Lots of people talk about how things should be, who should be doing what, who shouldn't, what's right, etc in terms of the field of anesthesia...

One day, if you do a residency in anesthesia, incredible, self-less attendings will bend over backwards and take huge paycuts to teach you your art...

One day, if you are an anesthesiologist in academics, you may feel like you are shortchanging your family by bringing home half of what you could if you were in private practice...

If you just talk, and don't act; that's WEAKSAUCE

TAKE 45 SECONDS to use the awesome tool the ASA has set up to email your representatives to insure proper reimbursement for your teachers and KNOW THAT YOU HAVE DONE SOMETHING

http://www.asahq.org/news/hr5246.htm

If you read this, and do not SPEND 45 SECONDS making a difference, you deserve to...

-Feel regret that you did nothing when you had the chance, before it was too late (to make a difference in this legislation)

-Feel like a hypocrite the next time you talk about how things "should be"

-Feel like a leech the next time you read about other people working hard to defend your profession when you did nothing...

45 SECONDS!

DO IT NOW!

Wow.

Nice post.

You should be making motivational DVDs.

I'm not a politically savvy dude.

But I took your advice and followed your instructions.

Nice post.

Sometimes I wonder what I value more on this forum... the anesthesia cases/info, or the witty one-liners.
Weaksauce
I can't wait to use this one.
👍
btw, I filled that thing out with 2 addresses, sent it to 102 people, including my PD, the anesthesia staff at my program, and all the residents and faculty. I also followed up a day later and asked everyone to make sure they did themselves this favor because "they could rest assured that if they (god forbid) go for surgery, that they would be administered anesthesia by a competent individual trained by top-notch teacher instead of what was left at the bottom of the barrel" Might have been a little stretch, but not untrue.
Distribute this link as if it were an AIDS vaccine!!!

speaking of one liners 👍

I already sent in the stuff last week w/ two addresses (given the fact that I was living in two diff places...not at the same time 😎 ). Try to even get non-anesthesiology docs to send it in. It's the "he scratches my back, I will scratch his back mentality".
I think as physicians we need to watch out for each others' specialties. Of course we need to be the ones MOST concerned about our specialty, however, midlevel infiltration is something stretching across the board.
Like Joshmir wrote, it's just a 45 sec endeavor.

My representative "does not support" this type of email. So I google'd here and got her website where one can send emails thru a form.

I cut and pasted the email suggested by the ASA and added a few flourishes. Done.

If you cannot send your rep an email directly thru the link, just take a few more minutes to look up their email address.

I got this response via email earlier this evening:

"Thank you for contacting me in support of legislation that would alter the inequity in CMS rules for anesthesiology care. I agree with you that anesthesiology programs are unfairly penalized by the current regulations. I am a cosponsor and a strong supporter of H.R. 5348, the Medicare Anesthesiology Teaching Funding Restoration Act of 2006, introduced by my colleague Representative Fortney "Pete" Stark, which would increase the fee schedule from 50% to 100% in cases where the teaching anesthesiologist works with two physician residents on cases that overlap.

Barney Frank"

I'd say that's a very positive reply. 🙂

Guys am I slow or is the link that SleepIsGood originally posted? BEcause I already bugged my rep about it.

I did it several days ago but I just had my fiancee use the link to write to her congressman/woman and apparently the link/site is experiencing a high traffic volume. I hope it is people actually contacting the senators to support this not someone trying to sabotage this effort.

I did my part. Now it's everyone in anesthesia turn to take action.

As an academic anesthesiologist, just wanted to thank Joshmir for taking the time to post this!

that has been introduced by Rep. Fortney "Pete" Stark (D-CA), which as HR 5246, would restore full funding to academic anesthesiology programs.

"Both pieces of legislation would restore full-funding to anesthesiology teaching programs, while holding all other types of educational programs harmless.

So go ahead and contact your representative about 5348 as well. Hopefully it's not overkill. I did.
