I posted this in the med student forum but got no response.

I am a 2nd yr DO student and am extremely interested in anesthesia. My core rotations are at a regional (non-academic) hospital in the south, but I want to do my elective in an academic inst. Do you all know of anywhere that takes 3rd yrs?

Thanks

Don't start worrying about it until mid to end of 3rd year. Your desired specialty may change based on clinical exposure and national board exam performance. If you do choose to pursue Anesthesiology it would be smart to spend some time with the ones at your base institution before doing an out rotation. They'll know you better and also provide a good LOR if you're eager to learn and a hard worker.

Study hard for boards.

Your school allows you guys to do away electives during third year? But i agree with post above. Work hard during third year, see what you like, and set up a anesthesia rotation early in 4th, esp if you need a LOR.

you definitely don't need to do your 3rd year rotation at a big academic institution. Our school gives us 2 different 4 week electives during our 3rd year to do whatever we want. I did mine with a local anesthesiologist that takes students and received a great exposure to the field. I plan on doing a couple away rotations at the beginning of my 4th year.

We do get an elective 3rd year (just 1 true elective).

I guess what I am asking is should I do 3rd yr elective (anesthesia) at a hospital with interns, residents, etc? Or, should I just do it at the regional hospital where it will most likely just be me and my attending one on one?

I am asking because I want to come out of the gate hot my 4th yr.-- so that I can look like I know what I'm doing right off the bat

Imo it didn't really matter where you do it. Community or academic. In both you would be pretty self directed. There isn't much you could do aside from intubation and iv's/a lines/central lines. Much of the learning pharmacology wise is independent.

I think the benefit of doing it where residents are would be to get their perspective on applying and helping with your applications. However, they may be so busy trying to keep a patient alive that they might not be able to talk much or teach much about anesthesia (especially if it's early in the year and you're with a CA1).

But it might be nice to get one on one with an attending too. He can give you a better perspective of training overall. He'd be experienced so he can let you help more since he won't be as nervous letting you take the wheel. However, an academic LOR might have a bit more weight than community. But this might be less important if it's not from an md academic hospital (no offense).

Personally, I would rather do community in your situation. But I think either sound good. You just have to be very proactive about learning.

Good luck!
