It's not random. They could tell us our position in the WL if they wanted to, but they don't because it would give make things more difficult for them (and as we know, respecting applicants' time is not exactly a priority for them)
I think LOI can be helpful cuz at least it shows we care enough to jump through an additional hoop (and a voluntary one at that).

Yeah that's true, but also at the same time it seems like holding a huge waitlist seems counter productive for them because they know they never need 200+ alternate options and it keeps their staff busy sifting through tons of LOI and updates.

The process is tuned to schools not to students.

They were taking the LOI as a lie anyway, so can’t expect anything better.

Also are they promoting a process to encourage lies ! I thought there is a mission schools have to be nice atleast.

One of the schools I'm waitlisted at says that their waitlist is ordered based on ADCOM scores but when I emailed them to see if they would let me know m place on it they told me it was not ordered. I think I prefer this because sending a LOI could just show interest (even if they think its a lie) and also "remind" them of your application out of the others on the waitlist. This is just me speculating because I have no idea.
 
Hey guys I have a general question for update letters. I know some schools don’t specifically require final semester grade updates. Would it be wise to send it anyway? I’m finishing up my last semester with three classes and none of them are required science classes or anything like that.

If they are not requiring it/those classes, I don't see a reason to send the transcript-- not only is it money out of your pocket, but it is also an unnecessary add-on to all the information admissions boards are already filtering through..(sorry if I come off strong it truly isn't my intention).

If you are sending the update because you feel like it will strengthen your application... then maybe, but even at this point once on the WL, I haven't seen it to be a beneficial thing to send medical schools a bunch of extra information if it isn't a significant change to your application (strengthening factor). At times, it can even be viewed as a negative thing. good luck!

hey guys! just wanna confirm something: May 1st is when applicants must narrow down their acceptances to one? or is it may 15th? I have both dates marked for some reason

Hi everyone! Wondering what's the difference between a ranked and unranked waitlist? And how would I know if it's ranked?
 
Didn't realize this group existed until now but so happy that it does. I've felt super discouraged especially with other friends getting straight acceptances. Has 3II--> 3 WL and one rejection from the waitlist so now sitting on 2 WL. Hope there is movement

Very few schools have a ranked WL (by AAMC definition). Those that do, have enumerated their WL and may not deviate from it.
You may certainly ask if the school has a ranked waitlist.
Most schools have groupings within which any applicant may be called (depending on the needs of the school and the composition of the class). For example, if the school has a state mandate to provide primary care and there are very few accepted students with evidence of that inclination, those with a demonstrated commitment to primary care may be chosen over overwise similar candidates.

rooting for you!! rejections from WL always puzzle me like does that mean the school is officially not expecting anymore movement on their WL?

Honestly not sure, or it could mean they were looking at other people in their waitlist and ranked them higher than me, or that they are expecting low WL movement. Since I interviewed in september and got my decision in december I wish they would have just rejected me at that point rather then letting me go through waitlist purgratory.

What do you think about schools that rank people into tiers (Tier 1 being the top all the way to Tier 4 being the bottom)

There are years in which a mis-calculation for the number needed to fill results in a surplus of accepted students. In this case, the entire WL will be vacated.

Something like this is much more common, but the "tiers" may be overlapping, not sharply defined.
This way, the tier "4" folks can be let go as soon as it is clear that they will not be reachable, followed by "tier 3"...
 
Joining you guys as I (im)patiently wait for May 1st.

Third-time applicant with lower than average matriculant stats. "Reinvented" myself in the last year starting from October of 2021, and attempted to fix a lot of my weaknesses. Dedicated about 6 days a week on ECs. Rewrote my entire app from scratch. Worked on my interviewing skills to the best of my ability (although maybe not enough!).

First two applications cycles, I received 1 interview each, one was a WL and the other a R (after miserably bombing the interview). This application cycle, I managed to receive 4, which became 3 WLs and 1 R.

Was waitlisted at my top choice despite having significantly lower stats of the school (somewhere in the 10th/25th percentiles). Was really excited about that.

Overall, still optimistic and this cycle worked out amazingly better for me than I expected, but definitely a very exhausting process. Fingers crossed for everyone, and hoping people don't have to go through this 3 times like I did.

3rd time applicant (I guess technically 2nd since I withdrew the first time) as well. Rooting for the both of us! 🥳
 
This might be a dumb question, but if/when schools accept you off the waitlist and give you a timeline to respond, is that a deadline for PTE or CTE. For example, if I get into school A in the first week of May and have to respond in 48 hours, would I be making a binding agreement to go to school A? Or would I be able to select school B if they accept me at the beginning of June without any consequence? I was looking it up online and it seems like CTE is dependent on school, but all these traffic rules are so confusing to me lol
 
^ actually another question to add on to my earlier post is whether you ever have to submit the PTE button? I think I read somewhere that you don't technically have to PTE anywhere, but just have to limit your schools to being accepted at only one school from April 30th onwards. That being said, I don't want to mess anything up by not pressing that button.

Plan to Enroll is non-binding while Commit to Enroll is. If you select Plan to Enroll for a school on April 30th you remain on other waitlists but are required to rescind other acceptances. If sometime in the summer you are accepted by another school you prefer, you can drop your prior acceptance and switch to Plan to Enroll for the second school. Commit to Enroll deadlines are school specific (most are in June/July) therefore you may have more or less time to decide depending on the school. Once you Commit to Enroll you withdraw all remaining applications.

PTE/CTE deadlines are unrelated to school deadlines to submit a deposit. In your scenario, you would submit your deposit to school A in 48 hours, and go to CYMS tool to select PTE for that school. Let’s assume school A’s CTE date is June 30. That means you have until June 30 to make a binding decision to school A. If school B accepts you early June, and you want to go to school B, then you would pay your deposit for school B, and go to CYMS to switch your PTE school to school B. You would notify school A that you want to withdraw your acceptance. Now let’s assume school A’s CTE date is May 30. If May 30 comes along and you haven’t heard from school B, then you MUST go to the CYMS tool and select CTE for school A, or risk losing your spot. You then have to notify all of your other schools that you are withdrawing your applications from those schools.

Per AMCAS traffic rules, you should select PTE for one school by April 30th, even if you only have one acceptance. I don’t know if there are any ramifications if you don’t complete PTE in the CYMS. It may just be based on the honor code, but I don’t see any reason not to complete it as it allows schools to generate spreadsheets to better gauge class enrollment and make timely waitlist decisions, and it makes this painful process smoother for all parties involved.

Can someone help me make sense of the numbers for Geisel? They told us that they waitlist a third of the interviewees which would be around 150-200 people, so I’m unsure where the 10-30 comes from. Also, is it saying that they accept more than on the waitlist? I’m confused.

I wouldn't put too much weight on that form. Unfortunately, I believe it is outdated/inaccurate
