Is this stuff only happening in pain or is it just bc I'm in this field I notice fraud more in this field?

Plenty of Medicare fraud in all fields

Biggest fraud was by an Optho guy who was recently convicted in Florida

And don't forget all the oncology guys giving chemo to patients who have no CA

Yea but I feel like pain docs have such a bad rep, vs oncologists, optho ...u don't get the same reaction from the public

That's because of pill mills down in Florida. Largely populated by non pain docs who wrote narcs for cash.

In this situation, it seems like many of the offenders were ortho. I don't understand how doctors could enter into business relationships and sign contracts without their attorneys reviewing them. It seems any competent health care attorney would detect the fraudulent activity in these schemes.

Some were illegal kickback schemes. They always smelled fishy to me, therefore I never indulged even though these were pushed by the reps.

When I was in NC, I sat in on a lecture/dinner by a pain cream company asking physicians to buy in for 10k. I know a lot of pain guys that did. I thought it smelled fishy and stayed out. I agree though, I bet a lot of those docs had no idea that they were breaking stark rules. The contract attorneys who wrote up the whole deal should share the blame. And I just read about that retinal specialist down in Florida. What a jackass!

The rep partly because of marketing by chiros and others. Almost anyone can call themselves a "pain specialist". Oncologist, nephrologist, orthopedic surgeon - those terms are not really subject to interpretation.

As far as actual medical/Medicare fraud, I agree that it's all over the place in all fields. PLENTY of PCPs and others absolutely jump off the ethical cliff and don't look back. To be fair, if you gave the same opportunities to the general public, I bet the same number of people would also throw in the towel. Actually, thinking about the number of realtors and lawyers in my town, probably more of the general public would go for the con...
