A couple of questions about medical residencies

I don't how it all works. Do you compete for certain residency spots against others from your medical school only? Or do you compete against everyone that is applying for residency that year? Does every school have certain residencies locked up?

Go to nrmp.org. They will have all answers you are asking about.

But in short, you can apply anywhere. Anyone else can apply anywhere. No spots are locked in unless they are given out as "pre-match" spots for IMGs (or DOs for ACGME spots) as these folks are not bound specifically to the match process for those particular positions.

You are, however, getting quite ahead of yourself. By the time you may be ready for residency it may change, particularly as US graduate numbers increase and residency positions stay the same.
