I have been wait listed at:
Yale
SUNY upstate
IcahnSOM
SUNY downstate
Albany
NYCOM (DO)

and accepted at TouroCOM Harlem.

I really do not want to reapply and would not have any extra experiences to add to my app. Also, if I do apply again I wouldn't apply DO, just MD, otherwise what would be the point in reapplying since I have a DO acceptance already, right?

Ive been weighing my options and really have decided against reapplying, I want to get on with my life already. Tell me your thoughts!

Little about me: I did Biochem in undergrad at a public university in NYC. Took a year off to work in the ER/apply to schools. AMCAS sGPA 3.61...AACOMAS sGPA 3.85....MCAT 30 (10,10,10)

But I am curious to what YOU would do. If you were in my situation, what would you be thinking/concerned about/glad about. I've asked many people and think I'd get more relevant answers on here.

It's definitely a risk reapplying with a 3.6/30 - statistically, you're looking at about a 50% chance of acceptance, maybe even less as a reapplicant with no significant updates. You also lose DO as a fallback option.

Do you want to give up an acceptance on a <50% chance of ever being able to be a doctor?

Wow bro, that's harsh! Especially after being interviewed by Yale. But, hang in there my man. If I were in your shoes, I'd take the DO acceptance and run with it, especially if your numbers are going unchanged.

This alone should make it clear that reapplying is out of the question. I hope you get off one of the waitlists, if not I'm sure you'll do great at TouroCOM.

Ooh, that really sucks :/ ive been thinking about this for a while and decided if it came down to DO vs reapplication I'd have to go DO.

Did u have shoddy ec's, research, clinical experience, lors etc?

Yea it's that risk that I really do not want to take. I'm grateful for my interviews, but even more grateful for the acceptance!

Yea it's been quite a roller coaster ride emotionally for me lol.

Thanks! I'm wishing for the best and preparing for the worst!

I had 1.5 years research and great EC and extensive clinical experience. That and my strong PS (per the professors that read it) is probably what got me those interviews

That's quite the range of schools you interviewed at. Tough call - but unless you are gunning for academia or a super competitive specialty, I think you should take the acceptance and run.

So, if your sGPA is 3.6, is your cGPA higher? If so...I might take the gamble. But still, it's a year lost, and if you don't have something super cool/extraordinary planned, I'd just get on with it.

I agree. It's sad, considering you got waitlisted at Yale and Icahn, but honestly, at this stage, it's unlikely you'll get out of the waitlist unfortunately. I would keep those waitlists until around mid-July, but otherwise, stick with the DO school and move on. It's simply not worth the time and effort to reapply and remain in the dark.

I would just take the DO acceptance. What tier are you on at Yale. It's pretty much over this year since their class is full and they barely had to use their WL this year.

Yep basically my thoughts too. That's the right word...sad. To know my stats made it and I had a shot, but such is life. Onwards and upwards?

I'm tier 2. They said they tapped into it but I guess not much or I was near the bottom

Ya, I personally have 2 friends that go in off the tier 2 WL, so your chances are somewhat slim by this point.

Yea I agree. I got their email saying their class is full and they don't expect much movement.

I don't suggest reapplying in this case. You're better off getting right into medical school. As far as I know, there aren't a ton of opportunities that are open only to MDs, so DO will be a good route.

It could really be anything, particularly at schools like Yale and Icahn who only accept 25-33% of the people they interview.

Only applied to NYC MD schools, Harvard, Yale, and Hopkins.

$50 says if they had applied to other states they would have gotten in.

OP, after seeing the DO school would you be willing to attend there?

I mean no offense by this question, but how did you get an interview at Yale?

You have an offer to med school. A very solid and respected one that places students into very strong residency's every year. Your focus should be on absolutely doing everything in your power to kick ass at the program you got accepted to. Do that and you can have a very legitimate chance at succeeding at the large majority of fields you aspire to.

I applied to NYS schools as well and 2 DO NY schools. Maybe I would have maybe not lol if there's anything to be learned from my cycle is MAYBE is the keyword lol.

In my eyes, the DO school I go to does not really matter so I'm glad the only one that accepted me is the only one that is convenient for me location and money wise. It also helps that all the facilities are new and the class is very diverse. The match list this year is also pretty good, I hear for a new school that really has no history. Also I'd only be paying for tuition and fees (through loans) vs for accommodation if I had to move to LI for NYCOM or God forbid travel from Brooklyn where I live to NYCOM by train and bus for 2 hours and a half every morning, then back again.

You know, I go to bed at night wondering the same thing...

No but seriously, I think it's because of my PS and really extensive experiences. I had LOTS of really, really different, quirky exposure to medicine/clinical experience/global experience and some solid LORs. I submitted my secondary in October, got an invite ONE DAY later...some strange forces maybe.

Or...maybe someone fell asleep at the computer and hit enter and boom...interview invite!

Haha, good to know that extracurriculars do indeed count for something!

As for your thread, take the acceptance and don't look back. Unless you're absolutely gunning for ENT or something crazy, DO won't make that much of a difference.

Lol at least that's what I think got me an interview, I could be totally wrong. And yea that's what in planning to do. I'm not invested or deeply interested in any specialty yet (maybe psych or rads) but that's only from my really basic knowledge as an almost-first-year, so it might change
