A Big Review of California IM Programs

Can anyone give updated info on UCSF Fresno, Scripps Mercy and UCLA Olive View, Kaiser LA in terms of fellowship match. What is the outlook of doing research with affiliated universities at these programs? If you need to know specific fellowship interests: Cardiology, heme/onc, rheumatology.

I don't have info on UCSF-Fresno or Scripps Mercy, but these are for UCLA-Olive View and Kaiser LA:

I wasn't able to find fellowship match results from UCSF-Fresno's website. Wish they were be more transparent about this stuff. It seems like they do fine matching their residents into fellowships, with most of them staying at UCSF-Fresno.

You interviewed at UCSF fresno right? Did they mention anything in particular that might give an idea of their fellowship match rate. Did they have plenty of opportunities to do research?

I don't remember what their match rate was, but they did say that anyone who applied got their fellowship choice, save for one or two who didn't match because they only applied to CA programs as they prioritized staying in CA over matching into a fellowship. I'm sure they have research opportunities available as they ARE affiliated with UCSF, but I can't go into more specifics than that.

Did you interview at UCSF-Fresno? Why don't you email the program coordinator about their fellowship match rate/results and their research opportunities?

Probably a good idea. I am currently a 3rd year in the process of figuring out where I may want to do aways.

The number of residents going into fellowship UCSF-Fresno has varied over the last few years, but a big part of it is self-selection. With a typical class size of 18 (though that has gone up the last 2 years, none of the larger classes have graduated yet), the # of people going into fellowship has ranged from a low of 3 (maybe 3 years ago) to 9 (maybe 2 years before that). Most people matched, though I can think of a handful that didn't - most of those applied to things like Cards or GI without going all that broadly.

There's recent alumni who did Rheum fellowship in southern CA, Heme/Onc fellowship in southern CA, Endocrine fellowship in the midwest, GI fellowship in NY, and that's just what is immediately coming to mind. I think every field but Allergy has had at least one graduate go into it in the last 5 years. And of course, tons of graduates have stayed local - in the last ~15 years they've opened Cards, GI, Heme/Onc, ID, Pulm, Sleep, Palliative, and I've heard rumors that Endocrine is coming next year or the year after with Rheum next in line after that. I somehow doubt they'll open a Nephro fellowship anytime soon (there's just no applicants, programs should be closing in that field, not opening) but that's every other core specialty represented once Endo/Rheum are open.
