I'm doing a Sub-I next month but also have 2 residency interviews which will require me to miss a couple of days (travel, etc). How are people handling this issue with their attendings? I assume that even the most jaded attending will remember that he or she had to do this (and also had a limited amount of control over the times) but that assumption could be wrong. What have your experiences been?

I can't remember the exact rules, but our school has a specific policy (I can't remember if you are allowed to take approx. 1 day per week, or perhaps one weekend per rotation?). Therefore, I believe the attendings are pretty understanding about it.

Attendings will understand that you will be having residency interviews. It shouldn't be an issue.

My school gave us 10 days off that we could use for interviews.

Ok so I'm a lowly 3rd year but I do know that the order within which I put my rotations for my 4th year would help me look more "attractive" towards the residency programs I'd intend to apply for.

So for those 4th years going through the process now, interns and residents who have long passed this hurdle... how did you do it??

say for eg you're interested in FM... did you try to schedule these rotations and the elective months in FM in the first half of your 4th year? and as such were you able to get all of the recommendation letters you needed in on time?

pls help... advice welcomed... thanks in advance

I front loaded my fourth year with my sub-I's back to back in order to insure that I got my LORs in on time. As a result I had my file complete minus the Dean's Letter by the end of August. I turned in my complete file on Sept 1 and was rolling in interviews by the middle of September. Definitely worked for me.
