45, 44, 43, 42.. how many per cycle?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Well we have to speculate and go by what we've heard from others. From my own info via the AAMC reps, a 45 has not happened since the new paper version or the CBT. 44s rarely and not since 2003. 43s happen pretty much every year, about 1-5. 42s happen every year, again about 5-20. 40s and 41s are more common with about 300 total happening (41s + 40s).

Actually I don't know a UCF admission's adviser was at my university he has seen a 4.0 with a 45 this admission cycle so I wouldn't say its a been a while.

These numbers match what I've heard and seen at the AAMC site. they list their data for public viewing. For 2007, the AAMC released data matches your numbers pretty much spot on.

Prior to the CBT switch in 2007, the verbal was capped at 13-15, so a true 45 was not possible.

The funny thing is that there's some guy at UCLA advertising his tutoring service that claims he got a 45 on the MCAT in 2007. Maybe he's friend of your advisor.

He is not my adviser, he came to my university to talk about UCF medical school. He was the director at UCF medical school and he handles admission. So I don't know if he is lying or telling the truth. But since UCF is offering 40 free scholarships this cycle, I don't see why not a 45 would apply. So he told us that 45 and 4.0 applied to their medical school and they accepted him.

how can you tell they're spot on? if 35 people got a 45, that would still round to 0.0% of 70,000 mcat takers.

to the previous poster who said they talked to an mcat rep, are you saying this was first hand information? was it someone who was telling it like it was, or guessing?

i didnt realize mcat posted the examinee results until today, but it would be neat to see hard numbers, not percentages.

If it is Mr. Larkin aka REL, I can assure you he is NOT A LIAR!! That said, I hope he posts on this thread and confirms what you stated as fact.

How do you get a 45 if the Verbal is capped at 13-15? You just kind of assign a 15 to all those folks?

Surely someone knows the answer. Anyone have an idea how many people score those top numbers per year? I've read a lot of speculation, but nothing firm.
People are so fascinated by this question; it comes up every year. I don't think that anyone really knows the answer, OP, and it probably varies from year to year and administration to administration. I only know that in Aug. 2004 when I took the test, there were eight 42s, two 43s, and no 44s or 45s. That was for an administration of just under 35,000 people. I have no idea how many of these scores have turned up in subsequent years or administrations. You could try writing to the AAMC and asking for the most current stats, which was what I did in late 2004. If you do, please come back and post the answer for your curious colleagues. 🙂

I am 100% certain that in last year's application cycle there was at least one person with a 45 and at least three people with 44s. There were dozens with 41-43. (I was not an applicant in that cycle)

Yeah I mean I have to believe this UCF medical Director guy that came to our school, why would he lie about a 45. He said he got a 45 applicant and I believe him and "nevercold" agrees with me. This 45 was for year 2008 so the stat report all the way up on this post is for 2007.

Like I said, my info is word of mouth and a year old (2006). So yeah, it's completely possible...especially since the CBT version of the exam.

The AAMC conference is coming up next week, so I'm sure the numbers for 2008 will be available soon. In years past, they released their data to the school advisors at that meeting, so hopefully it trickles down here.

Given that the 2007 mean was 25.1, perhaps the upper end is a bit more filled than previous years.

These threads are always interesting for a long time reader (very rare poster).

I can tell you that since AAMC did away with Verbal being 13-15, the Texas system of medical schools has NOT seen a 44 or 45.

When I asked Steve Barkley from AAMC if anyone had scored a 44 or 45, he said no. This was last year.

I have a strong suspicion that the 45 being reported is a combination of different tests.

Someone from TPR will be at the conference so I will let you know what they find out in regards to the numbers.

"44s rarely and not since 2003"

this is 100% false. My roommate got a 44 in the spring of 2007.

That's weird. How come my MCAT testing history report shows the percentile range that is from the 2007 year for my 2008 score? I took mine this year...

urg, apparently my freshman roommate got a 41 on this year's September examination. He said he only used the Kaplan Premier Program book. So jealous...
