Hey! I currently have a gpa of ~3.0. I have a degree in business administration and I immediately began my science classes after completing my degree. My question is this: should i retake a couple of classes i made C's in that i could definitely get A's in now along with the science classes i would be taking (this would total 16 hours), or should I take more science classes instead (totalling 12-17 hours)?

Do all that you need to in order to rock your Pre-req's.

Retake the classes that will do the most to pull up your GPA regardless of discipline.

Take a couple of upper level science to demonstrate your readiness (rock those too of course).

my $0.02

PS. Somewhere around here there's a great GPA calculating spreadsheet that might help.

Waspahh33, I am in the same situation as you almost. I will have a 3.01 or so by the end of this semester.

This past semester (which ends in a week) I took:

genchem 1 (retake, first time taking the course was four years ago)
physics 1 (retake, first time taking the course was three years ago)
bio 1 (retake, first time taking the course was three years ago)
Neurogenetics
Kinesiology

Next semester in the spring, I am thinking about doing the same thing, and re-taking 3 pre-reqs (the 2's, genchem 2, bio 2, and physics 2) and taking 2 new classes. This is what I am registered for right now for the spring, but I am thinking about changing my schedule taking more new classes as opposed to re-takes.

The reason is that getting A's in the pre-reqs I took this semester took a lot of work, but the Adcoms might not recognize this. I hardly remembered anything from the first time around for these courses, and the tests weren't even very content based - they were more about just pure skill. So, the fact that I was taking these classes the second time around didn't really help much ...but the adcoms won't know this. They might just assume that it is very easy to get an A on a re-take. So, I'll be working real hard to get As in classes that won't even impress anyone.

What are all your opinons about this (the paragraph directly above specifically)?

Seeing as you can pretty much "play the system" for D.O. programs I'd say retake those classes and replace the C's. I think O-chem and Physics are really important to get A's in. If youre talking about a C in gen bio for example, it might be better to just ace an advanced biology course.

To the OP:
Retake classes where needed, it will make a big difference for your AACOMAS GPA. Also take some upper level sciences, a lot of schools want to see those anyway.

I don't know what your grades were the first time around but if getting As means that your GPA will increase significantly (keep in mind AACOMAS uses the retake opposed to averaging the two like AAMCAS, this can very by school) then by all means you should retake them. Adcoms don't care how much effort you think it took, succeeding (with as much or as little effort) is what they're looking for IMO.

I know they don't care how much effort that I think that it took. What matters is how much effort and skill that they think that it takes to get an A in a specific class.

They (adcoms) might not be impressed by an A in a retaken re-req. If they really only cared about the grade (and not the class), I would take these 5 classes next semester and party all night and sleep all day, and still end up with a 4.0: Weight training, badminton, tennis, swimming, basic pre-calculus (the lowest level math class available at my school).

But, obviously, some classes are going to impress them more than others.
