Im trying to set up my 4th year elective rotations at a few of the general surgery programs I plan on applying to. From what i've read/heard from others, I should try to rotate on the service that the chairman or program director is on.....but of course I've ran into a dilemma...they all seem to be gen surg! I can only do 2 rotations within the same area (school policy)so how should I go about choosing a subspecialty to rotate through and still be able to best show my interests in the program?

How many away rotations are you trying to do?

If you are trying to pull the wool over on your school, the following subspecialties are still within the "family" of general surgery and would be good choices - vascular, peds surg, and CT

I left out plastics b/c it seems like if you have the word "plastics" anywhere on your application then programs will assume you are applying for integrated plastics and only using gen surg as a back-up...
I concur.
