rush right? Yeah when I heard there were some students holding onto multiple acceptances still, that one hurt.

idk what pisses me off more: the fact that the PTE/CTE guidelines are totally useless if they're not enforced, or the fact that the 2019-2020 cycle has been open for over a year now, and people with multiple acceptances are acting like they need more than 365 days to make a decision, whereas many of us are unnecessarily desperate for just one

(i say unnecessary because we've all put in a ton of hard work/money/hope/determination/patience, enough to be considered for an interview and WL position, but are stuck on hold in this ridiculous process)

edit: i told myself to stay off sdn today and here i am ranting lol sorry
