If you are planning to do a 4th year elective at a hospital away from home, where do you live. Everyone tells you to go away to the place you want to do your residency at ....but they forget that detail. Thanks

I figure there are 5 options:
1) find a hospital that offers cheap housing on-site...e.g. Hartford Hospital has the old School of Nursing dorm in which you pay pretty cheap prices to stay by the month or week. I stayed there when I was doing a summer research program and there were several residents/interns who were living there while they looked for permanent housing. It's right across the street so you don't even need a car
2) arrange a trade with someone doing an away rotation at your school and swap apartments for the month
3) sublet someone's apartment
4) hotel/motel/extendedstay residence option. expensive, yes, but might be your only option. the extended-stay places tend to be a lot cheaper and may be close to the hospital if it's downtown
5) choose your rotations based on where you know people who live there that you can mooch off of....e.g. the 4th year who is in Cinci doing a rotation at the Children's is staying with her boyfriend (she goes to school in Kansas City). I could do a rotation in San Diego and stay with my grandmother or here in Cinci (I go to school in Montreal) and stay with my parents. In Philadelphia, I could probably crash at my college roommate's place and just give her some money towards utilities/food.
