Hi,

I'm an incoming DO student considering a future (yes, WAY in the future) residency in radiology and fellowship in interventional radiology, stemming from both my own scientific interest and strong undergraduate background.

Questions:

1. How feasible is it for a DO to get a radiology fellowship, both in general and specifically in interventional or cardiothoracic?
2. I think I have to go to an academic (i.e. university) allopathic residency in order to get the fellowship (someone please correct me if I'm wrong)...how can I determine which of these university allopathic residencies are more DO-friendly?

Thanks in advance for any responses.

It is entirely possible. Once you are IN a radiology residency, your choices of fellowships are not so much influenced by the type of medical school you went to but rather by your standing within the program and your ability to get good letters of recommendation and phone-calls.

At this point in time, graduates from all residency programs have good options for fellowships, it is certainly not limited to academic programs. A fair share of graduating residents don't do fellowships and go directly into the job market. In the past, when the job market wasn't so hot, fellowships where highly competitive.

Don't get too fixated on university programs. You want to do a residency that gives you the tools to be a good radiologist, some of the community programs beat a fair share of the academic programs in that objective.

With a bioengineering degree you have a bit of a leg up in your quest for a radiology residency. Best of luck.

Btw. If I read this correctly, you won't enter the radiology job market until 2015. Nobody can tell you right now how things will look 10 years from now (I can tell you how things in rads looked 10 years ago: bleak)
