2020 Cycle Waitlist Support Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I

I heard from one medical school that there have been a lot of students deferring or declining their acceptance due to the corona virus. Would you say that is true?

idk about a lot but I can definitely see this happening particularly in severely effected states. If someone’s family was profoundly affected or if they have now suddenly become responsible for the care of a loved one who has been effected by the virus it would make sense that they would choose to defer, maybe even decline if their situation demands. It’s an extremely difficult time for so many people unfortunately.

From here, it appears almost identical to last year except that the over-acceptance that happened at one school seems to have been avoided.
For the most part, only very fancy east coast schools pull away West coast acceptees.
Thank you for providing insight into West coast schools!

I'm on Irvine's WL and the school stated that there's been very little movement so far. I was hoping it was due to COVID delays since they typically take many students from the WL, but now it sounds more like they have their full class already. Should I just give up hope now? (preparing to reapply regardless but whether to have my heart rate spike whenever I get a phone call you feel)

If last year is any indication, there is not likely to be much movement.
If anything, virtual meetings have decisions easier and more efficient (but less fun).
Still, as long as waitlist movement has started at any particular school, it is likely to continue (albeit a slower and slower rate).

Is there typically a different committee that selects student off an unranked WL? Like a waitlist committee as opposed to a selection committee

@gyngyn How many of the accepted applicants have more than one acceptance at your school? Are applicants adhering to the PTE/CTE guidelines (compared to last year)?

Adherence is hard to judge because different schools have different expectations but very few students are holding more than one acceptance.

to make matters worse this massive covid-induced hiring freeze is making it pretty difficult to find a gap year job as a plan b now :/ every job interview turns into me being placed on “hold”. i’m already waitlisted from medical school and now waitlisted on jobs. 🙁

OMG JUST GOT MY FIRST ACCEPTANCE!!!!! OFF THE WAITLIST. WAKE FOREST HERE I COME.

I JUST WANT TO SAY THIS GROUP HAS BEEN REAL. I wish all of you experience this feeling. I know that all of you will and we will all be colleagues very shortly. Stay strong fam!!

Just got that A at my top choice school after interviewing 9 months ago! Thank you guys so much for being such a supportive group and I have no doubt good news is coming for all of you!
OMG CONGRATULATIONS!!!! Also so incredibly inspired by your patience to hear back. I interviewed at my top choice back in October and the wait has had been/is torture!!!

Well it is nice to be seeing movement pick up again! I hope the rest of us waiting in limbo experience this same movement soon

Found out one of the two schools im waitlisted at has moved their CTE date to JUNE 15. Lmao it’s like they’re just like f**k all of you guys on our waitlist then huh?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't an earlier CTE deadline be beneficial to waitlisters? They'll be able to withdraw anyone accepted who hasn't CTE'd and give those spots to those on the WL sooner rather than later. I suppose you could say it may be less of a benefit in that those who are accepted who also have WLs may have less of an opportunity to get off those WLs, and thus less people may withdraw and just commit to not risk it.

Yes that’s correct! Isn’t June 15 a very late CTE date??? Or is that early compared to other schools??

I agree. From my understanding, an earlier CTE date is beneficial to those on WL w/no A’s. Not beneficial to those with an A and waiting to see if they can get off of other school’s WL

Ok ok that would make more sense. I guess they are just more full than last year bc they have pulled zero WL people so far

Lack of WL movement is most likely a factor of the COVID-19 response slowing down administrative processes at a lot of med schools, and the fact that since the WL is moving little to none at a lot of schools, students aren't getting off WLs and withdrawing, which would then normally allow for even more WL movement.

There are a good amount of schools I think that start in July whose CTE date is in June as most schools like to have their CTE date be 1 month before they start. They will likely pull people off the waitlist after the CTE date because there may be some students (who are waiting for WL movement at preferred schools) who will potentially wait till that date to withdraw from said school so they may have to do some rushed filling

Hey! Can you message me? Trying to message you but can't find the way

I think a lot of MD schools have a mid-July CTE date while some MDs and lots of DOs have a mid-June CTE date. I could be wrong, though.
DO schools do not participate in the AMCAS CYMS "tool."

Hi everyone, first time US applicant here. It took me forever to find this group. Does anyone know the odds of getting accepted off the waitlist at this point in time (specifically for Georgetown and VCU)? Kind of frustrated right now tbh. Thank you very much for any input.

If they don't give you a rank or general idea of where you are on the waitlist, I'm not sure if there's any reliable way of knowing your chances 🙁

I'm frustrated about the same thing because none of the four schools I'm waitlisted at tell us anything..

Thanks for the input. Man, I hope you can hear something soon. I see you come a long way, best of luck to you!

Waitlist purgatory has been too painful the last couple of days. I was doing so well at the end of April/beginning of May, but now it’s May 12th, my waitlists have barely made a dent, and I feel stuck and lost. All this staying inside isn’t helping either. Just wanted to put this out there. I’m really hoping this feeling of dread won’t be much longer for all of us on this thread.

I feel this so hard
I’ve been snacking so hard to fill the void lol

I just wish more friends/family/anyone not doing this process understood this :/

Yea CA$PER absolutely sucks and more schools are using it LOL. Also, I think ALL schools should have to notify students after their application has been reviewed whether it is a hold, interview, or rejection. So many damn schools just keep us in silence, and I find that it's a terrible thing to do.

Three interviews, one post-interview rejection and two WL's. I've been feeling really down and anxious. I'm not sure what I could do to increase my chances. Thank you for your posts guys. It helps to know we are not alone.

Try calling the schools you were waitlistd at to get information on movement - shows interest
Send a letter of intent to your top choice
Send an update letter/letter of interest to your other choice
See if either of the schools accept post interview LORs

I saw my advisor’s tool that shows when rejections and interviews were given. One school did not let me know i was rejected until 3 MONTHS after they made the decision.

That's just insane!!! Once a decision has been made, what possible reason could a school have to not share it with a candidate while sharing it with advisors? Do you happen to know whether all med schools provide this info to the UGs through this tool? If so, we should be able to go to the advising office every once in a while to see if there is anything we need to know.

Some of the schools were outdated and didn’t have the correct info at all (i.e. i had a rejection and it didn’t show a rejection on their screen). It just so happened that this one school showed a rejection August 8th and i didnt get an email until november!

Over the course of this cycle I received 6 interviews (5 MD and 1 DO) and only 1 A from the DO school. Its pretty disheartening because im WL'd at 3 MD schools which I would love to go to. The feedback I got at 2 (1 top 20 and 1 top 50) of my interviews that ended up as WLs was really good with one actually in one of my interviewers calling me aside at the end of the day to chat with me. Regardless, it sucks to feel like I put in all this work and got some good looks from some good schools to have it result in just 1 A to a school far from home. Any thoughts on my situation at all?

I know this is a killer, but with that many interviews, my guess is you're in good shape. Although perhaps your stats are borderline low (a DO A), so you may be down the list a bit as they invite higher level folks. Hang in there!
