With the money your making I am finding it hard to understand why you want to change careers. Maybe you have gotten inspired by the doctors around you. I mean if you are dedicated to the profession you should not have a problem at some schools since i hear they have some mature students in their 30s. Plus you have added bonus of money on your side since you probably have some money saved up for your education now. But if that loans will be the way which you should be able to pay back albeit at a later age cuz you entered the profession at a later age. If you believe in yourself you can tackle it i say go for it, if not be happy with what you have now which is by far amazing too.

I will be turning 31 next month, and am a medical device sales rep earing approximately $150,000 a year. I am married, and also have a mortgage.

After working with and around Doctors in an O.R. enviroment, i've get the itch to practice medicine myself.

I spent a lot of time partying and not a lot of time studying during my Undergrad at a Big 10 school, earning myself a 2.5 GPA. I did take a fair amount of Biology and Chemistry glasses and faired better in those, then in my Marketing classes, which was my major.

With all this said, I have two questions:

1. Is there any hope if I retake all the need pre-req's, that I can be admitted to a Carribean medical school?

2. At this point is it too late to attempt to go to medical school, complete residency, take on loans, etc.

I appreciate any advice!

I'm sorry but I hate this and it should never be a reason to practice or not to practice medicine. Medicine should be something you are burning to do, something you will regret not becoming.


Yes you can take the preqs and do half decent on the MCAT (26 or better) and get into a Caribbean school, Of course my answer is go for it but this is your decision!

My wife stayed in the US and worked. I visited, it was only 1.5 years not that long really.

MedicalDevices - I'm a 1st year med student in Ireland, and previously a 31-year-old device rep (turned 32 over here). I agree with OldPro, you have to want to do meds but it's not wrong to also recognize that money is a concern. I was earning similar numbers which have allowed me to finance my education here but I'll be anywhere from 40-47 before I even approach making the same figures a year ago. It's different for everyone, for me it was worth it. Feel free to PM me with any questions.
