hey everyone i took the april 18th mcat and got a 25Q, PS 8 VR 7 BS 10

i was getting 28 to 33 on the practice kaplans and aamc tests, but that day i just let the nerves get the best of me and choked badly

i am retaking on june 18th and still feel like i know the material and feel like i can and will do better

my question is, will my application take a big hit from applying in the middle of july instead of earlier?

i mean i went to a big 10 school, im from NJ, have a 3.90 gpa, around a 3.90 science gpa, double major in bio and nutrition, honors college student, research exp, senior thesis done and submitted already, TA experience, tutoring experience, shadowing exp., volunteering at a hospital, habitat for humanity, AED member, IM sports, got accepted into the UMDNJ summer program which accepted 30 out of 300+ applicants, and UMDNJ is my top choice, etc

any help or suggestions is greatly appreciated, thanks in advance

retake and score higher. Make sure you can break 30s on practice exams. your GPA is great and you seem to have enough ECs so use the summer to do your apps and study for the MCAT. June 18 is 3 weeks. Its still early. You would be good for the state schools if you break 30, I believe.

UMDNJ-NJMS also has autoinvites for certain MCAT scores.

thanks, do you think that UMDNJ will give me an advantage since they accepted me into their summer program?

since the people on the selection committee are the same for both med school and the summer program

Have you participated in any Educational Programs at NJMS? _____ Yes ____ No
Name of program(s): ______________________________________________ Date(s): _______________

That is from NJMS secondary.

Nothing to fill out on RWJ secondary.

Perhaps it will help.

hopefully, any little bit helps

i was looking at AAMC data and it says that white applicants scoring between a 24 to 26 MCAT and a 3.80 to 4.00 gpa had an 48% acceptance rate, so apparently people still get in with that score, and the rate goes to 75% at 27 to 29 mcat and around 90% with 30+ MCAT scores

link? there's no way that data is correct. i'd say with 24-26 your chance drops to about 5%..... tops

Haha, what? If it's released by the AAMC why would you "put very little stock" in that information?

you're honestly going to tell me that 50% of the people that apply to medical school get in? How exactly then do schools get over 5000 applications for less than 100 spots.....

3.8-4.0 MCAT 24-26
46.7 % n = 2206 apps

3.8-4.0 MCAT 27-29
76.0% n = 3848 apps

30-32
87.5% n = 4205

this is for caucasian applicants. 2005 - 2007

reported by AMCAS. does NOT include DO schools

Those stats are incredibly deceiving...... The reason it is such a high percentage is b/c the only white people who would apply with those stats would be those who know they have some economic disadvantage/ or would be given some leeway into getting in. I understand that URM is for minorities only, but there might be a lot of consideration given to caucasian applicants coming from disadvantaged backgrounds as well....
Therefore if you are a middle class and above white guy, I doubt you would get in with those stats (unless you have some stellar EC's or you live in a great state)

40% of applicants do get in out of the total number. The thing is most applicants apply to a crapload of schools, so even though most schools are accepting only 5-10% of their applicants, 40% end up receiving AT LEAST one acceptance....

Sorry, this reply is for the OP.

You have a stellar GPA but you might need to get at least 28+ to have a solid chance w/ a 3.9. Make sure you really think about what happened the first time, b/c statistically if you studied a lot the first time around, you get a similar score the second time ....

That number might actually not be that far off. Many people apply to multiple schools. Thus, the number of applicants is inflated, since you can only attend one school in the end.

40% of applicants end up matriculating into an allopathic medical school

That table is bizarre. I have a hard time ever believing 8% of applicants get accepted with a 3.0 to 3.2 and an 18-20 on the mcat. Heck, 30% or so at 3.3 and 27 seems pretty high even.

People who know they have absolutely no shot won't apply with those numbers. Maybe the people in that 8% had a PhD, a forgiving state school, disadvantaged status, and had founded an AIDS clinic. Or all of the above.
