I worked in a 24 hour pharmacy once on the night shift which was 8pm -8am with 4 hour break when you tried to grab some sleep.
Customers at 2am were a very odd bunch of pimps, addicts and the occasional weirdo. In those days amphetamine was used as a nasal decogestant and sold as Benzedrine inhalers, Crystal Meth (Methyl amphetamine, Methedrine) also used. One customer bought a benzedrine inhaler, casually dropped it on the floor, stamped on it to crack it open and then tore off a strip of the amphetamine soaked paper inside and swallowed it down.
I often worked from 8pm til midnight, then to bed and woken up at 4am for 4am -8am shift. What with the noise, camp bed etc I found great difficulty in getting off to sleep. Nembutal was most effective and short acting.
A three week stint was enough but great experience.
